Hotel Salam Hotel Hotel 3 star
Avenue Van Vollenhoven 104 Bamako, Mali
Amy Adejokun Section editor

Next to Bamako's convention centre, the Salam hotel is one of the capital city's few hotels with complete Western-style comfort. Moreover, the interior decor shows evidence of the beauty of local handicraft. Guests have the pleasure of a swimming pool and a peaceful environment and some services are provided here which you will not really find anywhere else in Bamako.

    Location 5.0 /10

In the residential district near the river banks in Bamako, the Salam hotel stands between the congress centre, also called the International Conference Centre, and the huge and brand new administrative district. Bamako international airport is just 9 mi away.

    Accommodation 7.70 /10

The 124 guestrooms have a view of the garden, the pool or the car park; they are divided into 85 standard rooms (with a double bed), 24 rooms with twin beds, 6 junior suites and one Presidential suite. None of the rooms have a balcony, but they are spacious and comfortable, with a simple and classic layout, especially as far as the big beds and padded chairs are concerned. The pink, cream and brown fabrics are perfectly matched: long and thick curtains keep the light out and the painted wooden furniture posed on the soft carpet offers plenty of storage space. A small detail, which is very eye-catching, is the wall lamps around the mirrors which are in the shape of antelopes. Available facilities: a minibar, a television showing 14 channels, individual air-conditioning and a safe. Room service is available 24-hours a day.

    Overview 7.70 /10

Built in 2000, the Salam hotel is part of a peaceful estate decorated with flower beds, a lawn and a few young trees. This modern 5-floor building has been built from one block in the shape of a semi-circle. The interior Malian decoration adds pleasant touches to a rather plain lobby: Tuareg tables, a fašade for the main lift, carved wooden panels, wall lamps in the shape of antelopes, etc. It is a large entrance hall where most of the hotel's common areas are to be found: the reception desk (with rather slow service), the small comfortable bar somewhat below the level of the lobby, the efficient business centre, the small shops, the conference rooms, etc. On the first floor, guests can meet up in the evening in the American bar called the 'Pacha' and listen to a group of musicians present until 2:00 am. In the garden, adults can enjoy the hotel pool, while children can play in the paddling pool. Note that the gym is very small and the apparatus are in poor condition.

    Food and drink 7.45 /10

On the ground floor, a buffet is set up at the 'Manguier' restaurant in a rectangular hall with a view of the garden. Meals are served in a simple setting, with breakfast taken from 6:00 am to 10:00 am and lunch from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm. On the first floor, you will find Salam's second restaurant: 'Beau Rivage', with more refined decoration, round tables for small groups of guests and comfortable chairs, etc. Lunch and dinner are both served a la carte from 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm and the cuisine has many French influences. A snack bar by the pool is also available for nibbles throughout the day.

Several types of music are played in the evening: musicians play traditional instruments (including the kora) from Tuesday to Friday in the lobby; a female choir singer comes and sings in the main restaurant 5 days a week and a band plays at the Pacha from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am.
