The capital city of Sicily may not be the most beautiful part of the island but it is the main port where the cruise ships stop. But do not be too disheartened as there is still a lot to see and it will give you a good taste of what the biggest island in the Mediterranean is all about. Make sure you check out the itinerary for your Palermo cruise holiday as it may be that you have little or no interest in the other ports of call of that particular cruise ship. Take a look if you can at the deck plan to see which cabin would suit you best and check that the activities on the ship are to your taste. Once that is all sorted there are many excursions to be had once on the shore. Be sure to visit the main cathedral as well as the several other major churches in the city. If you are brave enough, head down to the city's catacombs where over 8,000 ex-residents of Palermo are on display. Make sure you take a stroll along the via Vittorio Emanuele where a lot of the city's attractions are to be found and spend time watching the world go by on one of the many piazza. Fans of The Godfather have to see the Teatro Massimo which features in the trilogy's final scene while for a great view of the city head to the hill town of Monreale from where you can look down on Palermo. Want a taste of the island? Then try cannoli and arancini.
