Arenal, Costa Rica -

A 163-acre park at an altitude of 5358 feet awaits guests at the Arenal Paraiso. In perfect harmony with its verdant surroundings and overlooked by the Arenal volcano, the hotel offers horse-riding activities, a long tree-climbing assault course and hot springs, as well as the usual facilities. It is impossible not to appreciate the view of the volcano and the ubiquitous woodland surrounding the hotel, although you will not wish to linger in the accommodation itself, which is functional but devoid of style.

    Location 3.0 /10

The Arenal Paraiso is surrounded by nature and about 4 mi from Fortuna as well as being some 10 mi from the Arenal volcano. It takes about two and a half hours to reach San Jose International Airport.

    Accommodation 6.95 /10

Spread through a number of little houses, the 118 rooms are available in three categories: 74 deluxe, 42 standard and 2 suites. They all overlook the volcano, and all have a terrace or balcony. The standard rooms are around 25mē in size. The great advantage of these private areas is clearly their nice high ceilings. They are made of varnished wood, which injects some warmth into these functional but charmless spaces. The rooms, with tiled floors and cream-coloured walls, are bright thanks to their windows and bay-windows. The beds are hard, and the bedrooms also have a satellite television (95 channels), individual air conditioning, a fridge, telephone and tea and coffee making facilities. The small bathrooms have a big shower and very basic hospitality products. The soundproofing is unfortunately poor. The luxury rooms are located in small chalets on stilts. The harmony of these all-wood interiors (walls, ceiling and furniture) is unfortunately broken by the brown floor tiling.

    Overview 7.70 /10

The Arenal Paraiso, built in 1994 and renovated in 2007, covers 50 acres of an immense 163-acre property. The many chalets are scattered about this undulating landscape, surrounded by foliage in the most vivid of colours. The communal areas are concentrated in the same area. After crossing a large wooden courtyard, you will reach a large, pleasant, unpretentious spa. It is made up of various small wooden huts with bay windows, and has 7 massage rooms. The air flows freely throughout. Opposite this is a large swimming pool with a small bridge stretching across, and a second pool surprisingly green in colour. This natural water offers great health benefits. Nearby are eleven small pools, graded down the terraces. Although concealed by vegetation, they are all joined together. The water comes from hot springs. If you feel like reaching for the tree-tops, this is the departure point for the tree-climbing assault course, which takes about 2 hours. On the way is the unmissable beauty of the El Congo waterfall. You will need to exit the hotel and cross the road to get to the big ranch, owned by the Arenal Paraiso, and its 40 horses.

    Food and drink 7.20 /10

The restaurants are housed in a big building with many bay windows, in the heart of vegetation, and up to 200 guests can be seated at any one time. On your way in, turn left for the buffet or right for the steak house. Whichever you choose, you will be dining in a large space with all wood decor and a high ceiling, from which hang big wrought iron chandeliers. The dishes on offer (international cuisine) are varied, and are served from 6.30 to 9.30 am, 11.00 to 3.00 pm, and 5.30 to 10.00 pm.

    To know

Approximately 50% of the guests are American, and 30% French. In 2008, the hotel opened a big conference centre.

    Accommodation tip:
Ask for a room near to the reception to avoid having to cover tiresome distances and to easily reach the communal areas just next to the complex entrance!
