If you are looking for a good family hotel where all ages can have a good time then the Beach Albatros is one place you might have to consider. Pretty close to the beach being one of the front row of hotels, it is a relatively large complex with everything you need for a successful holiday. The rooms, of which there is only one category, are fairly well appointed although could be bigger, the outdoor spaces are animated and convivial and the standard of food is above average for Agadir. In addition to the entertainment for the little ones, the adults can take advantage of the decent spa facility and for party-goers the biggest nightclub in the town will soon be open. The Beach Albatros is a good value property where your needs, if not too high, will be met.

    Location 5.0 /10

This large complex is towards the northern end of the Agadir bay and is very close to the beach with just the pedestrian zone to cross in order to reach the sea. The hotel is also very close to the main drag and to the tourist centre with a range of shops, restaurants and bars to choose from should you wish to leave the complex. The airport is around half an hour away by taxi and will cost you about 200MAD.

    Accommodation 6.70 /10

There is only one category of room at the Beach Albatros and they are all either twin or double rooms, so if you are travelling as a family you will need to take two rooms. They are all appointed in a similar fashion with hardwood floors, matching furniture (chest of draw, wall mirror, bedside tables) and a glass-topped occasional table and chairs. Each bed has an orange bed skirt and is dressed in good quality linens with a bathrobe and slippers folded up at its foot. Amenities include a flatscreen television, telephone, opening hanging space with safe and air conditioning. The balcony off of the room is not huge but is large enough to sit out comfortably gazing at the view of the pool/gardens/ocean. The bathrooms are pretty standard in their appearance with a marble vanity, bathtub with shower, bidet, hairdryer and toiletries in both dispensers as well as small presentation bottles. The towel art and the dispersed rose petals are meant to be a nice touch but we are not at all fans!

    Overview 6.70 /10

The exterior of the Beach Albatros is typical of club hotel in that it is white-washed and displays a mosaic of balconies along each side of the building. The busy lobby (both in terms of décor and flow of people) features a zigzag reception desk with attractive Moroccan tiling and a gold and black stripped floor. Adjacent to the hall is a bright, spacious seating area/lobby bar with a series of white chesterfield couches and chunky wooden coffee tables where guests can relax throughout the day and take a break from being in the sun. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of this area is the pool area. Boasting two large swimming pools, one of which has a kid's pool and jacuzzi, the zone has plenty of loungers and parasols to go round, although they are a little closely packed. There is good exposure all around the pool area and some great views towards one end of the Atlantic, especially from the separate terrace slightly removed from the pools. If you fancy a bit to eat or need some liquid refreshment that you can head to the snack bar for something light to nosh on. Throughout the day the hotel's animation team entertainment kids and adults alike with a host of activities such as aquagym, water polo, darts, football and many other fun events. Much of the animation is conducted in French although the animators do speak English. For the smallest of kids there is a miniclub with specially trained staff who will play with the toddlers during the day. There is also some entertainment in the evening with a minidisco for the kids and a music duo (lobby) show (outside in the summer months) and dancing for the adults whose theme changes on a daily basis. The hotel will soon have not only the town's biggest night club on its premises but also an area

For those looking to pamper themselves during their stay, head to the hotel's spa, which, while is not the best looking one by a long shot, does have decent facilities: sauna, jacuzzi, male and female hammams, six massage rooms and an indoor heated pool. The staff offers a wide range of treatments including massages, complete body treatments, facials, manicures and pedicures and there is also a hair salon. If you want to continue your fitness regime while away you can thanks to the gym which has some modern cardio and weights machines as well as a great coastal view.

The overall state of the hotel is excellent and we found it to be clean and tidy and in good repair. The staff we came across was pleasant and helpful and all members of the team speak English. Finding one's way round the hotel is pretty simple and access to the rooms is no trouble at all, with several elevators serving all floors. There is complimentary wifi throughout the hotel as well as a business centre (30MAD for half an hour).

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The Beach Albatros has two options for eating besides the swimming pool snack bar. The first of these is the buffet restaurant which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and is located off of the lobby bar and just in front of the swimming pool. Smarter and just more agreable than most other buffet restaurants in similar hotels, the space is large, bright and the tables are not on top of each other as they are elsewhere. The food is of a relatively high standard and there is a good choice at every meal. The afternoon and evening buffets run on a one-week cycle and there are often themes too.

The other option, for dinner only, it the hotel's Moroccan restaurant Tajine. Much smarter than the main restaurant, it features large, cushioned sofas in traditional upholstery, carved wooden columns and framed scenes from the desert on the walls. Guests staying at the hotel on an all-inclusive basis have the chance to eat at the restaurant for free once during the duration of their stay but must reserve in advance. Those guests staying on any other basis will have to pay extra to eat here but it may be wise to do so if you are staying for longer than a week otherwise you risk being faced with the same menu at the main restaurant during the second week of the your stay.

