Hotel Timoulay Hotel 4 star

Cité Founty F6 Baie des Palmiers - 80000 AGADIR - Maroc - Agadir, Morocco
Amy Adejokun Section editor

Without a doubt the best of the second row of hotels in Agadir, the Timoulay is a very pleasant hotel indeed, suitable for couples, small families or even groups of friends looking for value for money but not necessarily worried about being right on the beach. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed, the décor is in good taste, the food is reasonable, the staff personable and the spa, unlike so many of its neighbours', actually resembles a spa. The hotel is also fairly quiet and intimate and is a place that one may well choose to relax in rather than head out to the beach or the town. The Timoulay certainly gets our seal of approval!

    Location 8.0 /10

The Timoulay is situated back from the front row of hotels, around 500m up a slight incline in a bit of a no man's land. There is nothing at all of interest in the immediate surroundings and there is a building site opposite as well as other large expanses of nothingness. Yet still, its location is not as bad as some of its neighbours. To get to the main drag and to reach some sort of civilisation is quite a walk away so it would probably be best to take a taxi (very inexpensive). If it is just the beach you are interested in however you can just walk straight down the hill and access it that way. A ride in a taxi from the airport should cost around 200MAD and take roughly thirty minutes.

    Accommodation 7.60 /10

Guests at the Timoulay can choose between three categories of room: superior, deluxe and suite. All three are appointed in very similar fashion and there is in fact very little difference between the first two categories of room, only the transition from two single beds to a double bed, smarter linen and a larger balcony or terrace (which represents, in our opinion, quite steep price increase). The rooms are particularly spacious and have a seating corner with a banquette which can be converted into a bed for a third guest. Filled with natural light and also featuring light coloured wooden furniture as well as colourful local art, there is more character in the rooms than in most other places. Amenities include a flatscreen television, telephone, safe, fridge, hairdryer and air conditioning. The bathrooms are equally generous in size and have tubs with shower, personalised toiletries and make-up mirrors. The small roses in water are a nice touch too. All the rooms also have balconies, the superior room ones with table and chairs and the deluxe ones with extra sunbeds. The suites have the same bedrooms as the smaller rooms but also a separate living area with extra bedding and two full bathrooms (one with tub, the other with shower). There is complimentary wifi throughout the hotel.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Compared to its neighbours, the Timoulay has a far more interesting exterior, Moroccan in style, with slit windows and those wonderfully culminating arches at its entrance. The well kept gardens and clean surrounds give a clue as to what one might expect to find inside. The lobby, which is probably the least interesting part of the hotel, is bright and welcoming and has a guest computer, gift shop and is also where the lifts to your room can be found. A neat seating area is just in front of the gallery and staircase which leads down to the bar area (see 'Food and Drink'). Out at the back of the hotel is the little oasis at the centre of which is the hotel's swimming pool. Surrounded on three sides by the hotel itself and on the other by a wall of palms and other plants, the space has plenty of sunbeds and parasols and there is even a stepped section at one end where guests can relax in style on cushioned benches or couches with a drink. It is true to say that the pool does not enjoy the best exposure to the sun because of the close proximity of the buildings but for much of the day there are plenty of rays.

The hotel's spa is one of its strong selling points if only because it is one of the few which actually lives up to its name. The entrance is rather jolly with a welcoming sofa and colourful art while the equipment and facility itself is of a good quality. The massage rooms are not the best decorated we have ever seen but spa also features a sauna, hammam with typical Moroccan tiling, a jet bath, Vichy shower and a relaxation room where tisane is served. The quality of the products used for the treatments (Academie) is in keeping with the standard of the spa and the staff is very likeable. The hotel also has a few fitness machines but we would not go so far as to call it a gym.

Being a simple hotel and not a large club hotel structure just as those on the seafront, the Timoulay has a limited animation programme which consists of live music in the evening in the bar area. For those book worms out amongst you there is a book swap shelf where you can leave your read literature and pick up a new tome.

