    Location 6.25 /10

The Akumal Beach resort is situated beside the sea, a 5-minute walk along the beach from Akumal. Heading south, it takes about 20 minutes to reach Tulum by car, and heading north, Playa del Carmen is around half an hour away. Allow an hour and a half to get to Cancun international airport.

    Accommodation 7.20 /10

The Akumal Beach has two types of guest room, and the differences between the two are quite significant. Buildings 1, 2 and 3 overlook the garden and the other buildings, so they should be avoided if you wish to wake up to sea views. The superior rooms are located in the 2-storey buildings and measure more than 30 m². They are all provided with a pretty, fixed headboard, a television with 32 channels, a free safe, individual air-conditioning and a fan, a direct international telephone line, and a large balcony or terrace. Overall they are bright and fresh, although the combinations of colours are sometimes a bit of a surprise. The bathroom is provided with quite a large marble shower, a hair-dryer and biodegradable hospitality products. The standard rooms (with a balcony) have less character and are completely different in that they benefit from less light, and are smaller and oddly shaped.

    Overview 7.45 /10

The Akumal Beach was built in 1994 and renovated after hurricanes Emily and Wilma in 2005. It has 241 guest rooms spread over 7 long buildings arranged parallel to the beach. The standard rooms take up four of these buildings. The hotel's surroundings are very peaceful and natural. The wonderful view of the sea can be seen from the stylish lobby, with its parquet flooring and bright colours. Little pathways lined with bushes and lawns lead to the hotel's two large swimming pools. Loud music and organised entertainment are staged just next to the pool bar, which can be a bit of a nuisance. The miniclub has an outdoor area with a slide, a lawn and a little security barrier. As for the gym, try to forget it exists, as you will only be disappointed!

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The Akumal Beach offers varied international cuisine. The main restaurant is open from 6:45am to 10:00am for breakfast and from 12:00pm to 2:00pm for lunch. The long buffet counter overlooks the beach and sea. At least 11 hot dishes are available at lunchtime, including fish caught fresh the same morning. In the evening, a different buffet theme is organised every night on a fortnightly cycle. Dinner options also include two à la carte restaurants: one serves Italian food, the other Mexican (reservation required). Both are located in a round building with a palapa roof and enjoy direct views over the turquoise sea. Finally, the hotel also has 3 bars and a snack bar.

    Beach 7.70 /10

The Akumal Beach overlooks a bay over half a mile long, and is situated opposite a long, rather narrow beach. Deckchairs, palapa parasols, restaurants and water sports facilities are all available on site. Depending on where on the beach you decide to sit, some parts of the beach are full of activity while others are very peaceful. There is some seaweed on the foreshore and rocks break the surface of the water and poke out of the sea. However, you won't necessarily need to wear sandals, because some parts of the beach are not affected by these features. Turtles lay their eggs on a fairly sheltered part of the beach. Guests are actually given a book when they arrive, explaining everything they need to know in order to avoid disturbing these creatures.

    To know

The hotel belongs to an Italian chain. The entertainment team consists of 12 staff members, and shows (cabaret, Chicago, Africa, etc.) are organised every day of the week in the theatre, in the lobby bar and on the beach. Most of the guests staying at the hotel are Italians (about 60%), followed by French guests, Canadians, Americans, etc. Among these guests are a great many family groups. Guests who return to the Akumal Beach more than three times plant a palm tree in a very fun little ceremony. There are therefore 150 palm trees bearing a little sign displaying the name of regular guests. The hotel has a Wi-Fi internet connection in the lobby. Three types of massage are also available here.

Accommodation tip: if you want a room with a real view over the turquoise water, ask to stay in building 4, on the first floor.
