Walking into Ercilla hotel, the heady black and red décor in the reception and lobby area creates a warm and cosy atmosphere, yet this is not reflected in the service, as we found out when no one was manning the reception desk at the time of our arrival. The black and red colour scheme is continued throughout the hotel with black flooring in the restaurant, white and black sofas in the lobby and a black marble effect in certain bathrooms. The hotel's main clientele is businessmen looking for a base for a short stay in Bilbao. Families and couples would be equally welcome but the rooms lack any real sense of romance and there is little to keep the kids entertained in the form of play areas or colouring books.

    Location 7.19 /10

Ercilla is located on one of Bilbao's main roads (appropriately named Ercilla), and is a five minute walk from the Plaza Moyua - the centre of 'new' Bilbao. The old town - where you will find all the bars and restaurants - is accessible either on foot (around 25 minutes) or by bus. Equally, the main museums including the Guggenheim and the Fine Arts Museum are a 15 minute walk away. Bilbao Airport is eight miles from the hotel and can be reached by taxi or bus.

    Accommodation 7.95 /10

All of Ercilla's 325 rooms follow roughly the same colour patterns. A dark cream and black carpet runs throughout, with white sheets, cream walls, wooden furniture and the occasional splash of colour - normally in the form of a red armchair or curtains. As stated above, certain items and furnishings are in need of refurbishment or replacement. This is unfortunate as the hotel has the potential to be a really great establishment if only a little money were spent on renovations and perhaps a few additional members of staff for a more attentive service. Bathrooms can be chosen either with a simple shower or with a shower and bath combination and a range of own brand hospitality products are provided. Deluxe rooms have the added bonuses of bathrobes and slippers, Keisi products and two sinks rather than one. Ercilla also has three suites to choose from - two of which have large balconies holding sunbeds and a selection of potted plants. As would be expected, the suite will buy guests extra space and a more luxurious bathroom thanks to the little details such as the hydrotherapy jets in the shower.

    Overview 8.20 /10

Ercilla is definitely a hotel with two faces. Walking in via reception, the bar and the lobby, the hotel gives off a warm, luxury vibe - especially in the lounge bar where the walls are adorned with local artists work and the soft red lighting casts a tinted glow over the large leather sofas. A trip in the elevator up to the rooms soon reveals however, that certain areas of the hotel are in need of renovations. Many door frames had chips in the paint or the woodwork itself and the carpet in several rooms was either fraying or dirty in places (this is always more noticeable on light coloured carpets). The gym on the last floor of the hotel is well equipped with around 15 machines including treadmills, cycling and rowing machines, as well as weights and exercise mats. The views from the gym are superb, especially in summer when the hotel places deckchairs on the adjoining terrace.

    Food and drink 6.20 /10

Unfortunately, the Restaurant Bermeo is closed during low season (December - February) as it simply does not receive enough customers. However, the Bistro Bermeo is open all year round and serves a selection of pinxtos, light snacks and drinks and has a set menu priced at €19.75 for both lunchtime and evening services. The Lobby bar is open until midnight and is a nice place to enjoy a cocktail thanks to the warm and cosy atmosphere mentioned above. Breakfast is served in the cafeteria on the first floor, which has plenty of space, meaning guests will never be left waiting for a table. Breakfast is served in a typically continental style, with all the usual dishes on offer.

    To know

With 325 rooms and a total capacity of 650 people, Ercilla is a very large hotel with few personal touches and no room for personalised service. There is a cafeteria, a restaurant and a breakfast room, along with a gym and small steam room on the last floor. The gym area has patio doors leading onto a large open air terrace with great views of hotel, which is often used for sunbathing in summer.

One of the Silken chain's many hotels in the Basque Country, Indautxu caters primarily for business clients, as is clear from the 11 meeting rooms situated around the hotel. Nevertheless, Indautxu is equally welcoming to families and couples simply in Bilbao for a holiday or short break. Simple, clean, crisp and contemporary décor characterises the hotel, with beautiful polished cream flooring and spot lighting in the lobby, reception and bar.

