Hotel Residence Intouriste Hotel 3 star

The Intouriste is another one in a long line of nondescript hotels with next to no ambiance, sad, tired décor and lost amongst the building sites and wastelands of the second row of hotels along the Agadir coastline. The rooms, apartments and studios are spacious and clean, but are basic and devoid of charm while there is virtually nothing at all in the immediate vicinity of the property. It does have the advantage of having a small spa, but it is really nothing to speak of. There is some form of entertainment at the hotel, but this is not the place to come if you are looking for full on animation all day long. A reasonable choice if you are looking for self-catering as a family or group of friends.

    Location 9.42 /10

The Intouriste is surrounded by other grim aparthotels as well as building sites and empty patches of land waiting to be filled with similar unsightly accommodations. It is situated around fifteen minutes from the beach and there are no services whatsoever close to the property; for these you will have to head to the town centre or seafront. A taxi to the airport will cost in the region of 200MAD and will take around half an hour.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The accommodation at the Intouriste is a mix of guestrooms studios and apartments. All are very spacious and have balconies or terraces (although these are not very private) with the two larger types of room being equipped with full kitchens for those staying on a self-catering basis. The fairly bare standard rooms have just twin or double beds plus an extra bed in the form of a sofa integrated into the wall. To one side of the bed is a small coiffeuse while pretty much the only other feature of the room besides the wardrobe (in which you will find a safe for which the hotel charge 35MAD a day) is the flatscreen television. There is a small balcony off the room with a partial sea view, but this is ruined by the buildings and wastelands in the foreground. The bathrooms, which are of a reasonable size, feature a shower, marble vanity and large mirror although few toiletries are on offer and there is just a soap dispenser in he shower. The larger studios and apartments are similarly appointed, but have space for two or four more guests as well as a living space and a kitchenette. The balconies in these rooms tend also to be bigger. Unfortunately none of the rooms are accessible to those guests in wheelchairs.

    Overview 6.70 /10

The vast, dark and characterless lobby of the Intouriste is no different to many an Agadir entrance hall. Yes there are some nice examples of Moroccan furniture and ornaments as well as some greenery but it is just so dull in there that one does not appreciate all this. The staff we came across was pleasant enough but perhaps think a little too much of their hotel and should probably go and visit some others for a reality check.

The outdoor swimming pool, it must be said, is surrounded by some beautiful plants and trees in a stark contrast to the interiors, however, the sight of the nearby buildings and the noise from the roads outside go some way to undoing this. Both loungers and parasols are provided and there is a small section of the pool given over to kids. Exposure to the sun throughout the day is pretty good and there is a snack bar poolside to satisfy those midday cravings. As well as the external pool, the small wellness centre possesses a small indoor one in addition to a sauna, massage room and beauty centre.

Overall the hotel is in pretty good condition and the rooms are easily accessible via the stairs or one of the lifts. The corridors are wide, well lit and clean and everything in the hotel is within easy reach. There is complimentary wifi in the hotel's lobby and a boutique selling local souvenirs and supplies that you may have forgotten at home.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

The majority of people who stay at the Intouriste do so on a self-catering basis. This, in part, explains why the hotel only offers dinner and no other meal. It is served as an à la carte option and is available upon request. For all of your other dining needs you will have to head into the town centre or close to the seafront where you will find a plethora of restaurants serving all different kinds of cuisine, although the quality varies so try and get recommendations. Otherwise, the hotel has two bars on its ground floor: the lobby bar and the Taj bar, which is more for non-residents. The former is where from time to time, and depending on occupancy, there is some form of entertainment aside from the nightly live music. The space is nothing to write home about with little in the way of décor or atmosphere. The latter, similarly, is unremarkable and also features some forms of entertainment now and again.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The Intouriste is at least a 10 minute walk to the beach as it is situated behind the first row of hotels. If you are thinking of heading down in the middle of the day consider getting a taxi as the temperatures can be extremely high. Once there, you will find a private section reserved for guests of the hotel equipped with sun loungers and parasols. But if there is no space left do not worry as the beach is large enough for you to find a spot elsewhere. Boasting fine sand, clear water and little wind, the beach is a calm place to swim and enjoy games in full safety. You will also find many a bar and café along the front wt which to eat and drink whenever you feel like it.

