This is by far and away the best hotel in Agadir. It is the only world class property in the resort and it beats every other hotel hands down in pretty much every way, from the design to the service and from the dining to the wellness facilities. Its beachfront location, away from the tacky tourist centre of Agadir, makes it the only place to consider for a truly relaxing luxury holiday. One could reproach the hotel for the size of its standard rooms, but they are immaculately appointed and both comfortable and functional. Also perfect are the hotel's grounds and public spaces which means that you probably will not have the remotest desire t to leave this heavenly complex. Although children are welcome at the Sofitel Agadir Thalassa Sea and Spa, the property is more suited for couples.

    Location 7.0 /10

Located right at the southern end of the bay in Agadir, the Sofitel has a beachfront location some distance away from the main drag and the nerve centre of the resort. Some may find this an inconvenience, however, the resort is of such a high quality and has such good facilities that quite frankly there is no need to go into town unless you particularly need to. The airport is around a half an hour's drive from the hotel and the journey should cost in the region of 200MAD.

    Accommodation 9.40 /10

The one hundred and seventy three rooms at the Thalassa Sea and Spa are comprised of several types of guestroom and various categories of suites. The standard rooms are surprisingly small for a hotel of this standing, but they are appointed beautifully and have three distinct spaces. The first of these is the intimate bathroom which on one side has a fountain style marble wash basin surrounded by a huge mirror and back light make-up mirror, hairdryer and l'Occitane products and on the other side has a walk-in monsoon shower with chromotherapy lighting and more toiletries. On the other side of the bathroom is the bedroom with a king size 'MyBed' dressed in high quality linens and with a colourful plaid and suede cushions. Either side is bendy reading lights while at the foot of the bed is a butler and an occasional table. In one corner is an angular arm chair with foot rest and opposite is a flatscreen television, the minibar (soft drinks complimentary), tea and coffee facilities and complimentary water. The third space is the outdoor one - a spacious terrace with comfortable seating and footrests, a table and Moroccan lamps. Just by the room's entrance is the separate loo and walk-in closet in which you will find the safe, robes and slippers.

If you need a little more space then consider taking either a luxury room with a living space separated by a curtain or a junior suite. This latter has a completely separate salon with luxury furniture and fittings as well as flatscreen television, DVD player, BOSE entertainment system, Nespresso machine, flowers and complimentary French and Moroccan snacks. The bathroom boasts a double vanity, oversize walk-in shower, a bathtub for two and Hermès toiletries while the spacious balcony has outdoor furniture and views of the pool and ocean. Larger suites are also available upon request.

    Overview 9.30 /10

The Arabo-Andalusian style hotel is preceded by a one hundred metre-long water feature flanked by a total of two thousand five hundred rose bushes, creating quite the entrance. But this is nothing compared to the sumptuous lobby awaiting just inside the glass doors. Almost entirely decked out in black and white, the square space has at its centre another water feature (very much a leitmotiv around the hotel) in the form of nine oversize eggs which are meant to represent the nine sources. Surrounding the fountain are four arched walls through which one passes to enter and leave the lobby but also to reach the studded leather reception desk and the seating area. This latter features thick black and white rugs, beautiful white leather wing back chairs and sofas whose sides seem to peel away slightly from the backs. It is here where the check-in is conducted by the superb members of staff who presents you with a welcome tea and beautifully crafted snacks upon arrival. There is also an area at the end of the space where guests can smoke shisha in the evening while another niche is given over to reading, with newspapers and coffee table books available to flick through. This is the kind of lobby that we'd expect to see in some of the best boutique hotels in the biggest cities in the world.

Once registration is done with, you will then be lead out of the reception area along a path through waters and bamboo to the main building housing the rooms, restaurants and wellness centre. You will see quite a few art pieces and funky design features and the public spaces are a pleasure to be in and walk around. But it is of course outside where you will be spending most of your time. The swimming pool area is magnificent with perfectly trimmed hedges lining immaculate lawns and palms swaying above. The stone that surrounds the pool is kept impressively clean and on it stand plenty of stylish sun loungers and parasols along with Moroccan lamps and outdoor furniture such as day beds, sofas and cabanas. Towels are all ready for guests when they arrive at the pool and there are even pool butlers at your service to fetch drinks and anything else you may need. Just beyond the pool space is the beach to which guests have direct access and of course a private area just for themselves.

Although the Thalassa Sea and Spa has no on-site kids club, children staying here can use the fantastic facilities over at the Sofitel Royalbay. There is complimentary wifi throughout the hotel.

    Food and drink 9.20 /10

Market is the hotel's main restaurant and serves breakfast and dinner daily in the form of a buffet. Inspired by the Djemaa el Fna, it would not look out of place in one of the world's main cities: communal tables, design chairs, flowers and oversize vases are just some of the funky design features of the space. There is also a terrace which is extremely pleasant to occupy either in the morning or at night. The breakfast buffet is quite the spread with a large choice of fruits, yoghurts, breads, pastries, cheeses and cold meats as well as the components of a hot breakfast such as sausages and eggs, which can be prepared at the omelette station. Dinner is just as impressive with a appetising selection of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes couscous, tajines and wonderful desserts. The service is top notch although we did find it a little tricky to see what was on our plate when sitting on the terrace.

