The Sheraton Abu Dhabi offers a very good comfort level, and a variety of restaurants in a compact space. An ideal hotel for a beach stop during a journey - alone or with a group - in the Emirates.

    Location 6.0 /10

At the western end of the Corniche of Abu Dhabi, 1 mile from the town centre, and 20 miles from the airport. Expect 30 min for the transfer.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

There are 272 rooms, and 17 suites. The "deluxe" (standard) accommodations are on the first 4 floors. The next 3 floors house the "tower rooms" which come with a series of advantages: the reception occup?es the 6th floor, free Internet access in the Business Lounge, breakfast, drinks, and free snacks in the afternoon. As for the view: half of the accommodations overlook the Creek (an arm of the sea between the town and Lulu Island). The other half overlook the buildings in Dubaï centre. There is no balcony, it is a small minus, or there is a little area without furniture. You can stay there with your family (the rooms are equipped to receive 2 adults and one child) but it will be tight: 172 ft² for the "deluxe"accommodations, no extra space. On the other hand, the furnishings are well chosen, the bedding (fine sheets, soft pillows) is luxury and the bathroom, although small,  has all the comforts. Decor enthusiasts will notice the recessed arabic-style niche. Other amenities include (besides bathtubs and hair dryers), a shower, robes, a scale, a magnifying mirror, and complimentary products from Greenline in the bathroom. In the rooms - air conditioning,  satellite television, a direct telephone line, a minibar with a kit for tea/coffee, and a safe. Water bottles, and a basket of fresh fruits are provided every day.

    Overview 7.95 /10

Open in 1978 and renovated in 2003, the Sheraton Abu Dhabi is an orange 8 storey building whose shape resembles a... refinery. A wink at the local economy, different from Dubai, Abu Dhabi lives on the extraction and treatment of the black gold of the Gulf. In the entrance you will f?nd the reception area, common lounge areas and staircase leading to the first floor - a mixture of styles frequent in the Emirates: armchairs and wingchairs of western traditional style, wrought iron oriental lamps, frosted glass decorated with arabesques, and colourful veined marble. A combination a little too cluttered for the tourist. Luckily, the restaurants and rooms are much more toned down. Outside, areas for relaxation and for children: The most spacious swimming pool (82 x 50 ft) has a pool-bar. The second pool, a bit below, has a water slide. For young people, a shallow pool is close by. And since it is sunny all year around, the hotel had the good idea of extending a canvas sunshade over it. For the adults there are lounge chairs, no big space between the chairs but they are not facing one another either. Lounge chairs and sunshades are set out in secluded areas of the gardens around the swimming pools, planted with tropical vegetation (palm trees, banana trees). Towels are furnished at the swimming pool stand.

    Food and drink 8.20 /10

There are 5 restaurants, all of them serving different cuisines: Mexican, Thai, Spanish, Italian, and seafood. If you have to choose one, try the Italian restaurant where Susy Massetti, from Milan, skillfully prepares good recipes from the local area and her native country. She has a preference for pasta pomodoro (pasta with tomato sauce), a very simple dish, but very delicious when you have good ingredients. For gourmets of the Botte, nothing to worry about, the menu is far from skipping over the gastronomic associations: marinated tuna with lime and candied tomato, risotto with asparagus and lobster, duck magret in balsamic vinegar. The restaurant room has an open kitchen but no terrace, too bad. No terrace in the main restaurant Flavours either, but modest Asian decor, set up on two levels with tables looking over the garden. In the morning, a complete breakfast buffet is served (smoked salmon, cheeses, cold cuts, english hot plates, omelettes by request). Coffee is served at the table. 5 bars, some with space for a restaurant, are also available in the hotel.

    Beach 7.20 /10

The beach of the Sheraton was built by digging a lagoon under the bridge of the road of the Corniche. Therefore, no open view there. Some will say that the swimming area is artificial, but because of the colour of the water (turquoise going towards emerald), and the fine sand, it is difficult to reproach it. The depth of the lagoon grows slowly, therefore young children can play there without fear. There are no algae nor sea urchins. In the middle of the water, an anchored inflatable mattress is used as a diving board (a fee is charged when it is for private use as a sunroom) and all around, plastic lounge chairs are lined up (4 rows) under the shade of canvas sunshades. Mattresses and towels are provided. Note: none of the water sports are free.

    To know

The fitness room, opened to guests from both inside and outside the hotel, has reserved hours for only women: 4 times a week from 10 a.m to noon. Therefore, during these hours, men cannot access this facility. The rest of the time, the room is opened to all.

    Accommodation advice
Choose a "tower" room (extra charge) to get access to a VIP service (see details in the paragraph on accommodations). Otherwise, the view does not matter (town or sea), because from the sea side you can also see the port docks, and the balcony (when there is one) is too small to sit on.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Intercontinental Abu Dhabi hotel is certainly full of surprises. From the outside, it looks uninteresting and dated, but as soon as you have crossed the threshold, you will doubtless be impressed by the beauty and modernity of its various areas which are so different from one another. Luxury and comfort are present from the reception hall to the bedrooms passing by the large marina. Some of its restaurants are unique and quite magical both for the quality of their cuisine and their decoration. In short, whether you are staying at the Intercontinental or not, you have to try out its bars and restaurants!

The Sofitel Abu Dhabi is another one of our favourites in the city. Located right across the road from the cornice, it is in the heart of Abu Dhabi. The hotel is extremely well-appointed and adapted to the country without a tad of brashness but a little touch of French influence - Sofitel after all, is known for its upmarket French credentials. Staff will greet you with a Bonjour and the food is worthy of its native France no matter where the hotel is in the world. An ideal hotel for a business clientele, but due to its high standard leisure facilities like the spa and restaurants, the Sofitel would also be suitable for leisure stays.

The Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a luxury hotel with the added bonus of sitting in an exclusive location: in a protected nature reserve of mangrove. A serene atmosphere reigns here by the pool, especially at sunset, when the nearby islands of mangrove forest come alive with birds. Anantara, the Thai hotel group, is renowned for its choice of natural sites and for its extremely high standards of service. With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge. At Anantara, the attention to detail makes all the difference.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

A 'Small luxury hotel of the world', Desert Islands is a true haven of peace, totally isolated and very far from any kind of local life. It is the only hotel on Sir Bani Yas island with a huge nature reserve! Everything here is carefully thought through with great care and attention. It is ideal if you're looking to unwind in a magnificent setting, with a view of the sea! On top of that, the two possible activities here are sports activities and exploration of the nature reserve: wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted, beach lovers not so much.

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

The first resort under the St Regis umbrella, The Saint Regis Saadiyat Island (not to be confused with The St Regis Abu Dhabi) is one of our favourite places to stay in Abu Dhabi. Not too far from the city centre and with a lovely beach, a lively holiday atmosphere reigns here. The lavish rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed; the facilities onsite are of a high standard and the sea views and sandy beach earn the resort those extra points for the top position in our Abu Dhabi hotel hotlist. The hotel is the ideal place to stay for guests on holiday (as opposed to business) and attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples as well as groups of friends.
