American Airlines came into existence in 1926, offering flights between Chicago and St Louis. Officially founded in 1930, American Airways welcomed aboard its billionth passenger in 1991. Nowadays the airline is based in several airports across the USA (JFK, Los Angeles and Miami). It is the third biggest airline in the world, serves more than 250 cities in 40 countries all around the world and operates around nearly 6400 American Airlines flights per day. This airline is part of the One World alliance which it founded and which is the third biggest alliance consisting of 15 members including British Airways and Finnair.

The American Airways baggage allowance permits all passengers to bring one item of carry-on luggage which must not exceed 114cm in size as well as a handbag, briefcase or portable computer. There is no extra charge for hold luggage and weight limitations vary depending on the flight destination and ticket booking class (from one bag weighing 23kg to three bags weighing 23kg). American Airlines overweight baggage will cost passengers 100 dollars for every extra 9kg and bags are not permitted to surpass 32kg.Passengers travelling without hold luggage may use the American Airlines online check in service which can be completed between 24 hours to 90 minutes before take-off (or 45 minutes before domestic flights within the USA). There are also self-service check in kiosks in some airports.
