Less a hotel and more a hidden gem of a guesthouse, the delightful Mas Djoliba boasts bucket loads of Provencal charm. This 'mas' (old Provencal country house) is tucked away in a tranquil, residential area, high above Antibes, yet only a 15 minute walk from the centre of its picturesque old town. Dating back to 1920, the Mas Djoliba began trading as a hotel in the 50's with its 13 comfortable and thoughtfully decorated rooms. It is a good choice for holidaymakers, especially couples, seeking an authentic Provencal setting yet convenience to the attractions of Antibes.

    Location 6.84 /10

On the Avenue de Provence, which runs through a calm residential neighbourhood, the Mas Djoliba is situated off the Boulevard President Wilson, the main thoroughfare that links Antibes with Juan-les-Pins. Allow at least 20 minutes to drive to and from Nice Côte d'Azur Airport.

    Accommodation 8.20 /10

There are 13 rooms at the Mas Djoliba, mostly double rooms, but there are also triples as well as a single and family room (for four). Categories range from standard to comfort through to superior yet there is only one standard room; quite cramped but nevertheless clean and comfortable. Three rooms boast sea views, including the lovely family room on the top floor with its own roof terrace, while a few other rooms possess little balconies that overlook the fragrant, Provencal gardens.

It can be said that all rooms are immaculate and well maintained. Thoughtfully decorated in traditional Provencal style, features of the rooms include antique wardrobes, abstract paintings by the avant-garde artist Maurice Lemaître, and country-chic details such as doilies, wallpaper and broderie anglaise curtains. Each room features a different colour scheme but the palette remains loyal to Provence with plenty of yellows and soft pinky-reds, pale greens and cornflower blues. The rooms have an airy, summery feel to them, not only due to their décor but also due to the fact that they are spacious and receive lots of natural light.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The beautiful country house typical of the region is one of the few authentic 'mas' remaining in Antibes today, so there is a lot of history associated with it. The 13 rooms are found on the first and second floors, while the common areas are located on the ground floor. Facilities are basic but adequate and include a small lounge area that is connected with the breakfast room (used in the cooler months), and a porch used for alfresco dining, which overlooks a kidney-shaped pool nestled in the gardens.

One of the main things you notice at the Mas Djoliba is the abundance of beautiful plants and flowers; in pots, in flowerboxes, or left to grow freely, they add to the charm of the place. For a small hotel there is sufficient space; a front yard well-shaded with palms and orange trees provides private corners to relax with a book, while there is also adequate room surrounding the pool and porch. Indoors, the carpeted staircase and landings are decorated with fresh flowers, paintings and drawings, while a stained glass feature adds of character. Overall the big plus is feeling like you're in a big, cosy house rather than a traditional hotel. Meanwhile, WIFI connection and parking are free for guests.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

Breakfast and dinner are served every day (except Sunday when only breakfast is served); all guests are on the same half board meal plan. There is no traditional restaurant on-site which explains the set menu at dinner (four courses - starter, main, cheese and dessert). Breakfast is a cold, continental buffet selection (available between 8:00am and 10:00am) while the dinner menu consists of typical French dishes.

The breakfast room is found on the ground floor, while the adjacent lounge area with big screen TV also features a piano and fireplace with marble mantelpiece. An eclectic collection of objets d'art and paintings keep the space relatively cosy. Dinner is served outdoors on the covered porch, decorated with flowerpots and flowerboxes however the plastic dining settings slightly cheapen the look. Although there is no real bar or restaurant at the Mas Djoliba, there is a good variety of beverages available (soft drinks, hot drinks, wine, spirits, etc.) with a beer going for 4 euros (£3.50) and a bottle of wine upwards of 20 euros (£17.55).

    To know

The hotel is open from March until October every year. Renovations are carried out every winter to maintain its excellent three-star standard.
The meal plan is strictly half board (breakfast and dinner) - set menus at dinner only.
The Mas Djoliba is best suited to couples or people who are looking for a quiet, relaxing break. For this reason, there are no children's facilities on-site.

It's somewhat difficult to review the Ambassadeur; it is currently undergoing renovations for its transformation into a Marriott Renaissance hotel, to be completed sometime in 2012. The makeover couldn't come at a better time though as some aspects of the hotel are beginning to look somewhat tired. However, with spacious common areas, a good location and newly renovated rooms, the hotel is more than halfway there.
