Amy Adejokun Section editor

Definitely contemporary, the Sofitel So Mauritius owes part of its success to its stylish decor, designed by the famous designer Kenzo Takada. This establishment is in a class of its own among the upscale hotels here, which have, more or less, always been decorated in the same way. The Sofitel So Mauritius has brought an appreciated touch of rejuvenation to the Mauritian hotel industry! The quality of the service is impeccable. It is difficult not to be satisfied with the amount of attention paid to guests, who all benefit from a butler service regardless of the category of room. However, the hotel being set on a 32 acre property, the distances from one spot to another can sometimes be far.

    Location 9.45 /10

The hotel is located on the seafront, just under a mile away from the village of Bel Ombre. The airport is 19 mi away and takes about 1 hour to reach.

    Accommodation 9.60 /10

The 92 single-storey rooms are divided into 3 categories: 84 prestige suites, 6 beach villas and 2 Beaulieu villas. To reach the prestige suites you just have to follow a small path of stone slabs, which could be lit up a bit better in the evenings. There is a nice statue of a dodo bird at the entrance. Inside, we fell in love with the decor. The room oozes with modernity and design. The lime green really stands out as everything else is white. The king-size bed is more than comfortable and not the easiest to get out of. Open to the bedroom, the bathroom has a double wash basin as well as an indoor and outdoor shower. Thanks to the vegetation, the terrace is completely isolated. So much the better since you will particularly enjoy the outdoor bathtub in the rooms with a double bed. As for the amenities, nothing but high technology here: a Boss iPod dock, an interactive television with a keyboard and free Internet, and free Wi-Fi access. Good to know: it is possible to have breakfast in your room without being charged extra.

    Overview 8.95 /10

Designed as one-storey lodgings by architect Lek Bunnag and decorated by Kenzo Takada, the Sofitel So Mauritius officially opened on 15 December 2010. The atmosphere is resolutely Zen but still chic, making this a high quality establishment. Despite the hotel being relatively new, the gardens are extremely lush, thanks notably to the preservation of the plants that were already growing here before. There are no less than 300 different plant species.
Welcomed in a small pavilion that doesn't offer the slightest glimpse of the rest of the hotel but which does afford a superb view of the sea, guests are taken straight to their room for check-in via a golf cart. The hotel likes to say that it doesn't have a real lobby but rather a guest pavilion, which is considered to be a relaxation area.
The hotel's swimming pool is located between the main restaurant and the seaside. The pool stretches lengthwise along the beach and the trees bordering it protect it from the wind. The most spacious area is nevertheless too small for all the guests to be able to take advantage of the pool, just like the number of deckchairs around it. As for the So Spa, its architecture is very graphic. The 6 cabins are equipped with the Sofitel's famous and uber comfortable MyBeds! There is an acupuncturist at hand to establish an energy balance for every client and thus best adapt their treatment.

    Food and drink 9.30 /10

Expertly run by Isabelle Alexander, the establishment's main restaurant, Le Flamboyant, has a seating capacity of 150. Spread out on different levels and in various nooks, this layout eliminates the impression of there being a mass amount of diners and creates the feeling of privacy. Impressive during the day but spectacular at night, the way the lights play under the exposed beams 17m above the ground are quite simply superb. In the morning breakfast is served as a buffet and in the evening it is served in the French 'tables d'hôtes' style. Two menus are available, consisting of international dishes for the first one and Mauritian cuisine for the second one. The food is as delicious and the delicate and refined presentation of the plates is splendid.
The second restaurant, at the edge of the beach, offers a modern and contemporary setting for lunch. Served à la carte, it proposes elaborate dishes as well as sandwiches and pizza. The fried squid are exquisite, just like the frozen chocolate macaroon and the strawberries marinated with mint.
Head to the Le Takamaka bar for a before or after dinner drink to taste some of the cocktails concocted by the barman specialised in molecular cuisine. Among the many possibilities you can try a drink served as a spray!

    Beach 8.89 /10

On the edge of Bel Ombre beach, the Sofitel So Mauritius beach stretches out 520m. It runs along the entire bay and therefore has plenty of space. The deckchairs, accompanied by thatched-roof parasols, are well spaced out. The slope in the water is decent but there are few spots that are completely free of corals. Sandals might be useful for sensitive feet. From here you can make out the coral reef in the distance. Keep in mind that the beach is somewhat exposed to the wind. As for water activities, the hotel proposes daily outings on a glass-bottomed boat.

    To know

Despite a clientele that is mainly composed of couples, the hotel has a children's club for 3 to 12 year olds that is open every day. A programme of various indoor and outdoor activities is offered for 3 to 6 year olds and 7 to 12 year olds. The club has a 20 inch deep swimming pool.
There is free Wi-Fi Internet access available throughout the hotel.
The sports centre is well-equipped but the gym does not have many machines.
The hotel presents itself as gay-friendly.
For those who do not like to walk too much, the hotel has golf carts that guests can use on the hotel grounds.
One of the best services among those available at the hotel is the 'So Moment'. It consists of a private dinner organised upon request in a typical spot like the beach, or in a more unusual spot like the spa or vegetable garden.

The Telfair is a special hotel in the Mauritian landscape. WIth its very complete facilities, it is suitable for everyone : couples and families, sports enthusiasts and holiday vacationers seeking tranquillity. Purists could deplore its colonial architecture a little too worked out : the others will rush to stay here.

There is no denying that the Tamassa enjoys a beautiful location on the most unspoilt coast of the island, to the south of Mauritius. Of course, such locations usually come at a price: in this case, the lack of shops and bars in the area, although given that this is the sort of place you come to relax and enjoy the facilities at the hotel, that shouldn't bother you too much. The hotel does offer a so-called 'soft' entertainment programme though which means that everyone is free to join in or do their own thing, as they please. Open since 14th December 2007, the Tamassa is a very pleasant place to spend your holiday, not least because of the heavenly panoramic views surrounding the complex. It borders the Indian Ocean on one side, with the mountains in the background on the other. Add to this a young, friendly and dynamic team that are efficiency personified and you have the ingredients for a great holiday!
