The Intercontinental Abu Dhabi hotel is certainly full of surprises. From the outside, it looks uninteresting and dated, but as soon as you have crossed the threshold, you will doubtless be impressed by the beauty and modernity of its various areas which are so different from one another. Luxury and comfort are present from the reception hall to the bedrooms passing by the large marina. Some of its restaurants are unique and quite magical both for the quality of their cuisine and their decoration. In short, whether you are staying at the Intercontinental or not, you have to try out its bars and restaurants!

    Location 4.0 /10

Not far from the Corniche, the hotel is a 10-minute drive from Abu Dhabi's city centre and 25 minutes away from the capital's international airport. Waterbreak island is a 5-minute drive away - this is where you will find, among other things, the marina mall and the cultural village which presents the Emirates' way of life in the last century and its past, in general. It is also the spot where the United Arab Emirates' largest flag flies.

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

All 390 rooms have a view of the sea (at least on one side of the room) thanks to their large bay windows. The smallest type of accommodation is 441 sq ft. The standard rooms, known as 'Superior' are all located between the 3rd and 7th floors, while the 'Deluxe' rooms can be found between the 8th and 12th floors. Only the floor changes between these two categories, as the decoration is identical in both. As for the 'Club' rooms, they are located between the 14th and 19th floors and the six categories of suites are on the top floors of the hotel - for safety reasons, windows only half open! The soothing white and khaki decoration is homogenous in the suites where six different cushions are laid out on the snug king-size beds, all in white linen. A pale brown carpet, a khaki chaise longue, a sofa in an alcove made to look wider thanks to a mirror, a wide plasma screen with international and film channels, lit-up closets, a wooden desk and efficient lighting all add to the luxury ensemble. All rooms have individual air-conditioning, a free safe, a DVD player, a mini-bar with tea and coffee-making facilities, a direct telephone line and Internet connection (wireless, available for a fee), etc. As for the lovely spacious bathrooms, they are equipped with both a bathtub and a separate (brushed glass) shower, a marble unit, a hair-dryer, dressing-gowns and slippers, a lit-up magnifying mirror, and a beautiful selection of 'Floris' hospitality products, etc. The toilet is separate. The luxury suites all have a lounge area, a kitchen and a bedroom including an area where you can sit comfortably and read a book for example. Room-service and butler service is available 24-7, which is

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built in 1980 and almost entirely renovated in 2006, the Intercontinental Abu Dhabi shows its age from the outside, with its unsophisticated, bulky architecture. Do not pay too much attention to the outside of this 19-floor building, walk into quickly and admire its contemporary interior! Although the guests' privacy is respected in every room, the view is unfortunately obstructed by the surrounding building works. The long reception hall is very bright thanks to the omnipresent onyx marble (a shade of very bright yellow which almost looks orange). At one end, a pianist plays in the evening in the very comfortable lobby bar. The bay windows look out to a promenade, made of concrete and wooden planks, and the hotel's great semi-circular marina. The hotel's various superb restaurants are set all along the promenade; four of them have terraces, which are nicely laid out with chairs and comfortable sofas padded with cushions. The pool area is on the third floor of the building and it is kept at a constant temperature of 28° C. There is also a pool dedicated to children and in the centre of the area stands the aqua bar. Somewhere between the sky and the marina, you will come across a huge fitness centre where you can make use of the numerous high-tech apparatus which are all equipped with television screens. An aerobics room is also available, as well as a nearby spa - a truly relaxing humid area which is open to both men and women. On the 18th floor, the hotel boasts the capital city's largest club lounge - an elongated 6,000 sq ft room. To the left and right, you can see the city through large gleaming windows. Brown leather chairs are laid out around black tables and the floor is paved with marble. Don't forget that there are two lounges where you can go if you need to kill time while your room is being prepared and there is also a library.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

wonderful! The hotel's 5 reputed restaurants, which all have a bar, are mostly open for dinner only. The Italian restaurant 'Boccaccio' is set over several floors, and the atmosphere is gentle, friendly and warm. Bottles of wine, mainly French and Italian, are nicely arranged on a set of shelves and even the music is good.
The brand new 'Yacht club' is really worth trying out and is very popular with the local 'jet set', which is understandable when you see the decoration and the very elaborate cocktail and liquor menu. Fruit cocktails are the highlight, thanks to the mixologist who can prepare cocktails according to your very own preferences. They are therefore a complete surprise! That will be for the more adventurous ones among you, others can choose from classic international cocktails, mocktails and other liquors. If you like vodka, you will be delighted with the choice of 54 different types. There is also a selection of 40 to 50 wines that can be ordered by the glass. As far as the ambience is concerned, you would not talk of a DJ here, but rather a 'mood guru'. The ventilator in the place, built over several levels, is 24 ft wide. Boat masts, sails and plasma screens are the setting of the 'Pacific dream', which is ready to take you on a voyage of Polynesian cuisine, prepared by a French chef who has been awarded two Michelin stars.
The brilliant and brand new 'Chamas' restaurant is unique in the United Arab Emirates, and it uses the Brazilian concept 'Rodizio.' This restaurant is so successful that it is always full! 6 tons of meat are wolfed down every month and a selection of 15 different types of meat can be seen roasting in the flames of the oven at any one time. You can have as much as you can eat in this restaurant, the chef of which is Brazilian. The bar is on the ground floor, all clad in black leather, where you can listen to a Latino band playing before you go up to eat on the first floor. There is no menu here - salads are created according to the guests' requests, and served with oriental specialities. The chefs' bustling activity and the sight of the meat cooking away makes for a real spectacle. The Caïpirinha is prepared right in front of the guests, who are comfortably seated in dark green, semi-circular sofas.
Don't forget that out on the beach, the 'Fishmarket' restaurant serves Thai cuisine and all sorts of fish. 'Selections' is the hotel's main restaurant though and it is the only one which does not have a terrace as it is on the third floor, next to the pool. However, its large bay windows allow plenty of light in, which is a real plus, and its view of the marina is very pleasant - having breakfast there is a real treat. The hotel's largest restaurant, it offers a wide choice of salads, served as a buffet, which is laid out in the centre of the elongated, peaceful room. Its wine menu also has a great choice of wines and liquors from all over the world. Indeed, it is possible to eat something here 24 hours a day.

    Beach 7.45 /10

You will need to go through the marina to get to the hotel's private beach close by. There is a large lawn along the beach which is used for special events or to play football. This is where you will also find the restaurant specialised in fish and seafood laid out on crushed ice. The beach is wide and 935 ft long and its sand is white and cleaned on a regular basis. No pebbles or waves trouble the peaceful and crystal-clear water, but that doesn't stop the beach from being supervised by life guards. Plastic deckchairs fitted with mats and parasols are laid out in four neat rows, and a fifth one has been set up on the lawn. While you're relaxing on one end of the beach, the children can play in the playground at the other end of the beach. The Ritz Carlton's villas are currently being built on a natural island.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Sofitel Abu Dhabi is another one of our favourites in the city. Located right across the road from the cornice, it is in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The hotel is extremely well-appointed and adapted to the country without a tad of brashness but a little touch of French influence - Sofitel after all, is known for its upmarket French credentials. Staff will greet you with a Bonjour and the food is worthy of its native France no matter where the hotel is in the world. An ideal hotel for a business clientele, but due to its high standard leisure facilities like the spa and restaurants, the Sofitel would also be suitable for leisure stays.

With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge.
