The second largest city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam is one of the largest ports in the world, and often referred to as the "Gateway to Europe". Rotterdam is also known as an architectural city, blending the old with newer more sophisticated structures. There are numerous attractions for visitors, including museums, excellent restaurants, and great shopping. The Dutch based low-cost carrier Transavia operates the largest number of flights to the city and are perhaps your best option for getting a cheap flight to the city. To ensure you get a cheap flight to the Netherlands you should consider using Amsterdam Schiphol Airport as well, which is connected to Rotterdam by a frequent high-speed rail service that takes just 26 minutes. The city is a major international commercial centre, and was the world's busiest port until it was recently overtaken by Shanghai. The city centre boasts several examples of impressive modern architecture, which has led to Rotterdam being dubbed the architectural capital of the Netherlands. Between the city's many skyscrapers lie some of the best museums in the Netherlands, including the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen and Kunsthal, which are both located in the city's Museumpark. The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen has a wonderful collection of art dating from the Middle Ages to the 21st century, including works by world famous artists such as Bosch, Rembrandt, and Van Gogh. The Kunsthal on the other hand focuses on just modern art, and often exhibits art with experimental themes alongside more established modern pieces.
Once your flight has arrived at the Airport public transport is easily nagivated in order to get to the heart of the city. The RandstadRail (metroline E) is an efficient and reliable service that connects the airport to both Hague Central Station and the city's Central Station. Another good option for transport is the public bus service (line number 33), which runs frequently to Central Station. The bus stop for this can be found outside the main terminal building, and the journey to the city will take about 25 minutes. There are also taxis available directly outside the terminal, and a selection of reputable car rental companies operating inside the terminal building.
