The Radisson Blu Hotel is located on Yas Island five minutes from the airport. Although the hotel isn't anything fancy, it is comfortable and has an excellent Italian restaurant and spa. The hotel also has one of the most pleasant views in the city; built right on the edge of the island, it is bordered by a green undulating golf course, and the sea (although there is no beach), adding to the idyllic setting of the hotel. Despite the simple décor of the hotel, there is a real holiday atmosphere due to its sea front location, which we liked very much. The hotel is a pleasant one to be based at as it is far away from the bustle of the gleaming city centre but close enough to drive to the city's attractions. A hotel that is suitable for a wide-ranging clientele from golfers to families and couples.

    Location 1.0 /10

Only a five-minute drive from the airport, the hotel is located on on Yas Island between the Park Inn, its sister hotel, and the Crowne Plaza. It is also a couple minutes' walk to one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World, the Formula 1 race track. There isn't much else on the island apart from the Yas Marina just behind the Viceroy Hotel. The authorities were also in the process of building the beach (again), which will be behind Yas Plaza and its various hotels (Media Rotana, Centro by Rotana, Park Inn, Staybridge Suites and the Crowne Plaza, which we have also reviewed).

Airport taxi tip: when you arrive at the airport you will need to queue for a taxi. As the journey is extremely short expect most taxi drivers to turn down the run. Either offer to pay a little more than what the meter indicates (offer up to 40 AED in total; which is about £6.00). The taxi usher may also suggest you take a private taxi, which doesn't have a meter - negotiate the price before getting in.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

With 397 rooms, the hotel is of a rather large size and can feel very busy when fully booked - especially in the restaurants and around the pool. The winning feature of the rooms here is the view of the two-tone blue sea and golf course, providing a real holiday atmosphere despite the lack of a beach.

The rooms all look similar and each has a flat-screen television, mini-bar, bathrobe and slippers, safe, complimentary tea and coffee making facilities, an iPod docking station, a trouser press and a king size bed. There are four room categories: Standard, Business, Superior and Suite. The hotel also has barrier-free rooms for people with restricted movement. The rooms are all similar with the exception of the view. The Club room also has special access to the club lounge. The rooms comes in at 36m² but the suites are about twice the size as they have a separate living area.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Radisson Blu has a loyal following of guests who won't stay anywhere else wherever they are in the world, and although the hotel isn't luxurious, it is easy to see why. Comfortable, of a good standard and easy-going, the Radisson Blu Yas Island is a good choice for guests who want to stay close to the sea (despite there being no beach yet) while having all the usual mod-cons.

The facilities on site include the Fast Track lobby bar, the Assymetri all-day restaurant and Filini the Italian outlet with a lovely veranda that runs along the golf course's edge close to the sea. The hotel also has a well equipped spa with a gym, sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and very good therapists. There is another bar by the pool, which is of a fair size and has great sea views. The hotel shares facilities with its sister hotel, the adjoining Park Inn, where there is a Mexican restaurant, a sports bar, tennis courts and a small playground for children. There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The Radisson Blu has two restaurants and two bars. Guests can also choose to sample the Mexican restaurant, Amerigos, next door at the Park Inn. The food here is served outside on the patio close to the pool and the food is delicious - although the Mexican flavours have been adapted for an international palate. Assymetri, at the Radisson, is the all-day restaurant, where a buffet is served at every meal. Our favourite place to enjoy lunch or dinner is Filini, the hotel's Italian restaurant. Set close to the golf course lining the sea, the veranda has its own discreet and soothing water feature. The food here, from the mozzarella to the seared scallops, pasta and pizza, is excellent and extremely varied. The wine list is very elaborate too with an endless choice of Italian wines to try. The menu here will without doubt keep guests and locals coming back regularly. The service is also top-notch without being too much.

    Spa 7.7 /10

While the Radisson spa isn't the most luxurious, it has all the essential elements including a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and excellent massage therapists. Have the Rose Renewal Facial and Back Massage and ask for the lovely Ha, one of the spa therapists; her hands will unknot even the most stressed of bodies. Just be prepared to fall in and out of sleep for an hour! The treatment releases tension, stimulates the nervous system and rebalances the body's energy flow. The products used are either of the Anne Semonin brand or Aromatherapy Associates.

    Beach

Although the hotel is on an island, Yas Island, there are no beaches here yet. While we visited, the authorities were trying to build a beach to line the golf course just behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel, but having failed once before, Yas Island may have to wait a while longer before it can get its own beach!

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

Located in the developing area of the same name, the Al Raha beach, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts group, is a luxury hotel which stretches out along the seafront. There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

The Park Inn is a very good three-star hotel around the Yas Island Plaza. It is a great option for travellers on a budget as the rooms are reasonably priced and are comfortable. Part of the Rezidor Group, the hotel isn't a luxury establishment, but it does have the advantage of being right next door to its sister hotel, the Radisson Blu, where guests can also use the facilities. While the hotel isn't the reason come on holiday here, it is a good base to explore the rest of the city from.

The main difference between the hotels on the Yas Island Plaza, is the view. While some have a plaza or Formula One race track view, the others have a sea view, which puts a completely different spin on your stay. The Crowne Plaza sits in prime location for sea views. There is no beach on Yas Island (yet), but there is a beautiful golf course that lines the water, again, reinforcing that holiday atmosphere. The hotel is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families, groups and guests on business.

Staybridge Suites, part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, is located ion Yas Island close to the airport and is right next to its sister hotel, the Crowne Plaza (also reviewed by us). As our hosts repeated a good many times, the Staybridge concept is completely different to that of other hotels; the objective is to create a self-service homely atmosphere at each property. The hotel is an all-suite hotel, and although the décor is a little generic for our taste, Staybridge Suites is a good base to explore the city from for families on a small budget and in need of a spacious room.

For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

Not too far from the city centre and with a lovely beach, a lively holiday atmosphere reigns here.
