'Love and know to give the desire to protect.'
The Naturoscope (Permanent Centre for Environmental Initiatives) was created on 20 January 1995 in Cassis to allow for the preservation of the cliffs and the cultural and ecological heritage of the Calanques, which receive large numbers of tourists.
Mainly aimed at groups, the centre proposes a number of activities notably based around two houses, one dedicated to the sea (located on Prophet Beach in Marseille) and the other in the forest (in the area of the Pastré countryside).
The role of these two sites is to create awareness on the environment among the public (of all ages) by providing knowledge on the eco-cultural heritage and by organising actions for the preservation and promotion of the milieu. In the 'House of the Sea', you can follow workshops that allow you to discover the sea floor thanks to an aquarium, educational material, games, slide shows, etc.
The 'House of the Forest', meanwhile, proposes a study on invertebrates, a reflection on the reforestation of burned forests, and the creation of a vegetable garden.
The many discovery visits provide the opportunity to admire the magnificent scenery of the Calanques. Above all, they make it possible to combine holidays with hikes, ecology and general culture, thanks to the discovery of the site's fauna, flora and biodiversity. These outings also provide the occasion to become aware of and reflect on the consequences of fires and other dangers linked to human actions and maybe even to actively participate in the preservation of this setting through a waste gathering day out in the nature.
Nature outings take place on Pomègues island, on the trails of Saint Pons and the hillsides of Sainte Baume.
