This Best Western hotel located on Bilbao's riverfront just behind the Guggenheim seems to be stuck in the days when Bilbao was the Basque country's largest industrial city, with its brown brickwork, high-rise façade and the grey paved area leading clients to the entrance. Business clients just looking for a base to spend a few days could be happy here, but frankly the hotel does not match the standards set by its competitors and therefore has little to offer families, couples or solo travellers, who could easily find a boutique design, or simply a more modern hotel for more-or-less the same price.

    Location 7.01 /10

The Conde Duque Hotel is undoubtedly well situated, with a view onto the river and just a short 5 minute walk from the Guggenheim. A 15 minute walk down the riverside in the other direction will take you to the old town - where all the best bars and restaurants can be found. Alternatively, a quick trip across the river and a short walk away leads guests to the Parque de Dña. Casilda Iturrizar - a nice place to unwind in summer. Bilbao airport is a mere 9 miles away and can be reached by taxi or bus with a 20 minute journey.

    Accommodation 5.95 /10

The Conde Duque's 67 rooms are spread out over nine floors, with 42 interior view and 25 exterior view rooms. The décor here is rather drab, with grey and brown being the predominant colours (which does little to enhance the rooms which are already lacking in natural light) and with little else in the form of furniture to distract guests from this. Each room does however, include a wardrobe, a desk and chair, and a free-to-use safe. Notably missing is a minibar, yet we were advised that guests could order complimentary tea and coffee to be brought to their room by telephoning reception. The bathrooms are functional and are well stocked with hospitality products, with a Spanish tiling theme surrounding the sink and on the walls. The showerheads are rather small and several bathrooms had a slightly dank smell to them.

    Overview 8.20 /10

The layout of the hotel being a little strange, the main entrance welcomes guests into the bar, which they then have to walk through to access reception. The reception desk is located within a large lobby with a slightly dated but nevertheless comfortable style, cream and maroon velvet sofas, a polished wooden floor, and spotlights or mirrors adorning the walls. Friendly and accommodating reception staff will greet you here, and elevators are available in the lobby to take you up to your room - which could be on any one of the nine floors.

    Food and drink 5.95 /10

Due to Bilbao's reputation as a centre of culinary excellence, many hotels do not place much emphasis on their restaurants or bars, as guests are encouraged to go out and sample the local cuisine instead. As such, Conde Duque's hotel bar, located just inside the main entrance, feels a little cold and lacks atmosphere and the food is fairly basic. The restaurant has three services daily, and the breakfast buffet is set up in here in the mornings between 7:30 and 10:30am. Alternatively, the hotel offers room service from 8:00 - 10:30am for guests who fancy breakfast in bed.

    To know

Part of the well-known group Best Western, Conde Duque offers all the regular services that normally figure in the chain's hotels such as laundry service, parking, free Wi-Fi and complimentary use of the safes in rooms. In fact, Conde Duque is the only Best Western hotel located in the Basque Country. Built in 1966, the hotel is starting to show its age a little, despite regular minor renovations being carried out every year.

This five star hotel in one of Bilbao's calm business and residential districts has a luxurious, almost gaudy design which attracts mainly couples on a city break and the occasional business traveller. The design, when considered at any one point in the hotel, seems tasteful and unique. However, when considering the hotel as a whole, the many different styles of design seem to give off more of a feeling of 'bazaar' than luxury hotel. Nevertheless, the establishment certainly provides a unique experience and some guests may even like the hotel more for the fact that it seems to have no consistent theme.

Hotel Abando is the sister hotel to the five star Hotel Carlton owned by the same chain just a 10 minute walk away. Whilst Carlton attracts a wide range of guests, Abando caters more to business clients. A large marble entranceway greets guests upon arrival, with staff on hand ready to take your luggage to your room. Although the decoration and facilities may not be quite as luxurious as Carlton, service is an equally high priority here and all rooms are immaculately clean. The décor varies a little from floor to floor, yet the majority of rooms have been decorated in a warm (if slightly dated) fashion.

The Gran Hotel Domine seems to be trying to capitalise on Bilbao's relatively recent reputation as a hub of art and design, with its mix of gigantic sculptures, furniture resembling biting lips and original works by Javier Mariscal - a Spanish artist whose film 'Chico and Rita' was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. However, this hotel will not be welcoming budding artists on a student or backpackers' budget anytime soon. Rather, 70 percent of its clients are travelling on business. Whilst the hotel boasts a prime location just opposite the Guggenheim museum, it doesn't have much to offer tourists searching for a taste of the 'old Bilbao'. Couples wanting a relaxing city break would appreciate the large bath tub with views of the museum and the hills surrounding the city, as well as the Michelin star restaurant on the top floor, but families are likely to feel out of place here. The establishment occasionally receives celebrities during the summer months for large events such as the BBK festival, which has previously featured the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Rammstein and Fatboy Slim.

This gorgeous boutique hotel is ideally situated just a five minute walk from the Guggenheim. A feeling of warmth and luxury (without being pretentious) sweeps over guests as they walk into the hotel - which is originally and tastefully decorated with mannequins in the window, potted plants at reception, and bright and colourful walls. The hotel is ideal for couples wanting a unique and romantic experience due to the beautiful design and the spa and wellness therapy on the lower ground floors. Families are equally welcome but children may not necessarily appreciate the subtle touches that make this hotel special, such as vintage style brown leather chairs in the bar and a relaxing reading room on the first floor.

This grand hotel in the classic Basque style is all about service and luxury. Situated on Plaza Moyúa - right in the centre of town - the hotel's original façade stands tall and proud amongst other classical buildings such as the Palacio de Chavarri, which is now a governmental building. Elegant archways, sparkling chandeliers, and grand winding staircases characterise this hotel, which is often the top choice for politicians or celebrities when staying the Bilbao for events such as the BBK music festival. When this is not the case however, Carlton welcomes a whole range of guests, from tourists to couples on a romantic break, to families. In contrast to some of the more recent 'design' hotels on the riverside, Hotel Carlton can offer guests a real taste of 'old Bilbao', with certain original features dating back to 1926 when the hotel was first opened.

This little three star hotel right in the centre of Bilbao's old town is characterised by a distinctly Spanish décor theme, with patterned woodwork in the bedrooms, green marble tiling in the lobby, warm terracotta wallpaper, and peach and cream tiling in the bathrooms. Although not the best in the region for mod cons and design, Tryp has very friendly service and is one of the only hotels to be situated right in the old town (all the rest are pensions). As such, it mainly attracts guests simply wanting a prime location rather than top quality facilities. There is a nice atmosphere for families and groups of travellers here, whilst couples are equally welcome but they may miss those luxury touches that often make for a romantic getaway.

This hostel-style two star hotel ideally located right in the old town is a real find for young travellers wanting to be in the midst of the action. One of only a handful of hotels (the rest are Pensions) in the old town, Bilbao Jardines is a great option for anyone wanting 'no fuss' accommodation with great access to all of Bilbao's best bars and restaurants. The décor has been kept simple, with turquoise walls, light wooden furniture and grey stone flooring throughout, whilst the same is true of the guest rooms - which are basic but clean.

This modern hotel with its original facade (the building used to be a theatre) and completely renovated interior nicely strikes the balance between old and new Bilbao. Attracting mainly a family clientele, the hotel - whist remaining elegant and sophisticated - is still very child friendly. The contemporary rooms could also suit couples searching for a functional room for their stay in Bilbao, although the hotel lacks that special character which often transforms your stay from city break to romantic getaway. The deep and calming colours of red, grey and mahogany characterise the hotel - which has 97 rooms and unusually starts on level two of the building (the first two levels being a casino).
