    Location 4.0 /10

The hotel is located in Balaclava, on the north-west coast of Mauritius, with Grand Baie 9 mi and about 20 minutes from the hotel. Port Louis is about 25 minutes away by car, but the airport is a good hour away (31 mi).

    Accommodation 8.70 /10

The Grand Mauritian has 193 rooms spread over 15 villas, which can be reached either by foot or in a golf buggy. The different categories available are Deluxe rooms (105), Courtyard Junior suites (50), Luxury Terrace suites (33) and Grand Mauritian Spa suites (5). Some of the rooms are adjoining thanks to a shared corridor. The contemporary setting is held together well by the shades of taupe, ivory and pastel blue. The Deluxe rooms are very spacious and include a terrace on the ground floor or a large balcony on the 1st and 2nd floors. They have all the equipment you need: a cable television, discreet air-conditioning, a minibar with tea and coffee-making facilities, an iron and an ironing board, a safe, a direct international telephone line and 24-hour room service. They are also furnished with the famous Luxury Collection bed, which is a joy to sleep in and difficult to rise from come breakfast time! As for the bathroom, it opens onto the bedroom and is clad throughout in marble and well equipped with a hair-dryer, bathrobes, slippers and Elemis hospitality products. Centre stage is taken up by a large shower and bathtub, with a washbasin on either side.

    Overview 8.95 /10

There is plenty of space at the Grand Mauritian, thanks to its 25-acre property! You will barely have set foot in the lobby before you are struck by the magnificent view of the Indian Ocean in front of you. The reception area is simple, minimalist but very stylish; it opens on to the outside and it is simply covered by a sugar cane thatched roof. A huge pool built over different levels, to form a staircase, descends down towards the sea. There is also a main swimming pool, one of the largest on the island, which is built of slate and is even decorated by the gardeners with flowerbeds in its centre. Deck chairs are set around it but in small alcoves to allow you to enjoy some privacy. The second swimming pool is on the other side of reception area. The overflow pool is just next to the beach and blends in perfectly with the Indian Ocean. The hotel offers two contrasting atmospheres: by day, the gardens seem to somehow absorb and blend in with the hotel buildings (made of volcanic rock and balau wood), whereas by night the various spaces are illuminated.
If you're looking for relaxation, head for the Mandara Spa: the six villas house ten treatment rooms and most of the therapies come from Bali. If you have energy to burn, the gym has machines for cardio training, bodybuilding and general exercise, not to mention an amazing view.

    Food and drink 8.95 /10

The Grand Mauritian has two main restaurants. The first, The Seasons By Stéphane, is headed by a French chef of the same name. The buffet breakfast served from 6:30 am to 11:00 am is sure to include something that takes your fancy, with hot and cold dishes, pastries, pancakes, etc... Dinner is served a la carte, but the choice is agonising because there are no fewer than four different types of cuisine: African, Mauritian, Thai and Indian. The menu is as thick as a novel! The dining room is set over different levels and split into various rooms, so you can easily find a quiet spot and even enjoy your meal outside on the terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean. The kitchen that opens onto the restaurant is quite simply superb. The second restaurant, Brezza, is managed by an Italian chef, Matteo Francini, and serves a la carte meals for lunch and dinner. There is a large selection of Italian dishes, including a delicious risotto or freshly made ravioli. The decor could not be more different to a traditional pizzeria, and the red shades blend perfectly with the blue of the main swimming pool nearby. The restaurant has a pretty view over the sea and there are 260 different wines to choose from. You can also have your meal inside. However, the prices at both the Seasons and at Brezza are quite high, with most dishes pushing ?20, and only a few at around ?15. A lighter lunch can be taken on the beach, at Bar 68, which is open from 9:00 am to 11:00 pm, or at Reflections, which is open from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm next to the overflow pool. You can even have your meals brought to you in the comfort of your own deckchair!

    Beach 7.45 /10

The beach of the Grand Mauritian belongs to a marine reserve, and each stone is numbered. The conservation and the wild appearance of the place makes the location magnificent. Bathing, however, is not an easy matter, given the number of rocks in the water. Deck chairs and parasols are dotted around here and there, so it is easy to find a nice secluded spot. If you need anything, there's no need to chase after anyone; just display the little flag next to your recliner... There is a water sports club on the beach which offers a number of activities for guests to enjoy.

    To know

Although more couples stay at The Grand Mauritian than families, it does have a children's club, the Explorer club, which is designed for 4 to 12 year olds. It not only offers activities within the club, but externally as well.

Part of the Thai Banyan Tree Group, the Angsana Balaclava offers the same level of service but in a smaller establishment. Suffice to say that it is simply superb. Located in the northwest of the island since December 2011, the hotel is both near to Grand Baie and yet tucked away in a peaceful setting. The clientèle is largely comprised of French, German, Chinese and English couples. The hotel hosts lots of weddings, and is an extremely popular honeymoon destination. Although there are no facilities specifically for children, 3 to 12 year olds stay for free with parents at the hotel. In any case, you're sure to remember watching the famous sunset on the beach for a long time to come...
