Historical dates

1965This former British colony becomes independent within the Commonwealth. Sir Dawda Jawara is Prime Minister.
1970: Becomes a Republic under the presidency of Jawara.
1994: A military coup d'etat puts into power the young Captain Yahya Jammeh.
1996: Victory of Yahya Jammeh at the presidential elections.
1997: It becomes a parliamentary regime following a new Constitution.
2001: New victory of Yahya Jammeh at the presidential elections. The national Assembly is largely dominated by the Patriotic Alliance for the re-orientation and construction (APRC) in power.

July 22: celebrating the day Jammeh came into power.

December 25: Christmas.
Gambia is a Muslim country. Therefore, some Holidays and celebrations depend on the lunar calendar, for instance the Korite celebration, which marks the end of the fast, Tabaski (sheep celebration) and the Gammo (celebrating the birth of the Prophet).
