Elounda

By Amy Adejokun Amy Adejokun Section editor

Our Editorial team's advice

Elounda is located 7 and a half miles north of Agios Nikolaos. It can be reached by car on a nice road along the Mirabello Bay. Its small port is surrounded by mountains, offering landscapes that are more pleasant than those of Heraklion. In the hinterland, it overlooks the Gulf of Mirabello and the panoramic view is remarkable.
Off the port, the island of Spinalonga runs from north to south. Until it was discovered that leprosy was not contagious in the 1950s, it was here where they used to isolate lepers. The Venetians built one of the most imposing fortresses on the island of Crete, the last fortress to resist the invading Turks. Elounda is a region also known for its luxury hotels.

To see

On the island - From the visit of the ruins of the palace of Knossos, to the Minoan ruins of Festos and the palace of Malia, lovers of history will not run out of places to visit. You can also visit the famous Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, which embraces the entirety of the Minoan civilization, or discover Fodele, the village where it is said that the painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos was born, better known by the name El Greco (1541-1614).

To do

Many hotels offer tours through their respective tourism offices. In addition to scuba diving, the hotels suggest discovering the island of Spinalonga or the hinterland, the nature and villages, a haven of peace and serenity. You can also visit the monastery of Moni Areti and the city of Plaka.

To try

Restaurants are in abundance here. Here you will find typical Cretan dishes such as gyros, Greek salad, slouvakia and moussaka.

To bring back

On the markets, you can find food, herbs, olive oil and Cretan cheese. In the shops, CDs of local music are sold. The raki is cherished as an institution, taste it and bring a bottle back for your friends.
