For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

    Location 8.0 /10

The Westin is located between the airport and the conference centre at Hyatt Gate. There isn't much to do in the surrounding neighbourhood, which has yet to be developed. However, golfing amateurs will be relieved to know that the elaborate Abu Dhabi Golf Centre is just a short buggy ride away! The airport is about 20 minutes by car and Yas Island is less than 10 minutes away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 172 rooms, making the hotel fairly small by Abu Dhabi standards. The rooms have a similar décor across all categories. Very simple, almost bland actually, the rooms have been decorated in a natural colour scheme with simple materials to reflect the fresh feeling throughout the hotel.

Every room has a large flat-screen television, an iPod docking station, mini-bar, safe, espresso and tea making facilities (complimentary), 24-hour room service and of course, a Heavenly bed ? there are even Heavenly cribs available for the little ones! Otherwise the main difference between the rooms is size and view. The Premium rooms, mostly on the lower floors have direct access to the pool area, whereas the suites and deluxe rooms higher up have a view of the golfing green. During our visit, the presidential suite was due to open, which is set to take up the entire top floor of the eagle-structure of the hotel.

    Overview 7.70 /10

As soon as one walks across the threshold into the lobby, a sense of calm takes over. Its large open spaces with a strong focus on using the natural elements to create a soothing atmosphere, doesn't leave guests indifferent and it is precisely this feeling of wellbeing that is hard to tie down, that keeps people coming back to Westin.

We loved the stones walls, the different floor levels, the hushed lighting, quiet background uplifting music and the fresh signature smell of the hotel. By the time we had finished have a look around, we were ready to curl up in one of the armchairs in the lobby overlooking the golfing green!

Open in 2011, the hotel is close to the golf course, which is its main focus, there are two outdoor pools (one a lap pool and the other more of a relaxation area), a gym and a lovely spa. There are also four food and drink restaurants and bars./p>

    Food and drink 7.70 /10

The Westin wellbeing concept is also applied to its restaurants and bars. The lobby lounge for instance, serves a large range of 'slow' food; the ingredients in the snacks offered (sandwiches, salads, smoothies?) have been carefully selected for their energetic and nutritional properties. Rest assured though, as there is plenty of variety - including a delicious cheesecake that may sit heavily on the hips, but sits quite well on the taste buds!

Otherwise the other choices include The Shades (snack bar), Agadir (Moroccan), Fairways (international) , Lemon and Lime (international) as well as The Retreat sports bar and The Lounge in the lobby.

Although we didn't get to taste the cuisine served here, the setting for each restaurant, especially Agadir, makes for a welcome change from the generic non descript 'airport lounge' style restaurants that are becoming more and more common.

    Spa 7.7 /10

The Heavenly Spa by Westin continues the fresh and soothing feeling of the hotel. Small but quaint and very relaxing, treatments here leave guests feeling bright-eyed and rejuvenated.

    To know

The Westin is known for exporting a wellbeing attitude within its hotels - and the difference with other hotels is startling. Westin is part of the hotel giant, Starwood and has hotels across the world.

Westin guests also get a discount on Abu Dhabi Golf Club passes.

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

Located in the developing area of the same name, the Al Raha beach, a member of the Preferred Hotels & Resorts group, is a luxury hotel which stretches out along the seafront. There are many activities on offer here thanks to the various facilities available, and the generous restaurant services are among the best you will find. Be aware, though, that the decor is very over-the-top and may take you aback.

The Centro Yas Island by Rotana, is a three-star hotel that is excellent value for money for visitors on a budget; it is one of our favourite low-budget options in the city. The Yas Island hotel is an ideal place to stay if you don't want to overspend on accommodation while in the city.

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

The Radisson Blu Hotel is located on Yas Island five minutes from the airport. Although the hotel isn't anything fancy, it is comfortable and has an excellent Italian restaurant and spa. The hotel also has one of the most pleasant views in the city; built right on the edge of the island, it is bordered by a green undulating golf course, and the sea (although there is no beach), adding to the idyllic setting of the hotel. Despite the simple décor of the hotel, there is a real holiday atmosphere due to its sea front location, which we liked very much. The hotel is a pleasant one to be based at as it is far away from the bustle of the gleaming city centre but close enough to drive to the city's attractions. A hotel that is suitable for a wide-ranging clientele from golfers to families and couples.

The main difference between the hotels on the Yas Island Plaza, is the view. While some have a plaza or Formula One race track view, the others have a sea view, which puts a completely different spin on your stay. The Crowne Plaza sits in prime location for sea views. There is no beach on Yas Island (yet), but there is a beautiful golf course that lines the water, again, reinforcing that holiday atmosphere. The hotel is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families, groups and guests on business.

Staybridge Suites, part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, is located ion Yas Island close to the airport and is right next to its sister hotel, the Crowne Plaza (also reviewed by us). As our hosts repeated a good many times, the Staybridge concept is completely different to that of other hotels; the objective is to create a self-service homely atmosphere at each property. The hotel is an all-suite hotel, and although the décor is a little generic for our taste, Staybridge Suites is a good base to explore the city from for families on a small budget and in need of a spacious room.

The Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a luxury hotel with the added bonus of sitting in an exclusive location: in a protected nature reserve of mangrove. A serene atmosphere reigns here by the pool, especially at sunset, when the nearby islands of mangrove forest come alive with birds. Anantara, the Thai hotel group, is renowned for its choice of natural sites and for its extremely high standards of service. With a great setting, an impressive hammam and an authentic Thai restaurant, the Eastern Mangroves by Anantara is a cosy hotel that is successful at providing a personalised service - and this is precisely what sets this hotel apart from the rest. An ideal hotel for guests not wanting to be too far from the city but away from the main hubbub while remaining close to the water's edge. At Anantara, the attention to detail makes all the difference.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

A 'Small luxury hotel of the world', Desert Islands is a true haven of peace, totally isolated and very far from any kind of local life. It is the only hotel on Sir Bani Yas island with a huge nature reserve! Everything here is carefully thought through with great care and attention. It is ideal if you're looking to unwind in a magnificent setting, with a view of the sea! On top of that, the two possible activities here are sports activities and exploration of the nature reserve: wildlife enthusiasts will be delighted, beach lovers not so much.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.

The first resort under the St Regis umbrella, The Saint Regis Saadiyat Island (not to be confused with The St Regis Abu Dhabi) is one of our favourite places to stay in Abu Dhabi. Not too far from the city centre and with a lovely beach, a lively holiday atmosphere reigns here. The lavish rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed; the facilities onsite are of a high standard and the sea views and sandy beach earn the resort those extra points for the top position in our Abu Dhabi hotel hotlist. The hotel is the ideal place to stay for guests on holiday (as opposed to business) and attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from families to couples as well as groups of friends.