This grand hotel in the classic Basque style is all about service and luxury. Situated on Plaza Moyúa - right in the centre of town - the hotel's original façade stands tall and proud amongst other classical buildings such as the Palacio de Chavarri, which is now a governmental building. Elegant archways, sparkling chandeliers, and grand winding staircases characterise this hotel, which is often the top choice for politicians or celebrities when staying the Bilbao for events such as the BBK music festival. When this is not the case however, Carlton welcomes a whole range of guests, from tourists to couples on a romantic break, to families. In contrast to some of the more recent 'design' hotels on the riverside, Hotel Carlton can offer guests a real taste of 'old Bilbao', with certain original features dating back to 1926 when the hotel was first opened.

This modern hotel with its original facade (the building used to be a theatre) and completely renovated interior nicely strikes the balance between old and new Bilbao. Attracting mainly a family clientele, the hotel - whist remaining elegant and sophisticated - is still very child friendly. The contemporary rooms could also suit couples searching for a functional room for their stay in Bilbao, although the hotel lacks that special character which often transforms your stay from city break to romantic getaway. The deep and calming colours of red, grey and mahogany characterise the hotel - which has 97 rooms and unusually starts on level two of the building (the first two levels being a casino).

This small hostel-style hotel is located a little outside of the main tourist area of Bilbao, but still within the city itself. The hotel calls itself a 'photography boutique hotel', and whilst guests shouldn't expect luxury facilities or particularly beautiful rooms, this small hotel is good value for money for young travellers booking a short stay in Bilbao. The service is friendly and efficient and the reception staff speaks fluent English.

This recently renovated, immaculate hotel is so clean and sparkling that we thought it was brand new. Actually open since 1965, Villa de Bilbao underwent a complete renovation in 2013, and as such it now has fresh, contemporary décor throughout, complete with shiny marble flooring in the lobby, brand new springy mattresses in every room and effective, soundproofed walls to ensure guest's tranquility. The hotel attracts a whole range of clients, offering meeting rooms for businessmen, extra beds in double rooms for families, and stylish and elegant facilities for couples treating themselves to a weekend away.

This gorgeous boutique hotel is ideally situated just a five minute walk from the Guggenheim. A feeling of warmth and luxury (without being pretentious) sweeps over guests as they walk into the hotel - which is originally and tastefully decorated with mannequins in the window, potted plants at reception, and bright and colourful walls. The hotel is ideal for couples wanting a unique and romantic experience due to the beautiful design and the spa and wellness therapy on the lower ground floors. Families are equally welcome but children may not necessarily appreciate the subtle touches that make this hotel special, such as vintage style brown leather chairs in the bar and a relaxing reading room on the first floor.

This five star hotel in one of Bilbao's calm business and residential districts has a luxurious, almost gaudy design which attracts mainly couples on a city break and the occasional business traveller. The design, when considered at any one point in the hotel, seems tasteful and unique. However, when considering the hotel as a whole, the many different styles of design seem to give off more of a feeling of 'bazaar' than luxury hotel. Nevertheless, the establishment certainly provides a unique experience and some guests may even like the hotel more for the fact that it seems to have no consistent theme.

The Gran Hotel Domine seems to be trying to capitalise on Bilbao's relatively recent reputation as a hub of art and design, with its mix of gigantic sculptures, furniture resembling biting lips and original works by Javier Mariscal - a Spanish artist whose film 'Chico and Rita' was nominated for an Oscar in 2010. However, this hotel will not be welcoming budding artists on a student or backpackers' budget anytime soon. Rather, 70 percent of its clients are travelling on business. Whilst the hotel boasts a prime location just opposite the Guggenheim museum, it doesn't have much to offer tourists searching for a taste of the 'old Bilbao'. Couples wanting a relaxing city break would appreciate the large bath tub with views of the museum and the hills surrounding the city, as well as the Michelin star restaurant on the top floor, but families are likely to feel out of place here. The establishment occasionally receives celebrities during the summer months for large events such as the BBK festival, which has previously featured the likes of The Cure, Radiohead, Rammstein and Fatboy Slim.

Whilst Carlton attracts a wide range of guests, Abando caters more to business clients. A large marble entranceway greets guests upon arrival, with staff on hand ready to take your luggage to your room.
