Hotel Angsana Balaclava Hotel 5 star
Coastal Road, Balaclava, Île Maurice Balaclava, Mauritius
Amy Adejokun Section editor

Part of the Thai Banyan Tree Group, the Angsana Balaclava offers the same level of service but in a smaller establishment. Suffice to say that it is simply superb. Located in the northwest of the island since December 2011, the hotel is both near to Grand Baie and yet tucked away in a peaceful setting. The clientèle is largely comprised of French, German, Chinese and English couples. The hotel hosts lots of weddings, and is an extremely popular honeymoon destination. Although there are no facilities specifically for children, 3 to 12 year olds stay for free with parents at the hotel. In any case, you're sure to remember watching the famous sunset on the beach for a long time to come...

    Location 8.0 /10

As its name suggests, the Angsana is located in the secluded village of Balaclava, away from the bustle of Grand Baie, which is just a 15 minutes drive away.

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The Angsana Balaclava has 52 guest rooms: 51 suites and a 770m² villa. There are four categories available: Garden Suite, Spa Suite, Beach Front Suite, and the Imperial Villa (for eight people). The basic suites (Garden) are 72m². The warmth of the wood blends well with the noble materials. It's easy to see the Banyan Tree Group touch. The decor can be summed up as elegant and charming, and the comfort is undeniable. The huge bed, which is almost impossible to leave, faces a modern lounge. The bathroom opens onto the bedroom, although the shower is installed right in the centre of the main room. This original idea adds more than a touch of character to the rooms. In terms of amenities there's not much missing; flat-screen television, ultra quiet air-conditioning, 24/7 room service...

    Overview 8.20 /10

Built, like all the hotels in the region, from volcanic stone, it's not its external appearance that sets the Angsana Balaclava apart from its competitors. On the other hand, once inside, its attractions are numerous: an unobstructed view of the beach, unwavering high-quality service, comfortable facilities... the list goes on. The lobby is practically outside, protected by a huge thatched roof with exposed beams. Right from the entrance, the view of the sea is breathtaking, and the singing of birds accompanies the lounge music in reception. At the foot of the latter is the magnificent swimming pool, built in a lagoon shape and surrounded by sand. Deckchairs are available but, for once, they're not squashed alongside each other on the poolside, although, space is still somewhat limited. That's also part of its charm: everything is gathered in the same place, other than the beach where you can feel like the only person on Earth...

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The main restaurant, Oriza, has an enchanting setting that only intensifies once night falls. Its terrace, furnished like a small private garden, is simply delightful, and meals are set to the soft background music of the piano. Lunch and dinner are served a la carte, whereas breakfast is served as a buffet for cold options, with hot options served to order at no extra charge. The Balinese chef proposes fusion cuisine with a mix of flavours from Bali, Thailand and Mauritius. A different menu is presented every evening, which can be adapted to individual tastes. We were lucky enough to try the grilled tuna and courgette risotto: the former is cooked to perfection, and the latter is surprisingly creamy. To finish it all off, the apple crumble with a twist is one of a kind.
Lunch is served at the pool bar, the Sylea: the octopus carpaccio is delicious, as is the heart of palm salad. Everything is high-quality and full of flavour. Note that meals are enjoyed outside on the sand. A sandwich costs around 600 rupees (£12), and a pizza 500 rupees (£10). The other dishes are all based on Mediterranean cuisine.
Once a week, the hotel organises a barbecue on the beach with a traditional Sega dance performance.

    Beach 8.20 /10

The hotel beach is just sublime, although in certain places it's rather narrow and sloping. The water is clear and the sand is fine, with no rocks in the sea. The wicker deckchairs are spaced out enough that everyone can enjoy some peace and quiet, and an on-site waiter service is provided by an attentive staff. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy complimentary snacks such as mini pizzas, among others, served on a tray. At the end of the beach is the water sports club, where various activities are available.
