La Paz is the administrative capital of Bolivia, in the west of the country. Having been founded in the 16th century by Spanish conquistadores, it is one of the most interesting, historically appealing and culturally rich capitals in South America. At over 3,000m above sea level, it is the highest capital in the world. Sagarnaga Street is a place of great interest for most tourists: a bustling market street where you will find any kind of souvenir or local artisan product. Close to it is the Witches' Market, where many superstitious items can be found, alongside charangos (Bolivia's most famous musical instruments). Plaza Murillo is La Paz's most important square, as the Metropolitan Cathedral and various government buildings, such as the Government Palace, face it. If you're interested in Spanish colonial architecture, you can walk down Calle Jaen, as it is one of the few roads which still preserves many Spanish buildings, dating from before the country's independence in 1809. The city's airport, standing at a staggering 13,325ft above sea level, has flights connecting the city to various domestic and international destinations, such as Miami, Lima, Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Santiago, Cochabamba and Trinidad.
