Discover The Scenic Highway Project Dominican Republic

The Scenic Highway Project, or La Ruta Panoramica in Spanish, is a 28-mile panoramic road that crosses the Septentrional Range linking Puerto Plata on the north coast, and Santiago, the country's second largest city. The highway's highest point is La Cumbre, where some of the most valuable amber in the world is extracted from shallow mines. Winding through villages, across rivers and over spectecular ridges, La Ruta Panoramica offers an ideal opportunity to connect with country life in the Dominican Republic. The Septentrional Range is a region of non-industrial, subsistence farming; at roadside stands, farmers sell their surplus produce, all of it natrually or oranically cultivated. A great place to make a pit-stop for a night or two is the Tubagua Eco-Lodge (see our review).

Driving along this route is one of the best ways of exploring the natural assets of the country that is all-too-often mistaken for a land of resorts.
