Amy Adejokun Section editor

The Park Inn is a very good three-star hotel around the Yas Island Plaza. It is a great option for travellers on a budget as the rooms are reasonably priced and are comfortable. Part of the Rezidor Group, the hotel isn't a luxury establishment, but it does have the advantage of being right next door to its sister hotel, the Radisson Blu, where guests can also use the facilities. While the hotel isn't the reason come on holiday here, it is a good base to explore the rest of the city from.

    Location 6.0 /10

Only a five-minute drive from the airport, the hotel is located on as Island, a couple minutes' walk to one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World, the Formula 1 race track. There isn't much else on the island apart from the Yas Marina just behind the Viceroy Hotel. The authorities were also in the process of building the beach (again), which will be behind Yas Plaza and its various hotels (Media Rotana, Centro by Rotana, Radisson Blu, Staybridge Suites and the Crowne Plaza, which we have also reviewed).

Airport taxi tip: when you arrive at the airport you will need to queue for a taxi. As the journey is extremely short expect most taxi drivers to turn down the run. Either offer to pay a little more than what the meter indicates (offer up to 40 AED in total; which is about £6.00). The taxi usher may also suggest you take a private taxi, which doesn't have a meter - negotiate the price before getting in.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

In total, there are 204 rooms, 10 of which are suites. The rooms are all fairly similar, with the only real difference being the view. Some of the rooms have a plaza (neighbouring hotels) view and the rest have a sea view. Although the rooms aren't luxurious, they are warm and cosy. Guests can choose to have either twin beds or double beds (two single beds pushed together). Every room has a flat-screen television, mini fridge (that can be filled at an extra cost), a safe and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. The bathrooms have shower cabins and Park Inn branded toiletries.

The suites have bath tubs and a separate living area. They also have a small balcony. Otherwise te décor varies very little, with all rooms kitted out in the brand's striped blue carpets and matching bedspreads.

    Overview 6.70 /10

Open in 2010, the Park Inn has seven floors and is a modest hotel with a colourful décor; the brand's identity is based mainly on bold splashes of blue, red, yellow and green. The hotel is located right on the ocean front and although there is no beach (yet), there is a lovely green golf course lining the water, making the views some of the best in the city.

In terms of facilities, there is the Radisson spa and gym just next door, tennis courts, a kids' club. The hotel pool is very small; guests can pop next door to use the Radisson's pool, which is a little bigger.

    Food and drink 5.70 /10

The hotel has two restaurants. Mint, which is where breakfast is served and Amerigos, which is a sports bar come Mexican restaurant. Inside, the bar isn't the most pleasant of places for a meal as I is a little bland and dark, however, dinner is usually served outside on the patio that lines the hotel pool. The food was reasonably priced and very tasty; the menu offers a wide range of Mexican specialities. For die hard Mexican fans, it is best to keep in mind that although the food is good, the flavours have been adapted for an international palate. Amerigos also has a Tequila bar, with a range of traditional Tequilas to sample. Like in most hotel bars in Abu Dhabi, guests can smoke in the bar.

A breakfast buffet is served daily in Mint, a fresh white space with hints of lime green. Guests can also opt to have their meals in their room as the hotel has 24-hour room service. Otherwise, for guests wanting a little variety without having to venture too far away, there is also the Italian restaurant Filini just next door at the Radisson, Park Inn's sister hotel, which serves a delicious variety of delicious Italian fare.

    Spa

The Park Inn doesn't have its own spa, but as it adjoins the Radisson, guests can use the spa there. While the Radisson spa isn't the most luxurious, it has all the essential elements including a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and excellent massage therapists. Have the Rose Renewal Facial and Back Massage and ask for the lovely Ha; her hands will unknot even the most stressed of bodies. Just be prepared to fall in and out of sleep for an hour!

    Beach

Although the hotel is on an island, Yas Island, there are no beaches here yet. While we visited, the authorities were trying to build a beach to line the golf course just behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel, but having failed once before, Yas Island may have to wait a while longer before it can get its own beach!

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

Located in the developing area of the same name, the Al Raha beach, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts group, is a luxury hotel which stretches out along the seafront. There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

The Centro Yas Island by Rotana, is a three-star hotel that is excellent value for money for visitors on a budget; it is one of our favourite low-budget options in the city. The Yas Island hotel is an ideal place to stay if you don't want to overspend on accommodation while in the city.

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

The Radisson Blu Hotel is located on Yas Island five minutes from the airport. Although the hotel isn't anything fancy, it is comfortable and has an excellent Italian restaurant and spa. The hotel also has one of the most pleasant views in the city; built right on the edge of the island, it is bordered by a green undulating golf course, and the sea (although there is no beach), adding to the idyllic setting of the hotel. Despite the simple décor of the hotel, there is a real holiday atmosphere due to its sea front location, which we liked very much. The hotel is a pleasant one to be based at as it is far away from the bustle of the gleaming city centre but close enough to drive to the city's attractions. A hotel that is suitable for a wide-ranging clientele from golfers to families and couples.

The main difference between the hotels on the Yas Island Plaza, is the view. While some have a plaza or Formula One race track view, the others have a sea view, which puts a completely different spin on your stay. The Crowne Plaza sits in prime location for sea views. There is no beach on Yas Island (yet), but there is a beautiful golf course that lines the water, again, reinforcing that holiday atmosphere. The hotel is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families, groups and guests on business.

Staybridge Suites, part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, is located ion Yas Island close to the airport and is right next to its sister hotel, the Crowne Plaza (also reviewed by us). As our hosts repeated a good many times, the Staybridge concept is completely different to that of other hotels; the objective is to create a self-service homely atmosphere at each property. The hotel is an all-suite hotel, and although the décor is a little generic for our taste, Staybridge Suites is a good base to explore the city from for families on a small budget and in need of a spacious room.

For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

Not too far from the city centre and with a lovely beach, a lively holiday atmosphere reigns here. The lavish rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed; the facilities onsite are of a high standard and the sea views and sandy beach earn the resort those extra points for the top position in our Abu Dhabi hotel hotlist.
