Amy Adejokun Section editor

With its superior 5 star rating, a coveted place in the Leading Hotels of the World group, and a highly evocative name, the Palace might appear at first glance to be destined for greatness. However, a few steps along the entrance hall are all it takes to break the spell: '60's sophistication has been superseded by an outdated, almost kitsch, style, light-years from real palaces like the Adlon Kempinski. Having said this, the comfort and catering services are two areas that do deserve the elevated star rating...

    Location 7.38 /10

The Palace enjoys an ideal location at the heart of the German capital, just a stone's throw from the famous Kurfürstendamm avenue (Ku'Damm to those in the know). Equally popular among Berliners and tourists, this neighbourhood has countless features recommending it, including shopping centres, bars, restaurants, entertainment activities, tourist attractions and so on. All of this is just a few minutes away on foot from several U-bahn and S-bahn stations: Zoologischer Garten, Ulhandstraße, Kurfürstendamm, Augsburger Straße and Wittenbergplatz.

    Accommodation 7.15 /10

Given the size of the communal areas, you might expect to find accommodation for a record number of guests, but the Palace actually only contains 250 rooms and 32 suites. 127 of the rooms were renovated in 2005, and the remainder are still waiting their turn. Several categories are available: standard, superior and deluxe. Booking into one of the newer rooms comes at a price, as they are all in the deluxe category. Although their simple but modern decor is a bit different from that found elsewhere in the hotel, the same cannot be said of the unrenovated rooms. Management describes them as "elegant and classic", but they are actually rather old-fashioned spaces, much like the rest of the establishment. On the other hand, the facilities do meet the levels of comfort expected of a luxury hotel, including a plasma screen television, telephones, individual air conditioning, a safe, a mini bar with tea and coffee-making facilities, and a standard bathroom containing a bathtub, telephone, "Le Palace" welcome toiletries and a hair dryer. The Palace also has several suites decorated to original themes: oriental, lotus, panda, etc.

    Overview 7.45 /10

At first glance, the Palace seems quite stylish, with background music, a porter, a large semi-circular reception counter, and chairs with duck-shaped headrests, not to mention the flawless marble that has found its way into much of the lobby area. However, upon closer inspection, the whole place looks a bit over overrated, in spite of the renovations. The different styles do not compliment one another very well, one example being the cheap-looking leather sofas positioned alongside the stylish, classic armchairs. This impression is only reinforced by further exploration of the 9 storey hotel building. In spite of its size (800m²), the spa does little to raise the bar, possibly because of the old-fashioned drawings decorating the wall of the (large) swimming pool. Nothing negative can be said about the amenities though, which include a whirlpool bath, 3 saunas, 3 treatment rooms, a gym with a terrace, a solarium, etc. There is no real business centre, but a computer is provided for guests.

    Food and drink 8.45 /10

If one thing is for sure, the Palace can be proud of its catering options! Not satisfied with simply offering a restaurant preparing fine French cuisine that has boasted a Michelin star since 1997 and that has 3 stars in the French restaurant guide Gault Millau, the Palace has a real treasure trove of a wine cellar, with more than 1,500 different wines stored religiously behind a display window. Quality does not come cheap though, and a 4 dish meal will set you back 78 pounds. Breakfast is a large buffet of cold and savoury dishes taken in a large room with seating for 250 guests and, apart from a bronze statue and Art Deco glass roof, it is unremarkable. Bear in mind that the Palace also has 5 private dining rooms and 2 bars, one of which is a bar-club. Snacks and drinks are served in one, while cocktails and 67 different whiskies can be enjoyed in the other.

    To know

The Palace was built in 1968 and enlarged a few years later, but only became part of the Leading Hotels of the Word group in 2005, when extensive renovations were done on some of the rooms. In 2008, new furniture was brought in, a new carpet was fitted, and.the restaurant dining areas were also renovated.

Although it opened in the 80's, the Steigenberger Hotel is so modern and trendy that it looks as though it was built yesterday... However, it should be mentioned that renovations are routinely carried out in this establishment. In addition, the hotel has modern amenities, relaxation facilities, and a large business centre... The Steigenberger is therefore suited to any type of stay and clientele. However, there is a slight drawback: the comings and goings in the lobby when big conferences are held. The general bustle on these occasions is exhausting.

