The capital of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Stuttgart is a city that is most famous for its standing in the automotive industry; both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz have their company headquarters in the region. With its friendly and welcoming locals and a relaxed atmosphere, Stuttgart is a large city with the ambience of a small town. As one might expect the German carriers Air Berlin, Germanwings and Lufthansa operate the largest number of flights to Stuttgart. Make certain to compare the prices of these major airlines to get a cheap flight to the city. British Airways operates regular flights from London Heathrow to the city, while the low cost carrier Germanwings provides routes from both London Heathrow and London Stansted. As a specialised low-cost carrier Germanwings or Flybe may be your best option for obtaining cheap flights and they have flights departing from Birmingham. The Mercedes-Benz Museum, which is located just outside of the city, was re-opened in May 2006 in a completely redesigned building, which is an architectural attraction in its own right. The Mercedes-Benz Museum houses an impressive exhibition that commemorates over 125 years of auto history. The Green "U" (Das Grüne "U") is a vast series of parks that runs from the central city to Killesberg Park. A stroll through these connected parks will take you between 2 and 3 hours (depending on your pace), and will allow you to explore the city from a new perspective. The city's Staatsgalerie is a real treat for lovers of art, being home to works by such artists as Picasso and Rembrandt. The gallery is actually made up of two separate exhibitions in two different buildings. One concentrates on art dating from 1500 to 1900 (Alte Staatsgalerie), while the other has an exceptional modern art exhibition (Neue Staatsgalerie).
Once your flight to the city has landed, the centre can be easily reached from the airport's train station. Using the region's suburban rail lines S2 or S3, you can reach the city centre within 30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased at special vending machines at the lowest level of the airport before you enter the station. If you would prefer to take a taxi following your flight there is a large taxi rank outside the main arrivals area of the airport. There are also several bus routes that provide direct routes from the airport to various locations in the city, the surrounding region, and beyond.
