London Gabes

Tunisia is served internationally by Carthage airport. A flight to Carthage will usually involve a single stopover, and will take anything between 5 hours and 20 minutes and just under 27 hours depending on the length of your stop. Rome, Paris, and Milan are all popular places for a stopover on these London to Carthage flights. Regular flights leave London for Carthage each week, with Thompson and FlyBe numbering among the major carriers. Most flights leave from Heathrow, which can be reached easily from throughout the UK via motorway. Piccadilly line trains also run every few minutes between Heathrow and central London (this journey takes around an hour). On arriving at Carthage, a short internal flight with TunisAir will take you to your final destination at Gabes. From Gabes airport, a short taxi ride will take you right into the centre of town.

Sightseeing Gabes 1 The souq.

This lively and friendly market in Grand Jara is an excellent place to pick up some authentic goods. Gabes is especially renowned for its spices, and you can fill your bags from the colourful pyramids of scented spices on offer here any day of the week. Henna baskets are another great souvenir to take away from the souq, and there are a number of other little trinkets available too. Be prepared to share a laugh as you haggle with traders.

2 The palmerai.

This glorious little tropical jungle is a wonderful place to view the gorgeous native flora of this region of Tunisia. In flamingo season, knock kneed flamingos can also be seen picking their way through the trees and plants, too. There is an on site cafe with some tasty snacks in, and a few taxidermy exhibits showing interesting animals of the region.

3 The beach.

Often fairly deserted, the clean and sunny beach is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. Swim in the Mediterranean Sea and enjoy a refreshing drink on the pure white sand.

4 Flamingo Island.

Take one of the regular trips that are offered from the historic port to Flamingo Island. Look out for the eponymous flamingos as you enjoy a picnic lunch and perhaps a dip in the warm sea. The trips are taken on a restored sailing ship: a little piece of history in its own right.

5 Caves in Matmata.

An increasingly popular eco tourism site, Matmata is home to some ancient desert cave dwellings. The awe inspiring desert landscape may also be recognisable as the shooting location for the Star Wars series.
