The capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb is a city with a rich history dating back to Roman times. A vibrant 21st century city, Zagreb is rapidly increasing in popularity with tourists who are attracted by its unique blend of medieval towers, 19th century palaces, and lively open-air markets. Ideally located at the crossroads of Europe, connecting Central Europe to the Adriatic Sea, the city is a perfect destination for all the family. In fact, the city was visited by over 700,000 tourists in 2011, mainly from Austria, Germany and Italy. The city is well connected to a variety of destinations in Europe, the Middle East and Asia (a seasonal flight from Seoul, South Korea). As you might expect Croatia Airlines provides the largest number of flights to the city, and are perhaps your best option for getting cheap flights to the city. Tourists should also be aware that the nearby airports in Ljubljana, Graz, and Klagenfurt are serviced predominantly by low-fare airlines and provide an alternative for getting cheap flights from London to the region. The city is renowned for its atmospheric "old town" that rivals the beauty of most other European capitals. The Upper Town (Gornji grad) is the medieval core of the city, and has a wealth of stunning architecture, great restaurants and bars, and some of the best tourist attractions. The city also has a number of celebrated museums including the Arheoloki Muzej (Archaeological Museum) and Muzej Mimara (Mimara Museum). The Archaeological Museum has an outstanding Egyptian collection featuring three Egyptian mummies from the Ptolomeian era, while the Mimara Museum houses some 3,700 works of art, including prominent works by the Dutch, Spanish, and French masters.
Once your flight has landed, there are some reliable public transport services that will bring you to the heart of the city. There is a bus link between the airport and the main bus station, a single ticket will cost you about EUR4.20. The bus' first departure from the airport is at 7AM, and then every thirty minutes from 8AM to 8PM. If you miss the final bus at 8PM, you need not worry because a bus will be provided every time a Croatia Airlines flight arrives. There are also a number of private airport transfer companies and car rental services operating at the airport.
