Etihad Airways : History

Etihad Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates. Created just 12 years ago (2003), Etihad is already one of the best airline companies in the world. It is also considered the best airline company in the Middle East. Located half way between Asia and Europe its international hub in Abu Dhabi allows the airline international access. It operates flights in 5 continents. Since 2011, Etihad Airways has developed a considerable number or strategic partners. It has invested capital in numerous companies, in particular Air Berlin, Air Serbia and even Virgin Australia.

The Abu Dhabi airline is particularly known for its highly visible sponsorship. The stadium of Manchester City (England) and Melbourne (Australia) are both called the Etihad Stadium.

In December 2014, Etihad Airways had a total fleet of 89 aircrafts.

Etihad Airways : Information about the airline

On board an Etihad Airways flight, economy and business class passengers can take one piece of hand luggage (with maximum dimensions of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm). For hold luggage the allowances vary depending on the destination. For Economy class, on average two pieces of luggage are allowed. From/to Brazil, each piece of baggage can weigh up to 32kgs. From/to the United States or Canada, the weight is reduced to 23kgs for each hold bag. For all other destinations, the number of bags is not specified however the maximum combined weight cannot exceed 30kgs. For Business and First class, 3 pieces of luggage each of 32 kgs are allowed to/from Brazil. For the United States and Canada, the number of permitted bags is two. For other destinations, bags cannot exceed 40 or 50 kgs. Any bags that exceed either the weight limit or permitted dimensions will be taken care of by Etihad Cargo, which will incur a penalty charge. Passengers should expect to pay additional fees if they are travelling with animals or oversized items.

Booking online is recommended. In case of loss or theft, your e-ticket can be reissued more easily. All passengers must carry their ticket on board with them during their journey. It is possible to change your booking, in particular to adjust the dates, to choose one’s seat or even to order special meals.

For those travelling only with hand luggage, it is possible to check-in online through the Etihad Airways website, in order to avoid the check-in queues at the airport. This service is available from 24 hours before and up until 2 hours before the flight. Online check-in is possible for travellers with hold luggage, however they must still check-in their bags at the airport check-in desk.

Customer and on Board Services Etihad Airways

During the flight
For all tickets prices, passengers on board Etihad flights will have personal touch screens with direct access to a selection of films, series, documentaries and games. For two consecutive years (2010 and 2011), Etihad Airways’ First class was elected the best in the world by the company Skytrax. For Business class and Economy class, the services are reasonably similar to the international standards but there are different advantages on the ground in regards to the tickets (baggage handling, preferential check-in, fast access areas, etc).

After the flight
Customers can subscribe to the “Etihad Guest” loyalty programme. This free subscription allows an accumulation of miles. These can then be reused for subsequent bookings with the airline. Etihad offers a “mixed” payment: allowing travellers to pay for a ticket partly using their miles and then the remaining amount with money. These miles can also be used at other non-airline partners (car rental, leisure activities, etc). It should be noted that the airline offers 3 levels of cards: Etihad Guest, Etihad Guest Silver and Etihad Guest Gold.