    Food and drink 6.70 /10

The hotel offers breakfast, lunch and dinner but has no all inclusive offer. The breakfast spread is reasonable with a continental offering (breads and pastries are not great) plus a few hot options (not so appetising) as well as an omelette station (a winner). If the weather is good, which it usually is, then take a seat on the terrace rather than in the dark restaurant and relax against the backdrop of the pool and pleasant gardens. At lunch time you can choose between two menus, depending on whether you are staying on a bed and breakfast or half board basis. The choices though are fairly broad and the service is quick and friendly. In the evening the hotel offers either a hot buffet which runs on a two-week cycle and is themed from time to time or a menu when there are few guests in house.

Adjacent to the restaurant is the hotel's bar which has several different styles of seating area, all of which are comfortable and pleasing to the eye. It is in this space that each night live music takes place although guests are welcome to occupy the bar at any time of the day to relax or have a bite t eat.

    Beach 7.45 /10

The beach is around 500m down the hill from the Timoulay. There is no shuttle bus provided by the hotel so you will have to walk but it should not take more than ten minutes to reach. For the moment there is no private section of the beach for guests of the Timoulay but you should have no problem finding a spot to place your towel and affairs. The beach itself is a calm one with little wind, soft waves and nothing perilous lurking in the waters. For those wishing to do some watersports there are a number of centres around the place who can help you find what you are looking for.

    To know

Not only does the hotel have a couple of rooms adapted for those guests in a wheelchair but there are ramps all around the property to facilitate access to all areas.

There is no doubt that the Atlantic Palace is one of only a handful of hotels in Agadir to be truly of an international standard. Of an impressive scale, the hotel boasts smart, spacious rooms and suites, well kept and pleasant public spaces, a wellness centre worthy of the name and a good choice of quality eating concessions. The décor and design is head and shoulders above most other properties as is the staff and of course the location, being situated just across the road from the beachfront. Whether travelling as a couple, family or group of friends, if it is quality you are after then few places can top the Atlantic Palace - it should definitely be in your short list.

The Tafoukt, (the Berber sun), is a very pleasant hotel club offering all-inclusive service, located on the seafront and close to the bustle of the city. The quality of almost all of the rooms that have been renovated is worth noting, as well as the designer decor of several common areas. Of a human size, the club will be particularly suitable for those who enjoy basking in the sun and lively nightlife.

With the exception of the two Sofitel properties, the Royal Atlas Agadir is the classiest joint in town (that we have seen anyway). The whole place is meticulously kept and with beautiful décor and interior design throughout. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, it has the best looking spa in the town, its public spaces are immaculate and the eating options are top notch. As if that was not enough, it is also located right on the beach and is not too far away from the tourist centre. There is no full animation programme so the Royal Atlas is more suitable for couples and friends, although children are of course welcome and are catered for. This is one of the few places really worth staying in.

The rooms have all been renovated, and really stand out thanks to their bright colours. Touches of very kitsch decoration give the hotel a unique and unusual character.

Pretty close to the beach being one of the front row of hotels, it is a relatively large complex with everything you need for a successful holiday. The rooms, of which there is only one category, are fairly well appointed although could be bigger, the outdoor spaces are animated and convivial and the standard of food is above average for Agadir. In addition to the entertainment for the little ones, the adults can take advantage of the decent spa facility and for party-goers the biggest nightclub in the town will soon be open. The Beach Albatros is a good value property where your needs, if not too high, will be met.

It is the only world class property in the resort and it beats every other hotel hands down in pretty much every way, from the design to the service and from the dining to the wellness facilities. Its beachfront location, away from the tacky tourist centre of Agadir, makes it the only place to consider for a truly relaxing luxury holiday. One could reproach the hotel for the size of its standard rooms, but they are immaculately appointed and both comfortable and functional. Also perfect are the hotel's grounds and public spaces which means that you probably will not have the remotest desire t to leave this heavenly complex. Although children are welcome at the Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, the property is more suited for couples.

With the exception of the newer of the pair of French properties, the Royalbay's architecture and design is unparalleled as is the standard of the service, food and facilities. The guestrooms are spacious and extremely well appointed, the public spaces are impeccably maintained and you will not find a smarter kids club anywhere.