The Palais du Jardin is the hotel's haute cuisine restaurant. The room itself is stunning with a glass mirror at the centre of the ceiling, a chandelier and immaculately dressed tables with gold edged crockery and a fine silver service. As you enter you will notice the four huge frames on the back wall within which are shelves with plants placed on them. The style of cuisine served here is 'farm to fork' meaning that the ingredients are sourced directly from suppliers. They concept here is based on the four 's': saisonalité (seasonality); simplicité (simplicity); saveur (taste); and santé (health). There are a total of sixty covers which includes a private dining room where the wine is stored.

The third dining option is L'Atlantique, a fish and seafood eatery at the swimming pool with views of the bay. Open at lunchtime and in the evening, it serves grilled dishes and has a light, fresh feel to it with a mezzanine terrace. It is also open to non-residents.

The hotel also has a stylish bar in the main building called Le Medicine Bar which focuses on serving healthy, rejuvenating drinks throughout the day such as fresh fruit smoothies and teas.

    Spa 7.7 /10

The hotel boasts a fully equipped thalassotherapy centre and spa with every possible treatment you could imagine. The facility is run and managed by Sofitel and all the products used in the treatments are their own brand. The staff here, who welcomes you like nowhere else, was the first team in the entire hotel to be employed, such is the importance placed on this side of the hotel. There is a small boutique at the entrance to the spa where guests can purchase beauty products as well as other accessories. The whole place is contemporarily designed and is clean, sleek and, most importantly, relaxing. There are a total of sixteen treatment cabins as well as a spa suite for two people which can be taken for half a day and comprises a hammam, jacuzzi, private terrace, television and private access to the beach. The two heated sea water swimming pools, one outdoor and one in, are used for treatments (jet massage/counter current swimming) and classes (aquagym/fitness) while other hydro treatments include Vichy showers and jet massage baths. There are of course dry treatments too such as wraps and there were plans for a Dessange beauty salon and hairdresser which should be open in early 2013. In a separate part of the centre is a hammam universe comprising a steam room, four exfoliation rooms, a fresh water pool for taking a tisane, heated alcoves and a private relaxation room. No more than two people are allowed in this section at a time meaning that you and your partner can enjoy the utmost privacy. Other features include a hot stone passage, good for circulation, and a host of classes as well as free yoga! A fitness centre is adjoined to the thalasso centre and is equipped with all the latest machines for a complete workout. Personal trainers are available on request.

    Beach 8.70 /10

The Thalassa Sea & Spa is situated right on the beach front and has direct access to the sand from the hotel. Calm, safe and clean, the beach is perfect for families with children and there are several providers of non-motorised watersports nearby - just ask the concierge. Guests at the hotel benefit from a private section of beach with loungers and parasols and a drink service. Towels are of course provided free of charge.

    To know

The Thalassa Sea and Spa is the newer of the two neighbouring Sofitel properties in Agadir and was opened in 2012. The interior design is the work of Didier Rey, famous for, amongst other projects, the newly renovated Mamounia hotel in Marrakech. You will find a lot of local craftsmanship on show throughout the hotel, as well as international design elements bringing together both Moroccan and French touches. The focus of the hotel is wellbeing which is reflected in the thalassotherapy centre and the several restaurants at the property.

The Tildi is an unexceptional family property located in a no man's land part of the resort of Agadir. While the rooms are in decent condition they are pretty uninspiring as are the common areas of the hotel. The most attractive part of the hotel is arguably its swimming pool which is well exposed and enjoys pleasant surroundings. The hotel does have a spa but it is nothing to write home about which is also true for the food, which we found to be extremely mediocre. Not a million miles from the beach and with some soft animation (games, activities, competitions etc), the Tildi might suit a family or couple on a budget who don't feel the need to be at the centre of the action in the town.

The Adrar Hotel is an ageing structure without the slightest pretension. However, as a guest you will feel at home here. The good will of the staff probably plays an important role in this. The rooms have all been renovated, and really stand out thanks to their bright colours. Touches of very kitsch decoration give the hotel a unique and unusual character.

A club hotel par excellence, the Almoggar is a large full-service family hotel right on the Agadir beachfront. The rooms are apartment-like in style and are basic but functional while the large public areas are pleasant to be in. There is a full animation programme for both adults and kids and thanks to its height there are some good oceans views to be had from the hotel. Food is not one of the strong points at the Almoggar but given the hotel's rates this should not be a surprise. We are sure though that children will enjoy their stay here which will in turn please the parents!

If you are looking for a good family hotel where all ages can have a good time then the Beach Albatros is one place you might have to consider. Pretty close to the beach being one of the front row of hotels, it is a relatively large complex with everything you need for a successful holiday. The rooms, of which there is only one category, are fairly well appointed although could be bigger, the outdoor spaces are animated and convivial and the standard of food is above average for Agadir. In addition to the entertainment for the little ones, the adults can take advantage of the decent spa facility and for party-goers the biggest nightclub in the town will soon be open. The Beach Albatros is a good value property where your needs, if not too high, will be met.

The rooms are very spacious and well appointed, the décor is in good taste, the food is reasonable, the staff personable and the spa, unlike so many of its neighbours', actually resembles a spa. With the exception of the newer of the pair of French properties, the Royalbay's architecture and design is unparalleled as is the standard of the service, food and facilities. The guestrooms are spacious and extremely well appointed, the public spaces are impeccably maintained and you will not find a smarter kids club anywhere. As well as enjoying a beachfront location the hotel also boasts a quiet spot along the bay, away from the chaos of the tourist centre. The one thing we were surprised about is the lack of privacy on the terraces and balconies of the rooms, especially the most expensive.
