Austria's second-largest city, Graz is renowned for its six universities, and vibrant atmosphere combined with an enchanting old world atmosphere. The city is teeming with spectacular attractions, from breathtaking Baroque places to cutting edge modern architecture. In fact, Graz's old town, which includes the Burg castle complex, was added to the UNESCO list of World Cultural Heritage Sites in 1999. The city is well connected to a variety of destinations in central Europe, but unfortunately there are currently no direct flights from London to Graz. However, a good option for those who do not want a stopover, may be to search for a cheap flight to Vienna which is a just a short train journey away from Graz.
Graz is truly a city where classical beauty meets the modern world, and this is especially evident in the city's Hauptplatz (Main Square). Built in the Middle Ages as a market square, the Hauptplatz is now home to a wide selection of upmarket boutiques and shops. The beautiful town hall stands in this square, and there are numerous wonderful restaurants to sample the local cuisine. One of the city's most enduring attractions is the glockenspiel that rings three times a day (11 AM, 3 PM, 6 PM). Tourists can gather in the aptly named Glockenspielplatz to hear the famous bells that have chimed every day since Christmas Eve 1905 (apart from a period following the Second World War). The city's cathedral has undergone numerous restorations since the building was originally constructed in 1438, and contains some impressive frescos dating back to the era of Emperor Frederick III.
Following your flight to the city there are several possibilities for travel to the city itself and the surrounding region. Firstly, there is reliable bus service that runs directly from the airport to Jakominiplatz in the centre of the city. The bus lines 630 and 631 depart from the airport from 05:20 to 23:45, and the journey to the city centre takes about 20 minutes. A taxi from the airport to your destination in the city will cost approximately £20- £25, depending on the exact location of your accommodation. If you would prefer to take a train, once your flight has landed, the S5 line will transport you to the city's main station (Hauptbahnhof) in about 15 minutes.
