Meridiana : History

Meridiana is a lowcost airline along with SkyEurope, Ryanair, EasyJet, and Vueling. Originally named Alisarda, the airline was founded on 29th March 1963 and funded by prince Karim Aga Khan, with the principal aim of increasing tourism to la Costa Smeralda (the emerald coast) in Sardinia. In 2010 Alisarda joined Eurofly and changed its name to Meridiana. The Meridiana headquarters are based at the Olbia Airport in the north of Sardinia. Meridiana flights jet passengers to around 60 airports in several continents, and the Meridiana route map mainly connects destinations in Europe (especially within Italy) but also New York, Russia, the Middle East (Israel), Africa (Egypt and Madagascar) and Brazil.

Passengers flying with Meridiana airlines may bring one item of carry on luggage no larger than 55x40x20cm in dimension and no heavier than 8kg. In addition the Meridiana baggage allowance permits its customers a second handbag, briefcase or portable computer. The number and weight of hold luggage items depend on the Meridiana booking class (one 23kg bag for Meridiana Economy Class ticket holder and two 23kg bags for Business and First Class passengers).

There is no Meridiana online check in service available; passengers must complete the Meridiana check in at the airport desk. Check in hours vary depending on the flight length and are available for verification via the Meridiana official website.

The Meridiana inflight entertainment system offers a diverse programme for long-haul flights. Economy Class passengers are each given an individual screen charged with a selection of films, music and radio channels. In Meridiana Business Class travellers receive an individual iPad and can choose their meals and wine selection from the menu. There is a further option offered by Meridiana called "Business Class Electa" which ensures that the adjacent seat is empty.
