The slogan of the chain, 'Remarkable European Flair' illustrates the atmosphere at the Ajman Kempinski very well. The hotel is a good choice for those looking for peace and quiet whilst remaining within driving distance of Dubai action. The upside to the hotel is its long quiet beach which is ideal for days spent sunbathing. As Ajman is fairly small, it is ideal for a long weekend away from the hustle and bustle. The service here is irreproachable and the staff knows how to make you feel genuinely welcome.

    Location 7.0 /10

The hotel is located in Ajman, the smallest of the seven Emirates. To get to Dubai it is a 20minute drive through Sharjah, another one of the Emirates, and on to Dubai. Best to venture over outside of peak times, otherwise traffic jams could mean being stuck for over an hour. The hotel is situated right opposite the port across the street as well as the Sheikh's office, and looks out onto the sea on the other side.

    Accommodation 8.00 /10

The room categories are as follows: Cabana, Deluxe, Executive, Leisure Club. The hotel also has Junior, Deluxe and Executive suites, as well as a Royal Suite. The rooms are warm and comfortable although not the biggest in size. The Executive rooms were particularly pleasant. They have recently been renovated and look a lot more modern, in an Arabic theme with dashes of reds or blues. All rooms now have LCD televisions for instance, which is not illustrated on the website yet. The beds are all queen if not king size with a beautiful fabric canopy over the bed. The bathrooms are also worth a mention. In most Laguna Pool Side rooms they give out on to the bedroom which makes the room feel bigger and more spacious. The balcony is also a great plus - looking out onto the sea is uplifting and relaxing to get away from it all! However there are no tea and coffee facilities in the rooms.

    Overview 7.75 /10

This five star hotel complex feels fairly large as it has numerous bars and restaurants; however it only has 182 rooms, making it fairly small for a resort, which can be felt in the atmosphere. Upon entering the ambient lighting of the lobby, a calm atmosphere settles. The lobby is simple yet elegant with touches of Middle-Eastern influence such as three huge Swarovski chandeliers and glass-stained windows. The soft smell of incense lingers as guests sit at the reception desk for check-in. The main lobby area gives way to a coffee lounge. The lobby's fresh simple elegance is dotted with colourful orchid arrangements, bringing life into the building.

    Food and drink 8.00 /10

One of the advantages of the hotel is its food outlets. Guests have the choice between its seven cafés and restaurants: Café Kranzler, Hai Tao, Sabella's, Bukhara, Café on First, Lobby Lounge and the Beach Comber (beach bar). They all have their own charms but our firm favourite is the Indian restaurant, the 'Bukhara', where the staff is very friendly and attentive, and where there is no cutlery in sight! All food is eaten in the traditional Indian manner, with your hands. There are also three bars. One in the lobby, where shisha can be smoked in the evenings. There is also Field Experience, the hotel sports bar, a great place for sports fans who find withdrawal symptoms from the game too hard to handle. The hotel also has a bowling alley, 'Cosmic Alley' which is an original feature for a hotel, even in the innovative Emirates!

    Beach 8.25 /10

The hotel beach is definitely its winning feature. A long, natural sandy beach unravels for guests to enjoy. The water is fairly clear. There is also the Beach Comber bar hiding on the foliage which is pleasant although the food can be a little on the pricy side. The beach is otherwise clean and calm.

    To know

Opened in 1998, the Kempinski Hotel Ajman is somewhat of a landmark as it was the first of the chain to open in the Middle East and Africa. The hotel has been working on renovations and has recently completed the 5th to the 8th floor. The hotel has two spas; the Laguna spa is currently operating but will be completed in June. The hotel also has a shuttle bus running four times a day to the nearest sights. There is also a kids' club (9am-1pm and 2pm-6pm daily). The opening times must be checked before hand in low season.
