Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a luxury hotel with the added bonus of sitting in an exclusive location: in a protected nature reserve of mangrove. A serene atmosphere reigns here by the pool, especially at sunset, when the nearby islands of mangrove forest come alive with birds. Anantara, the Thai hotel group, is renowned for its choice of natural sites and for its extremely high standards of service. With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge. At Anantara, the attention to detail makes all the difference.

    Location 6.5 /10

Although the hotel feels quite far-removed from the city centre, it is actually a short drive away from the airport (15 minutes) and the Sheikh Zayed Mosque as well as the city centre. Like most places in the city, there isn't much to do in the immediate surroundings so make sure you have a car to get around or plan for a taxi budget.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The hotel has 222 rooms split into six categories. The rooms range from 57m² for the first four categories to 180m² for the suites. The hotel also has larger residential apartments measuring up to 2,455m².

The rooms are extremely comfortable and well-appointed. The rooms are decorated similarly in classic earthy tones with a dash of orange or turquoise, but the main difference is in the view. Every room has a balcony, a king or twin bed, rain shower and bath tub, mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen TV and in-room safe. The rooms (excluding the suites) don't really differ greatly, apart from the Kasara Mangroves category; the rooms come with access to a separate lounge where snacks and light meals are served throughout the day.

Here, it really is the small details that make the difference, like there being an adaptor in the rooms so guests don't need to ask, or the staff heating milk when a guest orders tea, again, without even having to ask.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The hotel opened in 2012 and has been a success among loyal Anantara guests ever since, but while the hotel is one of our favourites, we found that the functions happening at the hotel (especially throughout the mont of November) is a real let-down. The blaring music played around the pool during these functions makes it impossible to enjoy the quiet of the mangrove while nursing a Martini Rosso on the hotel's lovely rooftop terrace.

Functions aside though, the hotel feels small and the service feels personal, despite its 222 rooms. And that was a huge plus for us. Being recognised by staff who seemed genuinely pleased to see us and not on automatic fake-smiling mode, was a real breath of fresh air.

The efficient and very kind service aside, and the pleasant atmosphere at the hotel aside, it also has a great outdoor pool facing islets of floating mangrove forest. The hotel offers kayaking trips around the mangrove islets at sunrise, the restaurants are upmarket and worth a try (see food and drink section below) as is the spa and its wonderful hammam (see spa section below).

There is also complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

There are two restaurants at the hotel: the all-day Impressions restaurant, where breakfast, lunch and dinner are served as a buffet, and Pachaylen, the traditional Thai restaurant that comes very highly recommended. The experience began with miang kham, a typical street snack in Thailand and Vietnam. Presented in a bamboo box, the small piles of food inside are to be mixed and put inside a betel leaf like a tiny parcel that you fill with shallots, a peanut, lime, ginger, some chilli, toasted coconut shavings, dried shrimp and sweet dipping sauce. The service was excellent and so was the food, which was actually reasonably priced. There is also the rooftop bar, which is the best place to watch the sun set behind Abu Dhabi's skyline beyond the mangrove islands. The hotel also has 24-hour room service.

    Spa 7.7 /10

The spa at the hotel has become one of the main attractions in the city for its beautiful and enormous hammam. With its large heated marble table in the centre and its copper-coloured mosaics and central dome, one could spend a whole day here. In the hammam there are also steam and sauna cabins. Guests must keep in mind that there are separate times for men and women. One of the signature treatments at the hotel is the hammam scrub, which is done in a separate shower room with a bed. Make sure that your skin is clean of any moisturiser or oil before this treatment or it won't work as well. For sports fiends there is also a gym.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

The Sofitel Abu Dhabi is another one of our favourites in the city. Located right across the road from the cornice, it is in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The hotel is extremely well-appointed and adapted to the country without a tad of brashness but a little touch of French influence - Sofitel after all, is known for its upmarket French credentials. Staff will greet you with a Bonjour and the food is worthy of its native France no matter where the hotel is in the world. An ideal hotel for a business clientele, but due to its high standard leisure facilities like the spa and restaurants, the Sofitel would also be suitable for leisure stays.

The first resort under the St Regis umbrella, The Saint Regis Saadiyat Island (not to be confused with The St Regis Abu Dhabi) is one of our favourite places to stay in Abu Dhabi. Not too far from the city centre and with a lovely beach, a lively holiday atmosphere reigns here. The lavish rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed; the facilities onsite are of a high standard and the sea views and sandy beach earn the resort those extra points for the top position in our Abu Dhabi hotel hotlist. The hotel is the ideal place to stay for guests on holiday (as opposed to business) and attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples as well as groups of friends.

For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

It is the only hotel on Sir Bani Yas island with a huge nature reserve! Everything here is carefully thought through with great care and attention. It is ideal if you're looking to unwind in a magnificent setting, with a view of the sea! On top of that, the two possible activities here are sports activities and exploration of the nature reserve: wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted, beach lovers not so much.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.