    To know

The Intouriste is an aparthotel and so most of its guests stay here on a self-catering basis. That said, it is possible to have dinner at the hotel and this takes the form of an à la carte menu. The hotel is particularly popular with Irish travellers.

Aside from the fact that this hotel is well located in terms of the beach and the town centre and that its grounds are kept pleasant, it is pretty much impossible to be positive about the Almohades. The rooms are depressing, there seems never to be a moment's peace and quite, the service leaves a lot to be desired and the food is, to put it bluntly, terrible. Around two thirds of the rooms are set aside for clients of a French tour operator and from the way they behave you would think they had never been on holiday before. What's more, the animation here is almost exclusively in French so not really suitable for British guests. So, unless you really have no other option and you simply want to lie on the beach all day every day, we suggest you look elsewhere.

With the exception of the two Sofitel properties, the Royal Atlas Agadir is the classiest joint in town (that we have seen anyway). The whole place is meticulously kept and with beautiful décor and interior design throughout. The rooms are spacious and well appointed, it has the best looking spa in the town, its public spaces are immaculate and the eating options are top notch. As if that was not enough, it is also located right on the beach and is not too far away from the tourist centre. There is no full animation programme so the Royal Atlas is more suitable for couples and friends, although children are of course welcome and are catered for. This is one of the few places really worth staying in.

This is by far and away the best hotel in Agadir. It is the only world class property in the resort and it beats every other hotel hands down in pretty much every way, from the design to the service and from the dining to the wellness facilities. Its beachfront location, away from the tacky tourist centre of Agadir, makes it the only place to consider for a truly relaxing luxury holiday. One could reproach the hotel for the size of its standard rooms, but they are immaculately appointed and both comfortable and functional. Also perfect are the hotel's grounds and public spaces which means that you probably will not have the remotest desire t to leave this heavenly complex. Although children are welcome at the Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, the property is more suited for couples.

The older of the two Sofitels in Agadir, the Royalbay is, together with its sister hotel, head and shoulders above all other hotels in the resort in pretty well every aspect. With the exception of the newer of the pair of French properties, the Royalbay's architecture and design is unparalleled as is the standard of the service, food and facilities. The guestrooms are spacious and extremely well appointed, the public spaces are impeccably maintained and you will not find a smarter kids club anywhere. As well as enjoying a beachfront location the hotel also boasts a quiet spot along the bay, away from the chaos of the tourist centre. The one thing we were surprised about is the lack of privacy on the terraces and balconies of the rooms, especially the most expensive.

There is no doubt that the Atlantic Palace is one of only a handful of hotels in Agadir to be truly of an international standard. Of an impressive scale, the hotel boasts smart, spacious rooms and suites, well kept and pleasant public spaces, a wellness centre worthy of the name and a good choice of quality eating concessions. The décor and design is head and shoulders above most other properties as is the staff and of course the location, being situated just across the road from the beachfront. Whether travelling as a couple, family or group of friends, if it is quality you are after then few places can top the Atlantic Palace - it should definitely be in your short list.

Without a doubt the best of the second row of hotels in Agadir, the Timoulay is a very pleasant hotel indeed, suitable for couples, small families or even groups of friends looking for value for money but not necessarily worried about being right on the beach. The rooms are very spacious and well appointed, the décor is in good taste, the food is reasonable, the staff personable and the spa, unlike so many of its neighbours', actually resembles a spa. The hotel is also fairly quiet and intimate and is a place that one may well choose to relax in rather than head out to the beach or the town. The Timoulay certainly gets our seal of approval!