The quotation above the entrance to the Concorde immediately sets the tone for the rest of the establishment: 'At first, I didn't feel like I was in Berlin - everything reminded me of France'. Indeed, the hotel might be located at the very heart of the German capital, but you wouldn't necessarily know it until you look out the window. The very French ambience will undoubtedly be a hit with foreigners, as well the comfort and stylish decor, but if you have a thing against chain hotels, you'd best look elsewhere!

The Berlin Kudamm opened in 1989, the same year as the fall of the wall, and was enlarged in 1996. This is the oldest of the three art'otel establishments to have opened in the German capital. Here guests can discover the strange universe of the artist Wolf Vostell, one of the creators of the happening movement or environmental art. However, the "hotel version" is toned down and politically correct! This urban hotel is recommended to art lovers or those simply looking for a bit of colour during their stay in Berlin.

It actually opened in 1882 and has undergone constant renovations since, with great care being taken to protect the building. The interior breaks away from the modern style favoured by most of the hotels in the area. The Residenz has retained a classic style despite adopting all the necessary modern amenities. It has tanning beds, massage parlours, a sauna, and a fitness centre.

The Gates is a small hotel set apart from the bustling city life of Berlin, but that nevertheless harbours a number of secrets... Indeed, despite the unassuming feel of the place, it has provided a roof over the heads of several celebrities who were friends with the owner's previous wife, a ballerina. Today, the hotel's real draw is its historical features, which are exemplified by the antique decor of the communal areas. There is nothing particularly special about the revamped guests rooms or the rest of the hotel. This establishment is a good option for visitors looking for peace and quiet during their stay.

This hotel is a member of the German chain, Gran City, and nestles at the heart of the sophisticated district of Charlottenburg, a stone's throw from the famous Ku'damm avenue. It is a comfortable 4-star establishment, but is slightly lacking in terms of facilities. However, it is nicely decorated and has a sushi bar where you can enjoy fusion cuisine with Latin American influences. Guests who book into one of the executive rooms, which are called 'business rooms' here, have free access to the executive lounge reserved for them, and can use the computers and printer provided here. Fitness fanatics, meanwhile, can cross the road to use the facilities of the neighbouring hotel, the Berlin Zentrum.

The hotel also boasts a nice, well-lit bar overlooking the patio, a good place to relax by day and by night, as well as a well-equipped gym with around a dozen machines, perfect for a good workout after a long day at work or sightseeing. Of the 316 guest rooms at the hotel only the Superior rooms have been renovated and now feature carpeted floors, a leather armchair, and a few pieces of white furniture.

Its name may be sunny but the California Hotel does little to light up Kurfürstendamm avenue, where it has been residing for 25 years. Even its 4 star status is deceiving in a city where hotels are continuously outdoing each other in terms of their imaginative interior decoration. Despite the opening of a brand new section and a few originally themed suites, the California is far below the general standard of its competitors. Although the interior decoration is not very original, the hotel does offer quality services.

At the foot of the Brandenburg Gate, this highly luxurious hotel aspires to be the worthy successor of the illustrious hotel located on the same spot and destroyed during World War 2, but it does claim a modern facet to its service and decor. Managed by the Kempinski group, this hotel is hailed by all as a gem of architecture, with perfect technique and ambiance. These assets did not leave celebrities such as Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin or still, many politicians, who all stayed at this hotel, unmoved. Most of the guests staying at this elegant hotel, which stands between the avenues of 'Unter den Linden' and 'Friedrichstraße', do not know about its history. The chunk of wall displayed near the front door is the first clue. Built in 1987, the Westin Grand Hotel replaced a shopping centre destroyed during the Great War. This establishment inherited its predecessor's refinement, as well as a few almost identically reconstructed former characteristics. The rest of the hotel teeters between a classical and a contemporary style. Everyone should be able to find what they are looking for here... as long as they can afford it of course!

The Berlin Movenpick hotel is much like its home town. It's a surprisingly trendy establishment. It was built in 1914 by Herr Siemens, opposite his first factory, and still shows many industrial architectural elements of that era, associated with a modern interior and noble materials such as European wallnut wood. With items taken from the ancient next-door railway station decorating each floor, the industrial interior is complete. The establishment includes 243 fully-equipped rooms (the standard ones feature a bathtub designed by Philippe Starck), a business centre with two computers connected to the Internet, a gym and a sauna. The restaurant and its large bay window which opens up in the summer are worthy of mention.
