Yas Island Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates -

Amy Adejokun Section editor

Part of the Viceroy group, which is well-known for the upmarket and contemporary standards of its hotels, the Viceroy Yas Island Hotel is no different. The only 5-star property on the island, the hotel straddles one of Abu Dhabi's main attractions, Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, and has become somewhat of a landmark in the city. Appearing in the distance out of the sand mist, the hotel, with its alien outer shell of purple LED lights, is hard to miss. A stylish hotel that has been decorated with a mixed choice of materials that borders on garish, but which receives full acclaim for its avant-garde architecture and beautiful rooftop bar and pool. An ideal hotel for a young flashy clientele looking to spend a short break centred around the race track.

    Location 1.0 /10

Only a five-minute drive from the airport, the hotel is located on Yas Island right in the middle of the Ferrari World Formula 1 race track. There isn't much else around on the island apart from the Yas Marina just behind the hotel. The authorities were also in the process of building the beach (again), which will be behind Yas Plaza and its various hotels (Media Rotana, Centro by Rotana, Radisson Blu, Park Inn, Staybridge Suites and the Crowne Plaza, which we have also reviewed).

Airport taxi tip: when you arrive at the airport you will need to queue for a taxi. As the journey is extremely short expect most taxi drivers to turn down the run. Either offer to pay a little more than what the meter indicates (offer up to 40 AED in total; which is about £6.00). The taxi usher may also suggest you take a private taxi, which doesn't have a meter - negotiate the price before getting in.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

There are 499 rooms altogether, including 75 suites and 2 presidential suites. We had the privilege of trying out the grand suite and a deluxe room. The grand suite comes in at very generous 154m², which is split up between a master bedroom, large bathroom with freestanding bath tub and separate shower cabin, an enormous living room with a balcony that runs right around it, a kitchen, and guest loo. Although very sleek, we found the white walls and herring bone black marble floors a little too cold to be cosy, but the space and gorgeous bathroom makes up for it.

The deluxe rooms, although less spacious at 54m², are a lot cosier than the grander choices. Dressed in luxurious fabrics and in a palette of natural tones, the room is very pleasant for relaxing after a long day.

All rooms have king size beds (or two twin beds), Wifi access, mini-bar, coffee making facilities (complimentary), large flat television, mood lighting and a safe.

    Overview 8.70 /10

The large alien structure, lit with purple strobe lighting at nightfall, gets top marks for originality. Sat right in the middle of the Ferrari World Formula 1 race track, it is one of those attractions not to miss in Abu Dhabi (either way, you will probably end up here as it is likely that you will be at a loss for things to see and do). Stepping inside is like stepping into a spaceship of netted white marble. The freeform building's organic curves are contrasted with the hard white interiors.

The lobby floor spreads from the cosy reception area through a corridor lined by the hotel restaurants, giving the building a shopping centre atmosphere. The choice of restaurants and bars - 12 in total - is rare to find at any one hotel in the city apart from maybe Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.

In terms of wellbeing, there is a beautiful spa of the British ESPA brand, a gym, and a rooftop pool set on a very stylish deck.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

In total, there are 12 restaurants and bars. The all-day restaurant, Origins, serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and Friday brunch; it is also here that guests take breakfast. Open for dinner only is Nautilus with a view of Yas Marina across the water, and Atayeb, the Arabic restaurant located on the rooftop. Atayeb has a terrace from which one can see a large part of the building and its unusual shape. Open both for lunch and dinner, Kazu is the Japanese option, serving up mainly sushi and sashimi. To sample a different taste of Asia, there is the Noodle Box serving Indonesian curries like the Nasi Goreng to Chinese Dim Sum specialities. Also open for lunch and dinner is the Mediterranean Amici and Angar, the Indian restaurant. There is also 24 hours room service for guests wanting to remain within the privacy of their own room.

The hotel's four bars are worth checking out, especially Skylight, the rooftop bar. Set under the LED canopy of the hotel, the bar is a firm favourite in the city. The Rush bar was set up to be one of the city's top spots to party and it is open Fridays and Saturdays until 3:30am. The two pool bars, Latitude and Longitude, are open throughout the day for drinks and snacks. The last outlet is the café lounge in the reception area.

    Spa 8.7 /10

The 1,400m² spa is hushed and moody and with a tint of delicious smelling essential oils, it is a popular place to come for the locals to relax. There are nine treatment rooms, a gym that is open 24 hours, two rooftop pools and a steam room. The part of the spa that we liked best was the light therapy bed dome in the relaxation area - a great little nook to get some well-deserved shut-eye after a treatment.

    Beach

Although the hotel is on an island, Yas Island, there are no beaches here yet. While we visited, the authorities were trying to build a beach to line the golf course just behind the Crowne Plaza Hotel, but having failed once before, Yas Island may have to wait a while longer before it can get its own beach!