    Spa 6.7 /10

The Spa is in a building facing the ocean. There is a hairdresser and a manicure-pedicure salon. Access to the gym is completely free. Moreover, the gym offers a beautiful view of the Atlantic Ocean. Ideal for a bit of sport. The hammam, the sauna and the massages are all charged extra. The decor is Oriental but with little detail. The few wrought iron lamps and the ochre walls are not enough to give the place a real ambiance.

    Beach 7.45 /10

Guests at the hotel have the luxury of being pretty much on the sea front and have only the pedestrianised area of the main drag to cross to reach the water. The beach itself is perfect for all the family with fine sand, calm waters and winds and nothing of danger hiding in the clear waters. Those who wish to practice watersports will find several operators in the area. Fancy a bite to eat. You will find plenty of places to chow down and drink close to the beach as well as a bunch of shops.

    To know

The hotel, which welcomes many German and UK tourists, has 10 rooms adapted for those guests in a wheelchair. During our visit work was well under way on what was to become Agadir's largest nightclub and was due t open in the first half of 2013.

There is no doubt that the Atlantic Palace is one of only a handful of hotels in Agadir to be truly of an international standard. Of an impressive scale, the hotel boasts smart, spacious rooms and suites, well kept and pleasant public spaces, a wellness centre worthy of the name and a good choice of quality eating concessions. The décor and design is head and shoulders above most other properties as is the staff and of course the location, being situated just across the road from the beachfront. Whether travelling as a couple, family or group of friends, if it is quality you are after then few places can top the Atlantic Palace - it should definitely be in your short list.

The Tafoukt, (the Berber sun), is a very pleasant hotel club offering all-inclusive service, located on the seafront and close to the bustle of the city. The quality of almost all of the rooms that have been renovated is worth noting, as well as the designer decor of several common areas. Of a human size, the club will be particularly suitable for those who enjoy basking in the sun and lively nightlife.

It may have all the facilities and amenities for the complete family holiday, but you cannot get away from the fact that the Anezi is pretty drab and poorly located. With a mix of regular hotel guestrooms and self-catering apartments, the complex also has several swimming pools, a full animation and entertainment programme and fitness and wellness facilities. It is also fair to say that the hotel is ageing quite badly and that there is a distinct lack of atmosphere around the place. There is nothing wrong though, per se, about the Anezi, so if you are looking for somewhere simple to stay and do not mind too much about the sad décor and ambiance then there are probably, no definitely, worse places to spend a week or two.

With the exception of the two Sofitel properties, the Royal Atlas Agadir is the classiest joint in town (that we have seen anyway). The whole place is meticulously kept and with beautiful décor and interior design throughout. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, it has the best looking spa in the town, its public spaces are immaculate and the eating options are top notch. As if that was not enough, it is also located right on the beach and is not too far away from the tourist centre. There is no full animation programme so the Royal Atlas is more suitable for couples and friends, although children are of course welcome and are catered for. This is one of the few places really worth staying in.

The rooms are very spacious and well appointed, the décor is in good taste, the food is reasonable, the staff personable and the spa, unlike so many of its neighbours', actually resembles a spa. The hotel is also fairly quiet and intimate and is a place that one may well choose to relax in rather than head out to the beach or the town. The Timoulay certainly gets our seal of approval!

This is by far and away the best hotel in Agadir. It is the only world class property in the resort and it beats every other hotel hands down in pretty much every way, from the design to the service and from the dining to the wellness facilities. Its beachfront location, away from the tacky tourist centre of Agadir, makes it the only place to consider for a truly relaxing luxury holiday. One could reproach the hotel for the size of its standard rooms, but they are immaculately appointed and both comfortable and functional. Also perfect are the hotel's grounds and public spaces which means that you probably will not have the remotest desire t to leave this heavenly complex. Although children are welcome at the Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, the property is more suited for couples.

The older of the two Sofitels in Agadir, the Royalbay is, together with its sister hotel, head and shoulders above all other hotels in the resort in pretty well every aspect. With the exception of the newer of the pair of French properties, the Royalbay's architecture and design is unparalleled as is the standard of the service, food and facilities. The guestrooms are spacious and extremely well appointed, the public spaces are impeccably maintained and you will not find a smarter kids club anywhere. As well as enjoying a beachfront location the hotel also boasts a quiet spot along the bay, away from the chaos of the tourist centre. The one thing we were surprised about is the lack of privacy on the terraces and balconies of the rooms, especially the most expensive.
