Hotel Club Almoggar Garden Beach Hotel 3 star

Boulevard Mohamed v Agadir, Morocco
Amy Adejokun Section editor

A club hotel par excellence, the Almoggar is a large full-service family hotel right on the Agadir beachfront. The rooms are apartment-like in style and are basic but functional while the large public areas are pleasant to be in. There is a full animation programme for both adults and kids and thanks to its height there are some good oceans views to be had from the hotel. Food is not one of the strong points at the Almoggar but given the hotel's rates this should not be a surprise. We are sure though that children will enjoy their stay here which will in turn please the parents!

    Location 6.0 /10

The Almoggar is right at the northern end of the bay in Agadir but is still close to the tourist centre and the many restaurants, bars and shops along the main drag. The hotel is located right on the beach and guests only have to cross a pedestrianised walkway to reach the sand. Agadir's airport is just thirty minutes away by taxi and the ride should cost you in the neighbourhood of 200MAD.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

There are a total of 400 apartment-style guestrooms at the Almoggar which can accommodate either two, three or four people. The size of the room does not alter hugely along with the maximum occupancy so any more than a couple of people and the space suddenly becomes quite tight. The basic rooms have a double bed on one side of a short (in height and length) dividing wall while over the other side is a small seating area or sleeping space with one of two single beds. There is plenty of wardrobe space and the only other furniture aside from the bedside tables is a coiffeuse. On the peach-coloured walls hang a couple of tiny paintings as well as some Moroccan style lamps. Amenities are basic and include a colour television, telephone, safe (25MAD per day) and air conditioning. Every room has either a balcony or terrace although some have no view at all, looking onto the building opposite - others look onto the hotel's grounds and pool. The bathrooms are tiled in terracotta and have a bathtub/shower combination, bidet, separate toilet and simple toiletries. Some of them are not in great condition with chipped fittings and black stains on the wall.

    Overview 7.40 /10

It is difficult to gauge the size of the hotel simply from its exterior as the entrance is relatively small. But once in the vast lobby you will start to get some idea of the scale of the place as it unfolds before your eyes and drops down all the way to the beach. The marble-clad entrance hall gives a nod to Moroccan architecture and décor with its columns, arches and rugs and has a huge seating area at its centre. Far more interesting though is the terrace at the back of the lobby which looks over the entire property and has views of the ocean beyond. Also on the lobby level is the well equipped room used for the evening's show as well as the mini disco and regular disco for adults each night. The show changes every day and has a theme each time such as oriental dance or papagayo while on occasion the animation team will be dressed up in costumes all day along a similar theme whilst they go about providing entertainment for all the family. Activities include tennis, ping pong, fashion shows, water polo, beach volley ball and other sports and games. The hotel also has a mini club but this was under renovation during our visit.

Much of the animation takes place around the main swimming pool which has good exposure and its own snack bar where food and drink cravings between meals can be met. There is heaps of space around the pool with plenty of sun loungers and parasols although if you are looking for peace and quiet you may want to grab a spot around the hotel's second pool as there is often loud music pumping out across the main one. The second pool is far calmer and has just as much exposure to the sun with plenty of space too. There is also a kid's pool here which the main pool lacks. Just adjacent to this swimming pool are very worn out tennis courts and football/basketball terrains.

The hotel does have a wellness centre although it is by no means a destination spa and is very basic and void of any real ambiance. It comprises three treatment rooms, another for esthetics and a relaxation area. The equipment used in the spa is fairly simple and the products used are not from recognised brands. There is a fitness centre too at the hotel whose machines are of reasonable quality and you should find everything you need for a complete workout. Motivation is provided by the ocean views.

    Food and drink 6.30 /10

The hotel's main restaurant is housed in a large room mostly devoid of any character aside, luckily, from the view over the resort itself and of the ocean. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served here and the afternoon and evenings meals run on a one-week cycle which means if you stay for over seven days you may well be eating the same thing twice. Whilst we did not get the chance to sample the buffet during our visit, it must be said that what was on offer did not look wholly appetising. For a change from the all-you-can-eat formula there are a couple of other options available. The first of these is an Italian eatery which gives directly onto the pedestrianised promenade that separates the hotel from the beach. With seating both inside and on a terrace the restaurant also has large flatscreen televisions showing sporting events. On offer here are salads, omelettes, paninis, meat and fish dishes as well of course as pastas and pizzas. The other option is the hotel's typical Moroccan restaurant, although this was closed for renovation during our visit. It should be re-open for the 2013 high season. Should you have any cravings during the day between your meals then you can always grab something light from the swimming pool's snack bar which is open right through the day.

