The hotel's 630 rooms are distributed into 18 rooms per building. Quite extensive, in shades of green (over an area of 215 ft²), they are equipped with rattan furniture and decorated with paintings on the walls. Comfortable and well furnished, all rooms are equipped with central air conditioning, ceiling fans, satellite television, a safe, a mini-bar (but note that fruit juice, beer and chocolates are offered free of charge), direct dial telephone for international calls and a balcony. Many storage lockers. The bathrooms are supplied with personal skin care products, a bath tub and a hair dryer. Note that the suites, one of the peculiarities in the Akumal, are barely larger than standard rooms and provide the same equipment and services.

Built in 2001, the hotel is composed of some 40 buildings rising on three floors. The lobby sets the tone: huge under its roof of palapas, rattan furniture, topped with vines and flowers attractively arranged on a floor inlaid with marble pieces of coral, it is well ventilated thanls to the ceiling fans. It opens onto the gardens outside where you can see the swimming pools in the background, arranged on different levels, then the sea. The grass is freshly green and the paths are well maintained. The only bad point: the buildings painted in shades of ochre combined with an electric blue does not always match harmoniously the gardens. As "twin brother" of the Bahia Principe Tulum hotel, which is just next door, the Akumal is quieter and away from the animations.

The "Hacienda" offers a common space shared by the two hotels. It has two bars, a night club and a gourmet restaurant that serves oriental specialities a la carte for dinner. The buffet restaurant of the hotel with a capacity of up to 600 people, is divided into two separate rooms retaining a confined atmosphere. The tables, arranged in wooden furniture, are sufficiently spaced and surrounded by Mayan frescoes and paintings on the walls. Local and international cuisine are on the menu. Every evening, a thematic evening is offered: Spanish, French, Italian, Mexican, Caribbean... In short, the choice is yours. In addition, five restaurants serve specialities a la carte. Finally, an Italian restaurant, a fish restaurant and a seafood restaurant are located in the gardens of the hotel. A Mexican restaurant and a steak-house near the snack bar open 24 hours (quite an advantage worth mentioning) are located near the beach at the nearby hotel. Finally, a gourmet restaurant invites you near the reception of the Tulum hotel. In total, six bars are available to the clients of the complex... As for choice, everything is up to you.

The Akumal has a beautiful beach, dotted by small palm trees and equipped with all necessary facilities: plastic deck chairs, sufficiently enough, showers, water sports (only non-motorised sports are available to protect the coral reef)... The sand is divinely fine and the water is crystal clear. The beach is busy but not noisy. But the creek, which has a limited capacity, should receive part of the guests from the neighbouring hotel. Fortunately, the beach of the small seaside town of Akumal stretching over one mile, is accessible from the hotel within some 10 minutes on foot.

Housed on Akumal Bay, a quiet seaside resort, the hotel faces the Bahia Principe Tulum, the second hotel of the complex.
Electric shuttles commute between the two hotels from 7 a.m. until midnight, every 10 minutes. You can stay on all inclusive service and have free access to all facilities (including restaurants) of the two hotels. The hotel has a team of 30 to 40 animators - multilingual - to enliven your stay.
A golf course and 400 rooms were added at the end of 2006.
