Japan Airlines International is the flagship carrier of Japan. Recognising the need to get back on their feet after the Second World War, the Japanese government founded Japanese Airlines in 1951. The company provides both international and domestic flights. It is part of the Japan Airlines Corporation group as well as the One World alliance since 2006. The latter is the third biggest airline alliance, consisting of 15 companies. Japan Airlines offers flights to over 100 destinations worldwide: to Asia, North America, Europe and Oceania. In 2010, the airline company approached American Airlines in order to put in place several agreements with the American authorities, with the aim of offering better flights to its clients.
In March 2014, the company counted a fleet of 222 aircrafts of which the majority was Boeings.
On board a Japan Airlines flight, travellers in Economy and Business class can bring one item of hand baggage (maximum dimensions of (56cm 45cm x25cm). For hold luggage, the restrictions are universal with the weight limit set at two 23kgs items. For First class, three items each weighing 32kgs are allowed. After that, you must pay for any extra baggage. One should expect to pay additional fees if you are travelling with animals or oversized luggage. The price is calculated according to your route.
Booking online is recommended. This service is sometimes still available up to 6 hours before the flight. In case of loss or theft, your e-ticket can be reissued more easily. You should carry your ticket on you at all times during the flight.
It is necessary to be at the airport an hour before take-off. After that, preselected seats may be released.
If you are travelling with just hand luggage, it is possible to check-in online using the Japan Airlines website, in order to avoid the queues at the check-in desks. Online check-in is also possible if you are travelling with luggage for the hold, but you must still go to the desk to drop your bags.
During the flight
In all classes, passengers will have their own touch screen with access to a selection of films, series, documentaries and games. Premium Economy class travellers will benefit from additional food and entertainment services. For Business and First Class, the services are reasonably similar to the international standards but with different advantages on the ground regarding tickets (dealing with baggage, preferential check in, access to a VIP lounge, sports clubs and fast access zones, etc?).
