Discover Abbaye de Lagrasse France

Founded in the 8th century, the Abbey of Lagrasse, after a first restoration in the Carolingian era, experienced a long period of prosperity, thanks to the many donations and privileges it received.
Caught up, like many of its counterparts, in the torment of the crusade against the Cathars, the Abbey of Lagrasse, or rather the Abbot of Lagrasse, acted as an intermediary between the two parties, and it was he that obtained Carcassonne's submission to the King.
However, his role as a mediator did not prevent the decline of the religious structure, a fate suffered by almost of the region's abbeys during this period following the Albigensian Crusade and precipitated by the commendam of 1502.
Despite a brief moment in the 17th century when the abbey seemed to experience a period of revival, it was divided and sold in two lots during the French Revolution and its monks driven out.
Particularly well preserved, you can still see today the structures, constructions and reorganisation of the Abbey of Lagrasse from the different eras.
The small cloister, with its columns topped with Romanesque capitals, one of which is decorated with a representation of lust, can be seen in the Palais Vieux (Old Palace), the oldest part of the building.
Above this you will find the abbey chapel, which, as it is seen today, dates from the 13th century but which was built on the foundations of a pre-Roman church. Its interior consists of walls covered in frescoes, glazed tiled flooring with complementary patterns, and adjoining large vaulted rooms which used to be the cellars and caves. Above these is the monks dormitory dating from the 13th century.
The abbey church, with its barrel-vaulted nave, dates from the same era. Its flat chevet choir is also barrel vaulted and opens out onto a transept, a testament to the medieval era (11th century), and a new Abbots Palace that was built in the 18th century.
A vertical feature at the heart of the longitudinal buildings, the bell tower built in 1537 stands proudly at 40m high, offering an unobstructed view to all those brave enough to climb the 150 steps of its spiral staircase.
