Choose a cheap flight to Fez to whisk you to one of Morocco's best kept secrets where you'll find Fes-el-Bali, the best preserved old walled city in the Arab world, often compared to Jerusalem's for magnificence and stature. You can find red taxis outside the old city walls which will take you to the nearest gate or 'bab', such as Bab Boujeloud which is the top and main medina gate. From there getting around the car free medina is easy, and there are several walking routes to choose from, with direction markers on the walls to prevent you from becoming lost. Guides are available for those who don't want to wander the narrow, built up streets alone, but be sure to ask your hotel to find you a licensed guide. There are several sights to be had within the medina such as the leather dying pits and the Kairouine Mosque, an essential for visitors. Most flights the UK take just a few hours so you could be enjoying wonderful views over the medina from the Merenid Tombs by tomorrow. Unfortunately only muslims can enter the Moulay Idriss II shrine, but for the views and the fabulous decoration of the exterior, it's still wll worth a visit.
Getting into Fez from the airport is relatively easy with a designated shuttle bus service approximately every 30 minutes. The fleet of Volvo buses is clearly marked Fez-Airport and are a replacement for the Number 16 city bus service which previously covered this route. The fare is around 2 euros and is payable on the bus. If you're planning on using the bus for your return flight, the bus stop is next to the train station in Fez and you can purchase an advance ticket for the journey from the cash desk. Taxis are also available and are competitively priced at about 12 euros.
