Another good vantage point is from a boat while cruising across the lake, which also affords great views of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe.

4 Cathédrale Saint-Pierre

Sitting on the highest point of the Old Town, the Cathédrale Saint-Pierre is one of the city's most striking landmarks. It was built in the 12th century and took the best part of a hundred years to complete. Today, visitors who are prepared to climb the 157 steps of the north tower are rewarded with a panoramic view over the city and the lake beyond. Below ground is one of the most significant archaeological sites in western Europe.

5 The Palais des Nations

The Palais des Nations is the European Headquarters of the United Nations, and as such is a symbol of international diplomacy. The building welcomes more than 25,000 delegates per year and can be visited every day of the year.
