Located in the developing area of the same name, the Al Raha beach, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts group, is a luxury hotel which stretches out along the seafront. There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

    Location 6.0 /10

The hotel is a 15-minute drive (9 mi) away from the centre of Abu Dhabi towards Dubai and 10 minutes (4 mi) from the capital's international airport. A free shuttle operates between the hotel and the centre of Abu Dhabi 5 times a day. The hotel itself is located in the new, modern area of Al Raha, an area devoted to entertainment and still undergoing a great deal of construction. The artificial island of Yassi, home to the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 circuit, can be seen opposite the hotel and a large stadium is soon to be built in the area, just one of many projects in the pipeline.
The golf course is just 15 minutes from the hotel, with discounted rates available to guests staying at the Al Raha.

    Accommodation 8.45 /10

Long, wide, colourful corridors lead up to the 134 immaculate rooms which include 65 standard rooms overlooking the sea and gardens with balconies (592 sq ft); 35 standard rooms on the town side and without balconies (700 sq ft), a number of suites and 24 villas. On the town side of the hotel, the less than admirable view overlooks the very busy main road, although the double-glazing does keep out the noise. The high-ceilinged rooms are decorated in warm colours and have carpeted floors. The dark brown furniture in the rooms provides lots of storage space and all the rooms have large televisions (broadcasting many different channels) which are gradually being replaced by plasma-screens. All rooms have quiet individual air-conditioning, a free safe, a DVD player, a mini-bar with tea and coffee-making facilities, a direct-dial telephone line, an Internet connection (free wireless), etc., whilst the spacious yellow bathrooms offer both a large bathtub and a separate (clear glass) shower, a hair-dryer, a large mirror, scales, bathrobes and slippers, an illuminated make-up mirror, a beautiful selection of hospitality products, etc. Both room service and a butler are available 24 hours a day.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Opened in 2006, the Al Raha Beach is an elongated complex bordering the sea, which cannot be seen from the outside. Once inside, you are greeted by a huge reception area and a carmine and yellow marble floor combined with a brightly coloured thick floral rug. With stained-glass windows on the ceiling reflecting the mosaic on the floor, the warm decor, perhaps a little overwhelming for unaccustomed eyes, offers an insight into the comfort that awaits. On the side of the room is the reception desk and opposite it, the cosy Mozart café with its red armchairs and tempting cakes. Why not stop for a drink in the 'Black Pearl', which, despite its size, manages to maintain its cosy appearance with its appealing lighting, carpeted floor, comfortable blue armchairs, wooden panelling, curtains and picture windows. Long bench seats run along the sides of the reception and a large picture window at the far end overlooks the terraced complex, on a maximum of 3 different levels. Classical musical is played across the complex throughout the day. The immaculate swimming pool area spans out towards the sea and includes an overflow pool, a small sloping pool, a large slide, a spray area and an aquatic bar, with shade provided by palm trees both in the water and surrounding it. An area enhanced with water features and fountains also runs along the curved building of the hotel. In addition to the rooms housed in the hotel building, another part consists of a series of villas which are often rented to people for a month or even longer. These villas face the sea and another overflow pool, making it hard to see where the pool ends and the sea begins. Peace and tranquillity are the order of the day here, with deckchairs provided around the lawned pool area for your comfort. There is also an elaborate playground for the children.
Beyond the reception of the large spa on the 3rd floor, you will find a large swimming pool with its own pool bar, a pool for children and a large jacuzzi. A small gym on the floor below gives guests the perfect opportunity to partake in various activities entirely undisturbed, with separate areas for men and women, each with a sauna, a hammam and a jacuzzi. A larger gym on the ground floor offers a host of modern machines. The children's club is open from 10:00am to 5:00pm for children of 3 to 12 years of age and is held in a colourful, enclosed room with various toys and games. The large blue and black-walled night club has a whole floor to itself but only opens on weekends.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

Music is played in all the hotel's restaurants. The main restaurant, Azur, serves à la carte Mediterranean cuisine and has picture windows along one side which allow plenty of light in. The kitchens, for their part, are open, and guests dining here also have the opportunity to sit out on the lawn. The other major restaurant is called Sevilla and its high ceilings combined with yet more picture windows, makes for very well-lit surroundings. Guests may dine from the (generous) buffet or from the à la carte menu. Lunch, for example, is very well presented, with no fewer than 26 starters, as well as ingredients for making your own salad, a cheeseboard, various types of bread, 19 oriental and international dishes including various sliced meats and crayfish, 31 desserts, etc. Armchairs and bench seats make for comfortable surroundings here too. The main swimming pool restaurant has tables laid out under palm trees, as well as individual tents, whilst the second swimming pool has a comfortable restaurant with a terrace.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The long beach, which is divided into two distinct parts, is cleaned every evening. On the villa side, the somewhat narrow, white and brown sandy beach normally makes for a peaceful place to relax on the few deckchairs provided. To the side of the main building, however, the white sandy beach is much better equipped with many cushioned plastic deckchairs and parasols. These are spaced far enough apart to ensure peace and relaxation for all. Be aware that you will come across some shelly areas in the shallow clear waters and even a few pebbles in some parts. Be aware, also, that although the swimming pools are supervised, the beaches are not. The watersports club is located at the far end of the resort, next to the marina (ask the concierge should you wish to partake in any such activities). The size of the rooms leaves ample space for an additional bed, or even two.

    To know

Considerable extension work to the hotel began in 2008 and it is due to be completed in 2010, with an additional 154 rooms, 3 restaurants and bar. Builders on various sites in the Al Raha area also work from 8:00am to 6:00pm, meaning that the noise can also be heard on the beach side of the hotel. The hotel offers direct access to the Al Raha shopping mall. 7 golf buggies are available to take you from one end of the resort to the other.
    Accommodation tip :
Steer clear of the rooms on the sea side of the hotel during the major works going on nearby! Spending any amount of time on the balcony will soon become unbearable.

One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

The Sofitel Abu Dhabi is another one of our favourites in the city. Located right across the road from the cornice, it is in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The hotel is extremely well-appointed and adapted to the country without a tad of brashness but a little touch of French influence - Sofitel after all, is known for its upmarket French credentials. Staff will greet you with a Bonjour and the food is worthy of its native France no matter where the hotel is in the world. An ideal hotel for a business clientele, but due to its high standard leisure facilities like the spa and restaurants, the Sofitel would also be suitable for leisure stays.

Anantara, the Thai hotel group, is renowned for its choice of natural sites and for its extremely high standards of service. With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge. At Anantara, the attention to detail makes all the difference.

For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool.
