    Location 6.8 /10

At the debut of Cap d'Antibes, La Villa is nestled in a leafy, residential area only 10 minutes from the centre of Juan-les-Pins where guests will find boutiques, bars, restaurants and beaches. Nice Côte d'Azur Airport is about a 25 minute drive from the hotel.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

There are 26 rooms at La Villa. Those in the principal building (20) have views of the sea or over the gardens and as far as the Alps in the distance (on a clear day). The hotel corridors are lined with mustard and mocha vases, while the large windows on the landings allow for lots of light. Those rooms at the back of the hotel enjoy views over the pool and the pines and palms of the surrounding residential area. Rooms are quiet; windows and glass doors are double glazed for soundproofing but it is also down to the fact the hotel is located in a relatively calm corner of Juan-les-Pins. Standard and comfort rooms are available with either garden or sea view, while those who prefer more space and luxury should opt for the junior suite. There are also interconnecting rooms available.

Accommodation in the main building is awash in chocolate and coffee tones, with attractive and modern furnishings ensuring a sleek but warm feel. All rooms are equipped with a flat screen television and, in the junior suites and comfort categories, an iPod docking station. All rooms are clean, spacious and also benefit from natural light. Special mention: the bathrooms decked out in modern bathroom fittings and topped off with ornate pearly silver mirror frames.

Meanwhile, in the pavilion, there are three rooms on the ground floor with private terrace, and three rooms on the top floor with private balcony. These rooms are decorated in a more feminine style, with pretty details from the materials used for the bed linen and the curtains, to the mounted lamps with crystal features. The colour palette is a mix of soft plums and lilacs, contrasting with pearl grey and muted silver.

There are no family rooms as such at La Villa, but an extra bed can be added in the junior suites and comfort rooms for this purpose.

    Overview 9.20 /10

Last renovated in 2008, La Villa's good looks remain very much intact. With a total of only 26 rooms (20 in the main building and six in the poolside pavilion), the hotel is a calm place to holiday in Antibes. The attractive white building of only three storeys contains a spacious, beautifully decorated lobby, breakfast room, computer corner and bar and lounge. In the rear gardens, guests will find an outdoor pool by a raised wooden deck sprinkled with a mix of outdoor dining settings, hammocks and daybeds. An outdoor bar serves drinks and light meals in the high season. The pool is heated between April and October and is lined with several sun loungers. Besides the pool facility, guests may also rent bicycles during the high season.

Meanwhile, the interiors fuse various ethnic styles; throwing together African and Asian influenced elements to create a wonderfully eclectic mix. This is no truer than in the lobby; the room is awash in exotic objets d'art (Buddha statue, chests, urns) but also more modern items such as giant vases and curvy lamps. Add incense, candles, orchids, dark leather armchairs, a wallpapered column, intricate carved wooden arches and folding screens and you have a very cool and definitely exotic atmosphere. Leading off from the lobby is a small bar and lounge/library with furnishings upholstered in cheetah and leopard print, overlooked by a huge wooden carving of a giraffe.

    Food and drink

There is no restaurant at La Villa (hence the absence of a Food and Drink score) however a continental buffet breakfast (18 euros, £15.90) is served in the breakfast room adjacent to the lobby. In a long room set with dining tables draped in beige and white tablecloths; honey-hued vases, wrought iron chandeliers, carved folding screens and potted plants inject some warmth into what would otherwise be a cold place to dine. The breakfast room opens on to a paved, multi-tiered terrace with outdoor settings nestled amongst the hedges and shrubs.

During summer, a very limited menu of light dishes is served poolside between 11:00am and 7:00pm. An example of what's available: pizzas go for 14 euros (£12.35), beef carpaccio 12 euros (£10.60) and prawn and artichoke risotto 15 euros (£13.25). The same menu is available on a room service basis between 11:00am and 10:00pm.

Lovers of champagne will surely appreciate the fact that the hotel's owners hail from Reims (home of the bubbly beverage) and that they produce their own fizz - available for purchase at La Villa.

    To know

La Villa is open between March and November.
Some history for you: the hotel began as a private residence in the 1800's, only welcoming guests around the turn of the century. Back then it was known as the Bellevue, and its then owner Gustave Emile Boissonade de Fontarabie passed away peacefully in his sleep in 1910, under the olive tree that stands in the grounds to this day.

It's somewhat difficult to review the Ambassadeur; it is currently undergoing renovations for its transformation into a Marriott Renaissance hotel, to be completed sometime in 2012. The makeover couldn't come at a better time though as some aspects of the hotel are beginning to look somewhat tired. However, with spacious common areas, a good location and newly renovated rooms, the hotel is more than halfway there.

Despite its glamorous reputation, Antibes offers many budget accommodation choices - Les Strélitzias being one of them. Not your straightforward hotel, Les Strélitzias also counts a "residence" which is home to long-term renters as well as senior citizens. Despite this combination, this three-star hotel offers simple, comfortable accommodation in a quiet but handy location. Some rooms are yet to be renovated though; guests should avoid these and request those already made over instead.