    Beach 7.20 /10

The Almoggar has the big advantage of being right on the beach with just a promenade to cross before setting foot on the sand. The beach itself is extremely wide, has good quality sand and both the waters (clear and safe) and wind are very calm at all times. As well as several providers of watersports activities there are a host of restaurants and bars and shops close by should you need anything during the day.

There is no doubt that the Atlantic Palace is one of only a handful of hotels in Agadir to be truly of an international standard. Of an impressive scale, the hotel boasts smart, spacious rooms and suites, well kept and pleasant public spaces, a wellness centre worthy of the name and a good choice of quality eating concessions. The décor and design is head and shoulders above most other properties as is the staff and of course the location, being situated just across the road from the beachfront. Whether travelling as a couple, family or group of friends, if it is quality you are after then few places can top the Atlantic Palace - it should definitely be in your short list.

The Adrar Hotel is an ageing structure without the slightest pretension. However, as a guest you will feel at home here. The good will of the staff probably plays an important role in this. The rooms have all been renovated, and really stand out thanks to their bright colours. Touches of very kitsch decoration give the hotel a unique and unusual character.

Without a doubt the best of the second row of hotels in Agadir, the Timoulay is a very pleasant hotel indeed, suitable for couples, small families or even groups of friends looking for value for money but not necessarily worried about being right on the beach. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed, the décor is in good taste, the food is reasonable, the staff personable and the spa, unlike so many of its neighbours', actually resembles a spa. The hotel is also fairly quiet and intimate and is a place that one may well choose to relax in rather than head out to the beach or the town. The Timoulay certainly gets our seal of approval!

The Agyad is, we are sorry to say, a member of that group of hotels found just behind the first row of properties along the Agadir coastline which are run down, depressing and soulless. The place is literally surrounded by rumbled filled wastelands and building sites and there is nothing of interest anywhere close to the hotel. The apartments are spacious and some have good views but they are in poor condition and in some cases dirty with loose wires hanging out from the walls. There is little in the way of animation, although this is perhaps to be expected from an aparthotel and the restaurant looks thoroughly unappetising. Unless you are really skint or all other rooms in the city have gone, steer clear.

A small, homely hotel in the town centre of Agadir, the Aferni has something charming about it despite being basic and dated. It lacks the services and entertainment of the larger complexes closer to the coast but if you are looking for a quieter place to stay during your time here then this could be an option. The rooms are fairly bare but may have large bathrooms while it also has a quiet pool area and restaurant and is clean and well kept for the most part. Do not expect grand service and extra touches here and there, but if you want a simple, tranquil place for a night or two then the Aferni is to be considered.

On the fourth floor of the Sud Bahia hotel there are a series of drawings along the corridor. One of them depicts a young Moroccan girl with tears rolling down her face. And quite frankly after having seen this hotel, we fully understand why. Dated, tired and thoroughly depressing, it looks as though nothing has changed here in about thirty years. The lobby of the property tells you everything you need to know. Not only is it a good hike from the beach, but it has poor facilities, balconies so small that you could not relax on them and little to no atmosphere. It is the type of place that you check into when you turn up to a place without a reservation and you have had no luck with any of the other places in town. One to be avoided if at all possible.

The Tildi is an unexceptional family property located in a no man's land part of the resort of Agadir. While the rooms are in decent condition they are pretty uninspiring as are the common areas of the hotel. The most attractive part of the hotel is arguably its swimming pool which is well exposed and enjoys pleasant surroundings. The hotel does have a spa but it is nothing to write home about which is also true for the food, which we found to be extremely mediocre. Not a million miles from the beach and with some soft animation (games, activities, competitions etc), the Tildi might suit a family or couple on a budget who don't feel the need to be at the centre of the action in the town.

This is by far and away the best hotel in Agadir. It is the only world class property in the resort and it beats every other hotel hands down in pretty much every way, from the design to the service and from the dining to the wellness facilities. Its beachfront location, away from the tacky tourist centre of Agadir, makes it the only place to consider for a truly relaxing luxury holiday. One could reproach the hotel for the size of its standard rooms, but they are immaculately appointed and both comfortable and functional. Also perfect are the hotel's grounds and public spaces which means that you probably will not have the remotest desire t to leave this heavenly complex. Although children are welcome at the Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, the property is more suited for couples.

With the exception of the newer of the pair of French properties, the Royalbay's architecture and design is unparalleled as is the standard of the service, food and facilities. The guestrooms are spacious and extremely well appointed, the public spaces are impeccably maintained and you will not find a smarter kids club anywhere.
