The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

    Location 7.0 /10

Next to the hotel, there is a Souq of good quality (although the atmosphere is a bit sterilised!) designed according to the local style. It takes about 20 minutes by car to reach the centre of Abu Dhabi!

    Accommodation 8.95 /10

The resort includes 214 rooms, 161 apartments and a few villas. The rooms are superb and impeccable havens of peace which are tastefully decorated in a contemporary style with Arabic touches. Outside, you will see pretty balconies with bench seats beneath the archways. There are two kinds of standard room (Deluxe and premium, the latter has a walk-in closet) that cover an area of 480 sq ft and are designed to help you relax. The view of the sea and the mosque (in most of the rooms) is breathtaking. It is all about comfort here, with the full-length bay windows, fantastic lighting, cosy king-sized bed, individual and discreet air-conditioning, free safe, DVD player, desk, mirror, armchairs, very well-stocked mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities (with various glasses), beautiful plasma screen televison (with numerous channels), direct telephone line and Internet access (free cable and wireless connection), etc. The same furniture with wood carvings is found in most of the accommodation. The shades of colour are soft and include browns and creams. The rooms are spacious and well-furnished with a little arcade-sheltered cove. As for the sumptuous bathrooms, they are decorated with cream-coloured tiles, from floor to ceiling, and include little stone engravings. They have a bathtub, a separate shower, a hair-dryer, dressing-gowns and slippers, a set of modern scales, an illuminating mirror, a small toilet bag with a pair of scissors, a magnificent set of hospitality products from the Occitane brand, bath salts, washing powder, a sponge, etc. The toilet and bathroom are separate. Room-service is available 24/7.

    Overview 8.70 /10

This sprawling establishment, built like a palace, opened in 2007. Lush vegetation is found adorning all the different parts of the estate. There are small avenues planted with palm-trees and rich soil plants and there is a unique and very practical 2,000 ft artificial canal that enables guests to get around the many areas of the resort (including the souq and the spa) in one of the three available abras (traditional boats). As the guests walk in, they are met by the impressive sight of the reception area and its guilded, curved ceiling. Next to it there is an enormous and very comfortable lobby bar. It includes large Arab arch-shaped windows that open onto a balcony. Cigar enthusiats will undoubtedly appreciate the superb and somber cigar lounge and its wine cellar. In the evening it is hard to avoid the very famous 'al hanah' (which means bar in Arabic), its black marble counter and the crystal rain over the barmen who are making up the cocktails. If you go down one floor, you will discover a peaceful, sumptuous area with a rectangular infinity pool, facing the mosque in the distance. On either side of the pool there are raffia palm deck chairs with two symmetrical kiosks. There are another two swimming-pools (open to all) in the midst of the various buildings that house the apartments! Furthermore, each one of the 6 villas of the resort has its own private pool. The beautiful cream and brown-coloured spa, with its soft lighting makes available 10 pretty and spacious treatment rooms, one of which is reserved for couples. The two signature treatments of the spa are the hot stone massages and the chi balance. The greatest intimacy is guaranteed here. Little lights hang from the ceiling of the superb, green, Turkish baths. On the top floor of the spa, there is a state of the art gym with around ten television screens and window bays on either side. One part is dedicated to women, and another to men. There is also a large outdoor rectangular swimming-pool. This very relaxing, ochre and carmine-coloured setting is reserved for women only on Wednesday mornings. In the corner a snack bar offers light, healthy food. On the second floor, guests may attend any of the different courses on offer (including yoga, for example).

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

Guests can choose between 5 restaurants. The main restaurant 'So far' offers extraordinary buffets from 7:00 am till 11:30 am, from noon till 3:00 pm and from 6:00 pm till 11:00 pm. Sushi, numerous appetizers, and various salads served on ice, etc. are on offer. The rest of the time, you can also order from the menu. The large cream-coloured restaurant hall, adorned with archways and bay windows, is to be found on the ground floor, adjacent to the garden. Behind the monumental staircase that leads to the lobby, the view of all these delicious, succulent dishes will drive your taste buds wild. Take note of the effort put into the presentation of the desserts (sweets on a stick, chocolate fountains, etc.)! Next to the main restaurant is an elegant Chinese restaurant in a rectangular room decorated with Chinese lamps, wooden panels and silk. Alternatively, there is the much appreciated Vietnamese restaurant (awarded for the exceptional quality of its dishes). A little behind the main building, the designer restaurant 'Pearl and Caviar' offers many local fish dishes, but also a few European dishes. Lemon and olive oil are on the menu. As beautiful during the day as it is at night, with its simple colours and highly modern setting, the restaurant is decorated in black, white, grey and blue. The presence of the pearls makes the place all the more fancy. The Italian chef's menu is full of promises, all of which are kept! It is primarily designed for caviar lovers (the caviar comes from Iran). There are three sorts of caviar, served with the same ingredients (small eggs, sliced onions, fresh capers, blinies and cream and parsley). The abalone (from Brittany) on the menu is delicious, as is the crab. Meat lovers should not miss out on the 'Wagyu filet with its fois gras'. The wine list is extensive too and offers much choice in the way of French wine (but there are also a few bottles from Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Germany, Chile, etc.). White and pink champagnes are also on offer. Next to the reception, you will find yourself in France in the refined and distinguished 'Bor d'eau' restaurant which can accommodate 48 guests at the most.

    Beach 8.45 /10

Next to the hotel there are two very nice beaches that are attached to the resort and stretch over some 3,000 ft. They face the capital's superb mosque, which can be seen in the distance. Its white and fine sand is cleaned every day. The water is clear and there are no waves or currents to disturb the tranquility of this spacious beach, which is kept under the surveillance of lifeguards. Plastic deck chairs with mattresses and parasols await the hotel guests. The services provided in the hotel extend to the beach. All the facilities are brand new but there is no nautical club.

Located in the developing area of the same name, the Al Raha beach, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts group, is a luxury hotel which stretches out along the seafront. There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

The Radisson Blu Hotel is located on Yas Island five minutes from the airport. Although the hotel isn't anything fancy, it is comfortable and has an excellent Italian restaurant and spa. The hotel also has one of the most pleasant views in the city; built right on the edge of the island, it is bordered by a green undulating golf course, and the sea (although there is no beach), adding to the idyllic setting of the hotel. Despite the simple décor of the hotel, there is a real holiday atmosphere due to its sea front location, which we liked very much. The hotel is a pleasant one to be based at as it is far away from the bustle of the gleaming city centre but close enough to drive to the city's attractions. A hotel that is suitable for a wide-ranging clientele from golfers to families and couples.

The main difference between the hotels on the Yas Island Plaza, is the view. While some have a plaza or Formula One race track view, the others have a sea view, which puts a completely different spin on your stay. The Crowne Plaza sits in prime location for sea views. There is no beach on Yas Island (yet), but there is a beautiful golf course that lines the water, again, reinforcing that holiday atmosphere. The hotel is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families, groups and guests on business.

Staybridge Suites, part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, is located ion Yas Island close to the airport and is right next to its sister hotel, the Crowne Plaza (also reviewed by us). As our hosts repeated a good many times, the Staybridge concept is completely different to that of other hotels; the objective is to create a self-service homely atmosphere at each property. The hotel is an all-suite hotel, and although the décor is a little generic for our taste, Staybridge Suites is a good base to explore the city from for families on a small budget and in need of a spacious room.

With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.
