'Sant Iago', known in English often as 'Saint James' is the patron saint of Spain. Santiago De Compostela is named after this saint, and the majestic cathedral in the centre of town is one of the city's key landmarks. This is a fantastic location for a souvenir photograph or two. Walk over here via the ancient Plaza de Cervantes, which constitutes a beautiful historic route to the cathedral.

The city has been a favourite site of pilgrims from all over the world for many centuries. Housed in an old medieval building, the Museum of Pilgrimages, or 'Museo das Peregrinaciones' displays artifacts relating to pilgrimages from the earliest times right up to the present day. This is an intriguing and unique museum.

A visit to this old palace is a must for lovers of culture and Spanish history. Featuring some stunning carvings in stone in the Romanesque style, the Gelmirez Palace is one of the architectural highlights of the city. The walk over here is a pleasant one, and makes for a great afternoon's trip.