    To know

The hotel was originally built to be unbranded - as the Ferrari World hotel. As the owner has also bought the rest of the island, he has ruled that the Yas Viceroy is to the be the only five-star hotel on the island. This explains why there are few luxury brand hotels on Yas and why the hotel design is quite different to the usual Viceroy look.

For guests with restricted movement, there are also rooms that have been adapted.

The Shangri-La Abu Dhabi is a brand new establishment that will make others pale with envy. Its view of the distant mosque is an absolute spectacle. The resort itself is huge and luxurious in its every detail and in the many facilities it has on offer. The service is outstanding too. The interior decor and layout are a feast for the eyes, as they mix modern designer elements with traditional Arabic touches. The spa, restaurants, main swimming pool, 2000-ft canal and bars make for an exceptional and restful hotel.

The Centro Yas Island by Rotana, is a three-star hotel that is excellent value for money for visitors on a budget; it is one of our favourite low-budget options in the city. The Yas Island hotel is an ideal place to stay if you don't want to overspend on accommodation while in the city.

The Park Inn is a very good three-star hotel around the Yas Island Plaza. It is a great option for travellers on a budget as the rooms are reasonably priced and are comfortable. Part of the Rezidor Group, the hotel isn't a luxury establishment, but it does have the advantage of being right next door to its sister hotel, the Radisson Blu, where guests can also use the facilities. While the hotel isn't the reason come on holiday here, it is a good base to explore the rest of the city from.

The Radisson Blu Hotel is located on Yas Island five minutes from the airport. Although the hotel isn't anything fancy, it is comfortable and has an excellent Italian restaurant and spa. The hotel also has one of the most pleasant views in the city; built right on the edge of the island, it is bordered by a green undulating golf course, and the sea (although there is no beach), adding to the idyllic setting of the hotel. Despite the simple décor of the hotel, there is a real holiday atmosphere due to its sea front location, which we liked very much. The hotel is a pleasant one to be based at as it is far away from the bustle of the gleaming city centre but close enough to drive to the city's attractions. A hotel that is suitable for a wide-ranging clientele from golfers to families and couples.

The main difference between the hotels on the Yas Island Plaza, is the view. While some have a plaza or Formula One race track view, the others have a sea view, which puts a completely different spin on your stay. The Crowne Plaza sits in prime location for sea views. There is no beach on Yas Island (yet), but there is a beautiful golf course that lines the water, again, reinforcing that holiday atmosphere. The hotel is ideal for a wide-ranging clientele, from couples to families, groups and guests on business.

Staybridge Suites, part of the Intercontinental Hotels Group, is located ion Yas Island close to the airport and is right next to its sister hotel, the Crowne Plaza (also reviewed by us). As our hosts repeated a good many times, the Staybridge concept is completely different to that of other hotels; the objective is to create a self-service homely atmosphere at each property. The hotel is an all-suite hotel, and although the décor is a little generic for our taste, Staybridge Suites is a good base to explore the city from for families on a small budget and in need of a spacious room.

For wellbeing aficionados, The Westin concept, 'Prestige Project', has finally arrived in Abu Dhabi. The brand's first hotel in the Emirates, it is set between the airport and the main convention centre close to the enormous Abu Dhabi golf course. The hotel is extremely pleasant and well appointed, which is just as well, as apart from golf, there isn't much else to do in the surroundings. With the hotel's focus on 'super foods', natural materials and colour schemes, and a picturesque backdrop of rolling greens, the hotel is more of a retreat than a resort. The Westin is ideal for a wide range of guests, from families to couples.

Whether you want to arrive by boat or by helicopter, the Palace caters for it. One of the most expensive hotels ever built, and originally built as a palace for the Sheikh, The Emirates Palace, run by Kempinski, is the place to see and be seen when in Abu Dhabi. Smack-bang in the middle of a busy intersection, the hotel with its domed ceiling and turrets, is an impressive fortress. The enormous lobbies remind of Kubrick dimensions with a smattering of Middle Eastern luxe. The hotel is more of a tourist attraction than a cosy haven away from the hustle and bustle of the city. If you like your upmarket facilities and your cappuccino sprinkled with real gold, then this is the place. The hotel attracts a wide-ranging clientele, from celebrities and families with young children, to couples on a romantic getaway.

The Jumeirah Hotel Etihad Towers is one of those hotels discreetly hidden inside one of the city's numerous towers. Once you've actually found the hotel bit - because it's a bit of a maze in there if you come in a different way to the actual hotel entrance - it's all sweeping spaces modelled on something that looks like a lavish, slightly overdone, Shining film set. An enormous tower of luxe, very masculine lines, straight edges, angular, lots of black and white, the Jumeirah is one of those hotels that one learns to love due to the high quality finish and upmarket facilities. Although the hotel has a great pool at the back of the hotel, it isn't really one for the kids - a hotel more for business, and there are still few leisure guests.
