Discover Le Musée de la Grande Chartreuse France

Situated in La Correrie (a group of monastic buildings), in the commune of Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse, the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse enables visitors to learn more about the lives of the monks of the Carthusian Order. At the heart of the Chartreuse Mountains, just over a mile from the famous monastery founded by St Bruno in 1084, this unique site enables visitors to gain a better understanding of the mystery of the Carthusian Order, their 900-year history, their way of life and their vocation to solitude. You will notably learn how the monks mastered the skill of creating miniature illustrations for manuscripts, as well as the famous Chartreuse liqueur that is actually made in the cellars in Voiron, just under 20 mi away. The 'Correrie', the monastery's lower house and the building in which the monks once lived, was turned into a museum in 1957. Mostly dating back to the Renaissance period, the architecture of this former outbuilding owned by the Carthusian monks is similar to that of the monastery itself. The latter, where the monks live now, is not open to the public but the Musée de La Correrie allows visitors to discover various documents, objects from the monks' everyday lives, engravings, models, testimonies, audio-visual maps and films, so you'll still feel as though you got to visit it! Over the winter holiday period, the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse organises workshops for children aged seven and up to have a go at making their own miniature illustrations. At the same time, the children also learn about the monk copyists of the Middle Ages. The Musée de la Grande Chartreuse is also the departure point for numerous hikes, which include the walk up to the monastery that is actually perched at an altitude of 1,084 metres, just over a mile from La Correrie. At the end of your visit you will be offered a 'Green Chaud' (a hot chocolate drink mixed with green Chartreuse liqueur). Of course, children will have to make do with a simple hot chocolate!
