Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand, located in the North Island, and is the second largest in the country. The 2011 Lonely Planet Best in Travel voted the city as the fourth in its top 10 Cities to Visit in the world. Wellington has some of the most spectacular natural panoramas in the country, and is an incredibly vibrant cultural, artistic and culinary city. Since the city is in a natural habour, it has the sea (and ocean) on one side, where one can often spot dolphins, and mountain formations just outside the city borders. Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand, is located in the city and houses a wide variety of collections and specimen, including the world's largest colossal squid, over 4 meters long. The airport connects the city with most New Zealand cities and various cities in Australia, including Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne: from these cities (and Auckland) you can go on to other intercontinental routes. Wellington International Airport is well-connected with the city centre, as a bus or a taxi will take only about 30 minutes to get into the city. Once you have arrived, you can purchase a Wellington City Pass, which, on top of a return trip on the city's famous cable cars, will also give you entrance two popular tourist attractions of your choice (from a selection). The city council also suggests various itineraries, depending on your tastes (arts and culture, food and wine, heritage, etc.).As mentioned above, the city is very lively, as it hosts many festivals throughout the year (i.e. New Zealand International Arts Festival and Wellington Folk Festival), and has a large number of theatres, music, arts and entertainment venues. In addition to this, New Zealand is fast becoming a country of winemakers: visit the wine region of Wairarapa for a day.If you wish to see more of New Zealand, you can take a scenic rail trip to Palmerston, Hamilton and Auckland (going through the National Park), or take a cheap flight to Christchurch and Queenstown.
