Open since the 1960s, the Arion Resort & Spa is named after the legendary poet. Its infrastructures were updated by architect Manolis Vourekas five years after its opening. At the time, it welcomed many famous guests, such as Nelson Mandela, Frank Sinatra, Jane Fonda, Jackie Onassis and Tony Blair. In 2004, the P. Masourides Company architecture firm and the Hirsch Bedner Associates interior design company carried out some major renovations. Their goal was to retain the establishment's classic style all while adding a touch of modernity. After it was re-opened in 2006, the Arion was welcomed into the Starwood Luxury Collection family. Today it belongs to the huge Astir Palace complex, like the Westin Athens and, in 2016, the W. The grounds extend over 74 acres on a private peninsula.

    Location 3.33 /10

Located between Attica and the Peloponnese in the Saronic Gulf, the bay of Vouliagmeni shelters the peninsula where the Westin Athens is found. The airport, the Acropolis and the port of Piraeus are all around 15 miles away, while the Temple of Poseidon and Cape Sounio are approximately 22 miles away.

    Accommodation 9.20 /10

The establishment has 123 rooms including 16 suites and 58 bungalows, 12 of which have a private swimming pool. The accommodations are split up by category, with either a view of the sea or the garden: the Deluxe room (26 m²), the Grand Deluxe room (41 m²), the Deluxe Suite (54 m²), the Ambassador suite (82 m², located on the 3rd floor) equipped with a sauna and a whirlpool, the very Art Deco Presidential Suite (175 m²), and finally the bungalows. This category is extremely nice but the units are too close together. All of the rooms have a balcony and the layout has been very well done (large desk, a lounge space, etc.). In the Deluxe rooms, the bathroom only has a wash basin and a bathtub, and a toilet. In the other categories, however, the bathrooms are spacious and equipped with a double wash basin, a bathtub, a shower and separate toilet. As for amenities, you'll have everything you need: air-conditioning, television, room service, minibar, etc.

    Overview 8.70 /10

Like its neighbour, the Westin Athens, the architecture of the main, 4-storey building of the Arion Resort and Spa is not very pretty on the outside. However, all of the infrastructures overlook the sea. What's more, the hotel gives off a rather cosy and peaceful atmosphere. It is apparent that the spot is completely adapted to relaxation and seaside fun. The long swimming pool is filled with seawater. The solariums surrounding it are equipped with lots of deckchairs with comfortable cushions. The spot is peaceful, like the rest of the establishment.

    Food and drink 8.70 /10

There are different places to eat at the hotel. The Alia Brasserie is open for all three meals of the day, from 7am to 11am, from 1pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 11pm. The cuisine is regional but also international. The Taverna 37 is a typically Greek tavern. From May to October you can have lunch facing the sea from 12pm to 6pm. For dinner, fans of Japanese fusion cuisine head to the Matsuhisa Athens. Keep in mind, though, that the opening hours are different depending on the day of the week. It is open from Monday to Thursday from 7:30pm to 1:00am, on Friday from 7:30pm to 1:30am, on Saturday from 2:30pm to 1:30am, and on Sunday from 1pm to 12:30am. For those who love Italian food, head to the Il Tramonto for dinner, from 7pm until midnight. If you're feeling thirsty, there are several watering holes: the Ski Bar on the beach, open from 10am to 8pm, but also the Alia Lounge Bar where you can enjoy snacks and cocktails from 9am to 1am.
And if you're looking for a change of scene, it is possible to take advantage of the restaurants at the Westin Athens: the Kymata Restaurant for lunch and dinner and the Galazia Hytra for dinner. For drinks, there is the Sofa Bar and the Blue Pool Bar.

    Spa 8.2 /10

The Arion Spa covers an area of 1,000 m². The atmosphere is calm and the decoration Zen. It's small indoor swimming pool is not big enough to swim in but it does have jets and whirlpools. There is a space dedicated to heat therapy " Heat Experiences ", which includes the indoor pool, a Turkish bath, a sauna, a shower with adjustable jets and a Kneipp footbath. The spa menu is varied but the prices are rarely less than ?100 (£80). Moreover, to take advantage of the spa's facilities without even purchasing any treatments, there is a ?25 (£20) entrance fee. Children under 6 are only allowed to enter between 9am and 2pm, accompanied by an adult. The entrance fee for them is ?15 (£12).

    Beach 6.20 /10

Unfortunately, the beach at the Arion Resort & Spa has the same problem as the one at the Westin Athens: it is too small. But to make up for this inconvenience, wooden solariums have been set up all along the shore. So there are enough deck chairs and parasols to laze around peacefully. Towels are also provided here free of charge. The water sports club proposes different water sports: windsurfing, inflatable rafts, surfing, jet skiing and lots more. However, these activities are available for an additional fee. The beach bar is open from 9:00am to 8pm during the summer season.

    To know

The Arion Resort and Spa is currently the most luxurious establishment of the Astir Palace complex. Its guests may use the facilities at the Westin Athens for not additional cost.

The Plaza Hotel is part of the myriad small and affordable hotels that have mushroomed in the centre of Athens. They do not offer many amenities but allow travellers with a tight budget to find comfortable accommodation in the heart of the town as a stopover to set off, entirely on foot, to see all the major monuments. A great advantage for this town with suffocating traffic.

One of few hotels in mainland Greece that has earned an official star in the Easyvoyage classification. An achievement which deserves to be noted. Indeed, this hotel is outstanding; firstly, due to its location, at the foot of the Acropolis, and secondly for its modern and very pleasant architecture, decor and furnishing, making it a great place to visit to stay when visiting the Greek capital for a couple of days.

The Plaka hotel offers excellent value for money. The rooms are clean and the decoration is modest. But you can especially take advantage of being literally at the gates of the beautiful district of Plaka with its army of small restaurants and busy streets open late at night, at the foot of the Acropolis. Finally, the luxury!

Unfortunately, it does not have much to offer in terms of facilities, but it is comfortable nevertheless. The hotel decor gives pride of place to various tones of beige which blend perfectly with the wooden furniture. The King George carries out regular renovations in order to keep the hotel at its best. The latest renovation work took place in 2013.

The Electra Palace Athens is a pleasant hotel with charm. It is one of the best hotels in the Greek capital. The facilities are comfortable and the service level is very respectable. Its greatest attraction is its view over the Acropolis, under a mile's walk away. Its location in the Plaka district is also an asset - the moment you step outside of the hotel you are instantly immersed in the Greek atmosphere of the city.

The Divani Palace Acropolis is one of the establishments in Athens that offers a high level of comfort. The hotel is charming and well set out, but it lacks personality. However, it is still a great base from which to visit the Greek capital thanks to its good location within the city. The guest rooms are comfortable but lack personality. On the other hand, the summer restaurant is a real asset: installed on the roof, it offers breathtaking views of the Acropolis.
