Trapani is a city located on the Mediterranean coast in the northwest of Sicily, Italy's largest island in the south of the country. Its history dates back over 2,000 years and this is reflected in its beautiful cultural heritage. Most of the historical centre dates from the medieval period onwards, with some truly exquisite gems to see, such as the Basilica of the Madonna di Trapani, the Triton Fountain, the Baroque Giudecca Palace and the city's Cathedral, which contains an Annunciation allegedly by van Dyck. Not far from the city are the Aegadian Islands, an archipelago which can be reached easily from Trapani; Favignana, in particular, but also Levanzo and Marettimo, have some beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Other beaches close by, where you can relax and sunbathe, are those of Scopello and Marausa. Trapani Airport operates flights which connect the city to Italian and European destinations, such as Rome, Turin, Brussels, Pisa, Paris and London. When searching for flights from London, you can find the cheap flight you're looking for with our online comparison tool, with which you can compare and buy the option you prefer.
The city centre has good connections with the airport: taxis and bus shuttles are available for passengers. The journey into the city takes about 30 to 40 minutes depending on your chosen mode of transport. When you arrive, you can buy a Trapani Welcome Card, which offers tourists a variety of benefits, including a free return ride on the Trapani-Erice cable-car, unlimited use of the city's bus network and discounts on many establishments, including city tours, mini cruises, some museums, and cafés. Not far from the city are the Greek ruins of Segesta, dating back to the 5th century BC, with its temple and theatre: the site is currently under approval to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want to discover more of Sicily, visit the island's other cities, such as Catania, Palermo, Agrigento and Siracusa. Monreale and the Valley of the Temples are particularly beautiful tourist destinations.
